Check in rapide. NOT a 5 Star Resort
Emily D, Saskatoon, SK
2023-03-08
In my opinion this is NOT a 5 star resort, and definitely not worth what we paid for it. I had always heard great things about RIU hotels but I was very disappointed with our experience. Pros: the pools are nice and the drinks are good, lots of options and fast drink service. However, it can be very hard to get a chair at the pool unless you are up before 7am. Cons: FOOD - room service was advertised but is not available. The after-hours food option is a fridge in the sports bar with sandwiches and burgers that you can microwave, and they are NOT good. The one time my husband went to get something the fridge was empty and he had to pay the bar staff to refill the fridge, and what he got he couldn't even eat. There are really only 2 a la cartes which are supposed to be open from 6-10:30pm. Both times we tried to go to these a la cartes we were told at 7pm that they weren't taking anyone else. There is one themed buffet, one main buffet and one buffet/a al carte combo. The food is ok, definitely not 5 star though. Almost no seafood, and a lot of fried stuff. The hotel itself is quite modern. The rooms have a frosted glass panel between the shower and the bedroom which is a pain. When someone gets up to use the bathroom during the night and turns on the light, the whole room is lit up. They are clean though and the cleaning staff is lovely. Another thing that we weren't prepared for is that the hotel is a $100 cab ride to Cancun, and there is not a lot to do at the resort. Other resorts I've been to had a vendor market one evening, tequila tasting events etc. This resort didn't have a lot of activities like that. Overall I would say this resort is more like a 3.5 star. Just be aware if you are expecting a 5 star experience you will be disappointed. [Details]

Amazing all around
Chace Barnett, Abbotsford, BC

We traveled with a group of 12. 6 adults and a 13,9,7,2,2,2 year olds. They got our rooms together and high quality play pens in the room. Resort was VERY clean. Someone was cleaning at all times. Food was alright , definitely above average but not amazing. The restaurants were the same. Note: the food is not 24hrs , the food that is available after 10 pm is in the sports bar and is gross. There is also no room service but that didn't bother us. The resort is definitely geared towards families. Water slides are fun for adults too tho. The kids club is better for 4-5 year olds , my older kids found it very boring. The party pool always had something going on and there was always a drink cart! One negative : the kiddy pool doesn't allow drinks and has no servers. (Us parents of young kids need drinks!) it's also closed on Mondays which I found odd.
The white party was impressive and the silent disco party was surprisingly super fun ! Both are family orientated and was great for everyone.
- family orientated
- VERY clean
- drinks everywhere
- beach beautiful (also has servers)
The weak points
- no drinks in kiddy pool
- food was alright (the food is NOT 24 hrs, the sports bar food is not edible.)

We stayed at the Riu Dunamar in July of 2022 . This hotel was the most disappointing one in my 6 stays in Mexico and 5th time in a Riu.
Pros: Staff in buffet were one of the best weve ever had in an all inclusive, the beach was absolutely gorgeous, one of the best beaches we've seen in Mexico.
Now for the cons: To start with, the check in was quick, but done in a very indifferent manner, nothing special, staff were treating visitors like numbers and there were no welcome drinks whatsoever or anything special to make you feel welcomed. We are a family of four, with two kids, and we were given a room above the NightClub Pacha. We were unable to sleep for the first night, so the next day we went to the front desk and asked for a room change, and it wasn't that simple. No one apologized for the discomfort and on top of that they asked us to pay a fee for the new room, which was apparently partially ocean view (explaining the extra cost). The overral esthetic of this hotel was very generic, done on a tight budget. You want be wowed by anything in this hotel. The furniture in the rooms were already damaged after 5 years of existence and there beds are small and uncomfortable.
As goes for the food, the buffet was the worst experience I had in an all inclusive in Mexico. Again everything is chosen on a budget, no variety whatsoever. If you are a foodie person this is not the hotel for you. We did not go to any restaurants because we had heard the food is even worst. The meal's aren't horrible, it's just not tasty.
Entertainment was nothing special.
Cleanliness: was okay.
Noise: this hotel is marketed as a family friendly resort, however, this hotel reminds me more of a spring break hotel: people partying, a lot of noise after the nightclub has closed, no matter where your room is.
Overral this hotel is a big no no, especially at the price we paid. Because of this experience we will not be back in another Riu hotel. This is not a 5 star hotel. Be careful how much you pay. [Details]

We stayed at Riu Dunamar for 9 days. The location is just perfect. A long beach cost very spacious and clean. The beach was clean almost every day. You don't need to worry about the place under the palms, as it very specious! The staff is very friendly, hardworking and very respectful! The food is average for the 5-star hotel( just comparing with the others hotel that we have visited before). Very uncomfortable time for the lunch from 13 to 15 p.m, and be aware that inside buffet the dining place closes at 14.15 p.m and unfortunately some day it was a lack of food at the late time around 14.30 p.m.The rooms are good and were cleaned every day. Entertainment is ok. I would like to express my good words towards receptionist employee ALDO-professional and very helpful.Hardly 4 star for this hotel.Yes i would recomend it for my friends [Details]

