The Crown Jewel Of Cuban Resorts
If you're planning on a successful adults only vacation in Cuba, then look no further than Melia Cayo Coco.
For a bit of perspective, we've been travelling to the Caribbean for over 40 years, and vacation 8 weeks each year in Mexico, DR, and Cuba.
We were at MCC from June 6th to June 20th.
This was our 4th visit here since 2021.
I would summarize the resort as follows.
Beach: The beach is simply beautiful, better than anything we've found in the DR or Mexico.
White sand, very deep, plenty of spaced out palapas, you can walk long distances to the right or left. The water was clear, minimal seaweed, gentle entrance into the ocean.
A conveniently located beach bar and beach ranchon restaurant.
There are fun and games hosted by the animation team, or solitude should you seek to simply rest, recharge and swim.
Rooms: Our oceanfront 2nd floor room offered expansive views of palm trees and turquoise waters. Recently renovated, the AC was clean and efficient, glass walled walk in shower, and Caribbean inspired furniture. The room was clean, bar fridge was stocked daily with pop, beer, and water, and a 110v outlet in the bathroom for all of your charging needs.
Toilet and bidet worked well, hot water on demand in the sink and railhead shower.
The room was quiet, lots of lighting options, and the mattress was comfortable.
Resort: The resort is small, about 250 rooms, efficiently laid out in mostly 8 room villas. Pathways are beautiful, well lit. The gardeners keep everything fresh, beautiful colours at every corner.
There's a quaint Cuban feel to this resort. Charming touches at every corner set it apart from the newer chrome, glass and concrete resorts that are springing up everywhere.
Older resorts like MCC picked the best locations when they were built 26 years ago.
Food: We ate at each a la carte restaurant … International, Cuban, and Italian.
The food was very good, flavourful and of high quality.
The Italian is brand new and a design masterpiece, with beautiful art work, exposed brick, tasteful woodwork, cozy ambient lighting, greenery and even a rooftop outdoor adjoining terrace.
The Cuban is in a recently built authentic Cuban wood cabin. Cuban touches abound, from the rustic wood and leather chairs to a large herb garden sitting just off the patio. Talk about a farm to table dining experience!
The international sits atop the poolside snack bar, and offers both ocean views as well as sunset views while dining.
Speaking of sunsets, don't miss the chance to have a cocktail off the newly built deck in the billiard bar, located on the edge of the lagoon.
Buffet: we never tired of the bright new decor, or the vast food offerings in the buffet.
All of your standard Cuba resorts offerings. So many different hot food stations.
The head chef has really stepped up the offerings in terms of flavours, freshness, variety and desserts. My personal favourite was the rum flambé crepes with bananas, mango, and ice cream.
Hot food was hot, cold items were cold, and the cooks understand safe food handling practices.
Staff: This is what sets MCC apart. The staff is very well trained, with many career professionals with up to 25 years experience at this resort. And it shows.
The staff embrace their roles, and they're the best assets of MCC.
They are warm, welcoming, and efficient. Far too many to name, but we had wonderful interactions with the GM, Bernard, sales mgr Gippsy, Tamara in the lobby bar, Felipe the master gardener, Alberto the mayor of the beach, Jesus king of the beach bar, Ronaldo and Abel on dinner service, Ari and Betty at breakfast/lunch buffet, and Paris in the gym.
Each employee we interacted with exemplified the highest standards of hospitality.
Far too many to name, these are but a few.
Pool: plenty of loungers and Bali beds. No towel games played here, either at the beach or the pool.
Lots of shade, lots of sun. Thankfully, no swimup bar. The pool bar, snack bar, and buffet are all within a 1 minute walk from your lounger.
Pool is spotless. Actually, the entire resort is spotless, from public bathrooms to all public areas.
Cons: Obviously, we love this resort. Really no cons come to mind. If I were to nitpick, I noticed that supply issues meant no fresh eggs during our stay. But Charles, the omelette chef, created tasty omelettes with powdered eggs, fresh veggies, meats and cheeses. Buffet coffee was typically weak, but our lovely servers offered to run to the bar and fetch quality cappuccino's and coffees for us.
That's about it, and the cons really weren't noticeable.
We are in the process of booking a return trip to MCC for this October. If you want to experience an elegant, relaxing vacation at a resort that always consistently delivers the goods, then look no further than Melia Cayo Coco.
