Overall we had a good week thanks to the weather, the beach and the water. The hotel is dated and in need of repair in most areas including the rooms which are hit and miss. Public area washrooms often out of order in lobby, pool area and buffet (only opened 2 out of 7 days that we were there). Also when they are open only running water, no soap and not clean. Saw a cleaner one time the whole week.
Nightly entertainment is okay. The buffet is repetitive with poor selection. [Details]

The strong points
Beach was incredible, lots of chairs, free catamaran trip along the beach is a great option and for $20 you can snorkel. Pool was nice, other than the washroom .
The weak points
Most staff seemed tired and not overly friendly . Food was very repetitive and not much selection, even considering shortages it seemed others at different resorts didn't experience this the same time we were there.
Sanitary measures
Overall fairly clean, but washrooms were always closed or in repair with hit and miss options available like soap and paper towel.

Le pire hôtel du groupe Meliá.

, Montréal, QC
2023-12-18
[Details]

Worst experience ever in an all inclusive

, Terrebonne, QC
2023-11-07
Don't believe the paid-off positive reviews as they are fake. Check out TripAdvisor and all the negative reviews as they are spot on!!

This was the worst experience in an all inclusive that I've ever had in my life. Yes, I've been to Cuba before and this was by far the worst experience ever!! Please trust me and go somewhere else or you'll regret it too…

Bedrooms:
- Very old but we expected that to be the case.
- Mattress springs will poke you all night long.
- Towels smell of rotten cheese.
- Sink was clogged. We complained and they came and “fixed” it quickly but then water was leaking from under the counter. We complained again and it was finally properly fixed.
- Lizards in the bedroom which we had to take out daily by using one of the drinking cups. I guess that's somewhat to be expected (or so we were told).

Resort:
- The lagoon was DISGUSTING and the smell would be carried by the wind. We had to constantly move around depending where the wind was blowing to avoid the stank.

Food!!
- The worst on earth and I'm not exaggerating. Even for Cuba standards this was horrible.
- We were served raw chicken.
- I found a piece of glass in my rice (after I crunched down on it…)
- Same horrible food at the buffet every day with no variety.
- No condiments!! Dry burger patty between two pieces of bread. No ketchup no Mayo no nothing.
- Never any fries! Not once did we see fries, hotdogs or any type of fast food other than the dry burgers.
- If you can get a fork through a piece of corn on the cob, it'd be a miracle! Impossible to chew but ready to make popcorn with it…
- No attention to allergies. Food with nuts isn't indicated. For instance the chocolate ice cream had nuts in it but you wouldn't be able to tell unless you put it in your mouth.
- No fresh fruit nor veggies! Mango & watermelon were white!
- No mojitos! It's the National drink of Cuba but we kept being told they had no mint nor lime…
- They stop serving beer at 3 PM with no explanation other than “management decision”.
- À la carte restaurants serve the same food as the buffet… in a nicer presentation with the same horrible taste.
- Forget wine… or bring your own bottles.

Management:
- The staff was very friendly! We tipped generously, daily, everywhere we went.
- There were barely any activities and the shows weren't worth going to.
- We complained about the food (raw chicken and glass and some of the other stuff above) and we were offered the chance to checkout at 4PM instead of noon (as an apology) provided that we sign a waiver… [Details]

Clean rooms and decent food

I was a bit reticent booking a Cuba vacation as my last experience was not very good.
I have to say I was pleasantly surprised! The food was good. There was a variety at the buffet every day and the a la carte restaurants that we tried were good. It is an older resort (24 yrs old according to the workers), but our room was very clean and the resort in general was clean. Our AC worked perfect and there was no smell in our room, but one of the couples we were with had trouble with AC. It seemed to be an issue for that specific building. The beach was beautiful! Overall it is a good resort, I would recommend. [Details]

