An aging aunt in a young family
Along the Mayan Rivera, there are many options at the 5-star level. The online reviews guide us, but unfortunately, reality often give us a different perspective than what we hoped for.
Sandos Cancun is a prime example. It has a very high rating online, but reality is much less…
We expected more than we got. It certainly is not worthy of anything more than a grudgingly given 3 stars.
Sandos Cancun is like an aging grand dame trying to hold on to beauty that faded a generation or two ago.
The façade is crumbling in places. It appears that rather than repair, the solution is to slop paint over defects in the hope no one notices. Looking out our window downwards, we could see every balcony crumbling. The room had been lavishly painted. So much so, there were paint splatters everywhere, including on the mattrass, walls, floors, etc. The toilet had a huge crack in it, thankfully not enough to leak. The paint and patch concept was seen all over the establishment. I realise that it costs money to close a restaurant, but jeez, take one day and fix properly, not a quick overnight slap job.
It was supposed to be an all-inclusive, but we were hit with am “Eco-tax” on check-in. Felt like we were being scammed.
The restaurants other than the buffet suffered from slow, indifferent service. Everything looked old and on its last legs. No dress codes were enforced. Hard to enjoy a potentially romantic evening out when the next table had people wearing beach clothes in a supposed upscale eatery.
The buffer restaurant had mismatched, rickety furniture. If a server felt undertipped at a previous visit, they ignored us for the rest of our stay, even though we tipped at least twice or more than what others did. Apparently, the equivalent of 10$ (US) in pesos was more insulting to them than a 2$ US$ tip. The buffet menu could have benefitted from more locally derived cuisine. We went to Mexico to eat Mexican food. For the most part, we could have been anywhere in US or Canada. The fish served on the buffet was tasteless. The steam tables could use more steam as the food was mostly room temperature.
The “nightclub” was an event/board room spruced up with wall covering and a few lights, with overpoweringly loud, annoying techo/club music. Not an enjoyable environment if one wanted to enjoy a night of dancing without risking permanent hearing loss.
The weather was ok; the beach was cleaned each morning.
We could have chosen anywhere else it probably would have been much better than our stay at Sandos Cancun.