We travelled as a group of 5 (moms and daughters trip) and had the BEST week. The resort itself is beautiful, clean, and the grounds are well maintained. They have 5 different pools each with their own vibe. Our favourite was the main pool where all the games are held. Our 3 teenage girls loved participating in all the activities and met lots of new friends from around the world.
The entertainment staff are very welcoming and talked to us each by name inviting us to all the various games and challenges they set up for the day. Pool tug of war was the best!
The bar tenders were super friendly and there is a cart that comes around the pool regularly so you don't even need to leave the longer or pool.
The Buffett was the best part of the hotel. Fabulous food and they mixed up the meat and taco stations each day so there was plenty of variety. (I ate tacos at pretty much every meal because they were the absolute best) The chinese Bamboo a la carte restaurant was also really good. We went there twice for dinner.
The beach at this resort is amazing. Soft sand, blue waters, lots of chairs and palm trees and only a little bit of seaweed but that unavoidable at most beaches)
The entertainment was decent. As you'd expect, we participated in the karaoke night and that was fun. Really do think they should screen singers though as some were really bad and painful to listen to. Kahoot challenges were fun for the teens each night and they gave out prizes for top scores.
Room was good. Beds could be better if they had a pillow top but we had everything we needed and had lots of space. Hallways are extremely echoey. Woke up a few times at night from loud people passing by our door. If your a light sleeper bring earplugs or noise machine. Wifi was also excellent at this resort only place it didn't reach was the beach.
All in all a great resort for the price point and we would definitely return. [Details]

I don't know where to start.no one really knows how to speak English, everything is slow & line up. There is real kinky one restaurant for everyone to eat daily and most of the time to space available to sit & it's buffet style. The food is the same every day & always you have to wait for food as majority of their selection is empty & it is a battle to get food. Our Christmas vacation really got ruined with all the hassles from Covid to get there. I have been to many resorts in Mexico but this one is quite something, there is not enough food & selection/choices.staff treat you rude when you ask for food, most of the time we are hungry & I have to by snack from there shop which they charge $12 us for a bag of chips. When you book their low quality restaurant it's another battle to get it & they are extremely slow & by the time food arrives it's cold!!!! My son & nephews got sick for two days from quality of foods. We have 3 rooms & all of us can't wait to get back home, most likely we need another vacation from this! Please consider when you are booking this hotel. [Details]

We had a wonderful trip! First off, Mexico and specifically the Cancun/Mayan Riviera have been off our radar for the past 5-6 years as we have preferred the southern Caribbean (Antigua, St Lucia, etc), but this trip and specifically this resort will bring us back. The entire experience was excellent from start to finish. The staff are extremely helpful and provide attentive service with a smile. The resort is very modern, extremely clean and the staff are continuously cleaning and maintaining the property - in every aspect. We have traveled extensively and I have never seen a resort power washing and scrubbing the pool/ lounge chairs. We will be going back FOR SURE and have been telling all of our friends and family to consider this resort when looking for a great vacation spot. [Details]

Ensuite, on a fait notre check-in.
[Details]

We had a wonderful family holiday at the Riu Dunamar. We love the Caribbean side of Mexico, the beach was excellent with plenty of lounges for travellers to enjoy a day at the beach. There were 4 pools, two large, two medium sized with swim-up bars. The two large pools were perfect for families. The location of the pools were beautiful. We were so impressed with the main buffet, in fact after going to one of the restaurants, the remainder of our holiday we ate at the buffet - lots of selection of fresh food, great variety day to day and always a carving station in the evenings. We loved everything about our holiday. We would definitely stay at the Riu Dunamar again on a Cancun holiday. [Details]

I've been to two other Riu resorts. This one is as good or better. Nice and new and modern. Food very good. Some staff stand out - J Manuel in the dinner buffet is one. Entertainment was very good. My son and I enjoyed the Legends of Rock show the most. My two complaints are: 1. At the breakfast and lunch buffet it was too hard to get a wait staff to get coffee etc. It was so bad one day I had to go ask a staff member to please serve us. Add a couple more staff and it would make a huge difference. 2. It took 4 phone calls over 2 days to have our fridge stocked and the fridge working. Fridge was never stocked from last people as we had half empty bottles still in the fridge. But overall it is a great resort. [Details]