Relaxing, laid-back resort

, Ottawa, ON
2023-04-18
I was a return guest, as are many--and that, in itself, is a good recommendation. Everything in my room worked properly, and both the room and resort were very well kept. The meals at the a la carte restaurants were wonderful: a good amount of choice, very tasty and the plating was world-class. Also the service. The entertainment at this resort is also a cut above: both the shows at the main stage and the performances at the lobby bar. The a la carte restaurants also had talented musicians, as did the cocktail party for Canadian guests. I upgraded to an ocean-view room, and the concierge lounge services came with. Both Naidelys and Greter were very knowledgeable and helpful. The continental breakfast and snacks were also convenient, and the super-duper coffee machine had wonderful cappucino. [Details]

Relaxing Week

, Truro, NS
2023-03-19
We just had a wonderful week at Melia Las Antillas. We usually spend most of out time at the beach and it and the pool were all we could ask for. They were clean and there was never a shortage of chairs or service at either location.

Service in general at this location, housekeeping, food and bartending, were all very good. The beach bar staff, Colon, Raul and Jorge made us smile everyday. We were also especially pleased with Greter, Ibeisi and Naidelys in Fifth Floor Concierge who went out of their way to make us comfortable. Naidelys was especially helpful on one occasion when my husband, who is a type one diabetic, found himself with a low blood sugar early in the morning. We always travel with the required candy etc. but weren't sure we would have enough to get us to breakfast and she delivered juice and sweets to our room.

Our room was very comfortable and kept very clean by housekeeping. The bed was the most comfortable we've had in all of our visits to Cuba and for the first time ever, I didn't use the extra pillowcases I brought from home as the pillows smelled fresh and clean as opposed to musty and damp.

As is the case at most resorts in Cuba right now, there were some inconsistencies with what was available for food and drinks. On one night no white wine in the buffet, another no pina colada at the pool or gin in the lobby. These situations were usually temporary and we were always able to find something else to our liking to eat and drink.

We are both 50 years old and found this resort to have the perfect mix of entertainment/activities and quiet. We were especially impressed with the Cuban Day entertainment and food and the evening cocktail party for Canadians. They both felt like nice little extras and were well done. We recommend this resort and will definitely hope to be lucky enough to return. [Details]

I stayed 6 nights in this hotel and I don't regret it at all, I was able to rest and party. I tried the delicacies of the Cuban day which is not usually the most sophisticated cuisine but it is very tasty. The staff is a dream, they are all smiling and friendly at all times. I recommend paying for a room on the 4th or 5th floor and concierge service because it is a plus that really enhances your stay at this hotel. I loved it all. [Details]

LOVED my first trip to Cuba

, Woodstock, ON
2023-01-29
I stayed for my first time in Cuba and had absolutely no idea what to believe about many of the reviews and warnings I'd read going in. Although it is certainly a change from what I'm used to in Canada this resort was absolutely amazing considering. It was very clean and the food was plentiful. It was at times a bit repetitive with some foods but there was so much to choose from and many different places within the resort to get something different. The people working there are SO amazingly kind and friendly and appreciative of us being there. I really did not expect that. The beach and pool were amazing and drinks were abundant! I would definitely recommend going here to Melia Antillas. [Details]

The strong points
It is very beautiful and clean with wonderful staff, good plentiful food in different locations. Lots of fantastic entertainment and a great location not far from Veradero and only about a half hour from the airport. The grounds are also very beautiful.
The weak points
The hotel looks like it needs work done such as painting and just needs some revitalization but all in all that has nothing to do with the function of the hotel or your comfort and I really didn't notice it as much after the first day.
Sanitary measures
There is plenty of hand sanitizer to be found in the resort. It is very clean there. But it is a public hotel on an island where all go from around the world so..... you take your chances anywhere.

Our 10 days at Melia Las Antillas

, Grenville Sur La Rouge, QC
2023-01-15
We gathered with family from 3 separate provinces in Canada, Quebec, Alberta and Manitoba. We had great expectations as all the reviews were very positive. I will not be as positive.
Rooms: Our room was very musty smelling and I know why, no ventilation of any kind in the bathroom area. Not because they weren't working, there was no evidence of a fan ever being there!
The mosquitos were brutal and I had visions of breaking my mirror at the sink because that's the only way I could kill them.
The Food:
I know Cuba is not known for their tasty food but we had a real problem getting the basics. Butter was only available in the am and sometimes not even then. No bananas or orange juice ever!!! Bacon was rare and so were fruits in general. No fries ever, only rice and spaghetti. They ran out of white wine on our third day, never to see it again! The Pina Colada and Mohitos were making very rare appearances. When they did have vodka, there no mix to make anything. They had rum and mixed it with sickly sweet punch or lemonade. No coke, 7up or the likes and certainly, no gingerale. Another problem was the glasses. They were serving beer in champagne flutes in the evening which embarrassed the staff considerably. I really felt sorry for them having to tell the guests they couldn't make a pina colada because they didn't have the ingredients or having to serve a grouchy guest a beer in a champagne flute!
The chicken I relied on the last time I went to Cuba was scarce as well.
The Snack Bar had not much to offer either.
I had omelet every day and that was my main meal of the day. I believe his hotel is rated a 4 1/2 star but there was no indication of this that 1 saw anywhere at the resort. I booked because it was a 4 1/2 star.
I do not remotely think it was a 4 1/2 star.
The Grounds:
The river on the grounds was very smelly. They had daily issues with the pumps which created loads of moss they had to rake to the sides.
I loved all the palm trees they had on the resort and I know this hotel must have been grand in earlier days but it is evident that the good times are behind this little gem. The rain troughs on the roof of the buildings are no longer there and the once beautiful are resort is becoming run down. [Details]

Melia Las Antillas resort was great for the price we paid. Rooms and all surrounding areas were kept clean. Needs some TLC and attention to detail such as paint on the outside walls and corridors and broken hand rails. The staff was fantastic and the location to the beach wonderful. Entertainment was good for the first few days then it became repetitious. The menus in the specialty restaurants did not change for the 2 weeks we were there but that's Cuba for you. Wonderful stay, returning in October

, Calgary, AB
2022-09-29
Buffet and food were wonderful. Service at the bar was a bit slow, but not because of employees being slow. Miguel always saw me coming and had a drink waiting for me. Danita was also so helpful. I found the food to be quite good. I am a fussy eater, yet there was always yummy food - especially the pork stew - so flavorful! I have been to 4 other resorts in Varadero, and this food was so much better.

Sprained my ankle early in the trip, so I wasn't able to enjoy much of the vacation. The shows seemed good compared to other places in Varadero that I have been to. I did not go to any of the a la cartes, but will this trip. I had bedbugs, but by the time that I realized, it was the second to last day - I thought that the bites were ants or sand bugs. I am taking this trip to the same resort as I missed out on a lot of things because of my ankle. I am very excited to participate in the special nights, especially Cuba night (I couldn't hobble to the beach).

I am also so impressed with the lagoon, who cares about the smell, which really wasn't too bad at all. It is a natural environment that is very lacking in the world. From what I have seen, Cuba is very involved in wildlife conservation, so if there is a bit of a smell to live with in supporting local wildlife, no person should complain about it. The facilities are not as run down as other reviews would make you think. the bathroom was clean, as well as the room (other than the bedbugs!). I don't go for a Caribbean holiday for a fancy room. My room was very quiet, even being close to the pool.

If you want top of the line, fancy places, I suggest that you pay the price for them. There are at least 4 others that have upper class snobby service for the elite few; the people that I am quite happy to avoid.

I would certainly give this resort 4 stars. So looking forward to seeing Miguel again! [Details]

I wanted to take the time to express our extreme satisfaction with this hotel! This was our third visit and we went knowing that things could be scarce! The hotel was extremely clean and the staff amazing! The ocean was beautiful. We had good food and lots of choices. The food and beverages manager Miguel Lopez was on top of everything. Guest Services were always checking in, Thank You so much! Entertainment was top notch! Only thing to improve would be the mosquitoes. However we were lucky and kept away from them. Staying inside early mornings and no nighttime beach. Thank you all for making this an amazing stay! [Details]

We might stretch it to a 3 1/2.