If you're looking to get away from the hustle and bustle of Cancun, then this is your resort. But beware, there is nothing out here except the 2 RIU resorts. No shopping centers or little town to visit. We booked into the cheapest room, but still had a partial ocean view. The room was big & clean, with a small sitting area and the bathroom was a great size. We loved the large shower. It always had hot water, unlike some Mexican resorts we've stayed at. The grounds were well maintained and the 5 pools were great. If you have kids they will love the water park. The thing I liked about their swim up bars (they have 2) is that they also have little tables and chairs within the pool you can also stand or sit at. There is a great beach and both the pools and the beach have more than enough loungers. They have lots of things to do during the day, fitness classes, dance classes, aqua fit, etc. The night time entertainment was good. They had a great band playing a couple of nights & their Las Vegas revue show was fun. The food - we enjoyed the buffet food. Always something different for those who wanted it. Unfortunately we did not have great experiences with the specialty restaurants. My husband is gluten free and there was not much he could eat at the Chinese one (too much batter on everything) or the Italian (all regular pasta). The steak house was a laugh. Steaks were paper thin, so could not be cooked properly. We went to Isla Mujeres for one day, but it poured rain the whole time, so did not get to experience the whole vibe of the island. Overall we enjoyed our stay, but would probably stay somewhere with a little more to do outside the resort. There are quite a few new resorts opening within the next few years and supposedly a shopping mall, so give the area a couple of years and it will be thriving. [Details]

Le Check-out a pris environ 5 minutes. [Details]

For a 2 bedroom suite with 2 kids and 2 adults we paid $5960 without upgrades. Although we thought we were getting a deal, in the end we felt like we got what we paid for. There is a lack of organization when it comes to meal seating and entrance into the buffet area from the outside seating. The pools were nice and clean but there was not enough bathrooms for the amount of people. The water for the kids waterpark was not heated and super cold. There is currently construction on the south side that could be noisy if you had to stay on that side. Kids night entertainment was boring. Room was super clean and spacious. The bathroom drain did plug by the last day we were there. [Details]

My husband and I stayed at the Riu Dunamar from January 1st-8th. To keep it nice and simple I am going to break it up into Pros and Cons.
Lets start with the Pros: 1. Rooms are spacious, clean and relaxing 2. Pools- 4 to choose from(2 with swim up bars), plus the waterpark. 3. Beach is very nice, lots of chairs and no seaweed issues. 4. Best restaurant in our opinion was bamboo. Good selection of sushi, and other Asian dishes.
Cons: 1.Long wait times at restaurants-No reservations caused long long waits at the restaurants. At the kulinarium we were sat at 6:30 and weren't served our entrees until 8:00 my husbands steak was completely raw so we had to send it back and wait another 15 minutes for his food. Very slow!! Steakhouse-We waited an hour and 45 minutes to get into the steakhouse. We sat patiently outside at the chairs. We noticed people that came after us were being seated first because they were complaining to the hostess. It was very unorganized and cause a lot of frustration. When my food came it was RAW, we were missing things and our server was no were to be seen. This leads to my next point. 2. Severly understaffed. To be honest it's not the servers fault. I feel they did the best the could. There was two servers for an entire restaurant, a hostess and 1 runner. Basically all restaurants are very slow in service, except the buffet. 3. Food is average. Comparable to other Riu's. 4. Pool bartenders could be friendlier, they don't look like they enjoy their job. 5. I mentioned the nice pools however, they are in DESPERATE need for an adults only pool. There are kids jumping off the side of the pool into the swim up bar where there are marble tables and stools. Splashing into drinks and climbing onto the bar tables in the pool.
The entertainment to us was average, but drew a good crowd everynight. Since we booked before opening we paid a resonable price. This is not a 5 star resort. We travel to Mexico every year and I would compare this to a 4 star. It is also very secluded, so if you want to go shopping, you will want to pay a cab to go into Cancun or take the ferry to Isla Mujeures.
Would we return? No. The cons outweighed the pros for both of us. We are also a married couple without children so we find adult only resorts more appealing. [Details]

NOT a 5 Star Resort
Family
Amazing all around
Wifi is excellent - no issues at all
Overall we had an amazing trip ! [Details]
Not a 5 star hotel
Pros: Staff in buffet were one of the best weve ever had in an all inclusive, the beach was absolutely gorgeous, one of the best beaches we've seen in Mexico.
Now for the cons:
To start with, the check in was quick, but done in a very indifferent manner, nothing special, staff were treating visitors like numbers and there were no welcome drinks whatsoever or anything special to make you feel welcomed.
[Details]

Very nice gate away at RIU Dunamar on august 2022
It was okay..
First Time RIU Guest
[Details]
Riu Dunamar
Horrible food & experience
[Details]

AMAZING!!!!
Ensuite, on a fait notre check-in.
[Details]
Riu Dunamar experience
Great vacation
Wonderful Stay
Out Of The Way
We booked into the cheapest room, but still had a partial ocean view.
[Details]