The strong points
The staff were wonderful , very positive and happy after being closed for 22 months, Service was great from them. The pool area was the best, then beach. Bottled water used everywhere. Rooms spotless clean, but plain.
The weak points
Food and restaurants, the food was the same every day, not enough variety, no beef or pork. Not enough fish. NO white wine available, but could be bought in shop. The restaurants could use sound proofing. music was very repetitive at pool.
Sanitary measures
Very good. Masks were required to be worn by guests throughout the hotel . Sanitizing at all areas. All staff wore masks at all times, even when the temperature was over 35 degrees. Very impressive.

The hotel and grounds were very nice. I had to move rooms partway through the week as there was a strong mould smell in the first room but that was due to the room being closed up for 2 years.
The staff were great. They made me feel welcome and went above and beyond. The food was not good at all. Very limited choices and not well prepared. [Details]

My experience at this resort was excellent. The hotel was clean and staff were very friendly. My room was cleaned daily. I really appreciated the service at every meal including an extensive healthy buffet at breakfast, lunch and supper. There was a variety of meats, vegetables, fresh fruits, desserts and beverages at every meal. Staff were attentive and accommodating. I was not expecting such a large resort and having easy access to the beach. Bonus! [Details]

The strong points
Facility, staff, meals and location.
The weak points
WIFI, every time you used their wifi, you had to keep putting in the assigned username and password. Very annoying. The wifi shuts off after each use. The beach had a red flag most days so we could not swim.
Sanitary measures
Strict guidelines were in place which I appreciated.

Pictures definitely better than current state

This was my first time to Cuba so not sure what to expect. Was honestly the worst resort I have ever been too. I know Covid has hit Cuba so hard, so I was happy to be there and to tip more than normal. It was so much more run down than I expected, the pictures must be old on their website. They kept running out of wine and vodka, the servers, some were quite friendly, others, not so much. Their english was not great so hard to communicate. The entertainment wasn't what I normally see at other resorts either. The water around the pool had lots of algae and smelt so bad. The grass wasn't mowed, the basketball and tennis courts should be torn down, no nets even to play if you wanted too. Gym smelled so bad, wires hanging out of the ceilings. I could go on and on.
The food wasn't good, but I guess that is normal for Cuba. The pool area is nice, the beach and water were great, definitely the highlight.
I hate to leave negative reviews and comments but felt other guests should know what to expect before booking, I wish I had done more research. [Details]

We really enjoyed our stay at Melia Las Antilles. The food was okay. The ala cartes were really good. The beach is beautiful except needs some cleaning. There are cigarette butts everywhere in the sand. The rooms need updating, especially the bathrooms. We had an ant problem in our room. But everything is open to air so bugs would be hard to control. The grounds are beautiful. [Details]

Beautiful beach and grounds. Staff is very helpful if you have questions and very friendly even if you don't. Staff at the buffet and a la cartes are awesome and deserve much of the credit for the atmosphere of this resort. Always happy and humming and smiling. The beach is amazing and a perfect way to spend the day. The entertainers do a different routine every night and do it professionally and with a ton of talent. The routines are flawless and done with a smile. [Details]

Mother daughter trip to Cuba

, Ottawa, ON

All in all our stay was amazing as the staff was very nice. If you are going to Cuba for the food then you will be disappointed because your expectations will be to high. The food is bland but they do have a variety of it and there will always be something you will enjoy (try not to be to picky). Our room was big and clean (not new) and had no drawers to put your cloths in. The shows were very nice since you could just sit have a drink and listen to the singers every night. The access to go to Varadero was very easy and safe. The facilities at the gym are poor but you can manage to get a workout anyways. One thing I would recommend while going in Nov. would be to take mosquito repellent since at night in the lobby there were lots of mosquitos (not sure if time of year since was at another resort in June and did not have that problem). Would I go again? Yes I would. Loved it. [Details]

The strong points
The best part of a resort for me is the beach and the water was warm, clear and amazing. All staff were caring and welcoming. Room was clean, plenty of hot water in the shower. Easy to access bus to Varadero. Very safe place to go.
The weak points
No drawers in room to put your cloth in (just closet). Food lacks a bit of taste. Not impressed with excursion to Havana as the guide was not that good, food at the restaurant was not enough for 8 people, lots of time spent on bus.
