Royal Barbados
We had very high expectations prior to coming as this was not our first Sandals experience. The rooms were ok. Nothing special as they are looking a bit aged but were kept very clean. Humidity is a major issue there and odour related to it in the rooms. Service was mostly good. My major issue was with the bar and drink service as well as the cleanliness of the beach loungers. The Spices buffet constantly had birds flying in on the table and around the food. I went once and refused to go back. The birds were constantly landing on drinks around the resort and going into the cups so you did have to be mindful of this. No one came around to pick up glasses when we were on the beach or at any of the bar areas. Most of the time we were getting up to bring our dirty dishes back to the bar. The beach tables and loungers were never cleaned. They had food and drink spills on the tables and the loungers had bird droppings. There was no one walking around the beach or bars taking drink orders. I would have expected better service. I don't know if there was a staffing issue or they just don't offer this at this Sandals. The concierge staff was helpful when we did have an issue with our room and when we had requests. The beaches were beautiful, the free hobie ocean rides fun, and we enjoyed the free snorkelling trip. The majority of the staff were friendly and helpful. The sit down restaurants were very good. Most of the food was enjoyable and the restaurants were very accommodating to requests. We went to breakfast and supper very early so had no issues getting tables. However, we heard other couples complaining who went later for dinner about wait times. You also had to book reservations as soon as you got there to get into the reserved restaurants. I think overall it was good, but for the price paid and the expectation of high quality Sandals standards it was lacking.

Nice, quiet hotel
We were there for Valentine's day and stayed a week. This small hotel is perfect if you want to spend a quiet and relaxing vacation. When we were there the guests were almost exclusively British and mostly above 50 years old. We were told that there is a lot of repeat guests all year around. The staff is exceptionally pleasant and friendly. The hotel being so small, they get to know you quickly. The hotel itself is generally in good condition and adequately maintained. Our room (#4) had a garden view. It was in OK condition but a bit small and dated in our opinion. Next time we will select a better room. The food is excellent. Most of the time you select your meal from the menu at lunch and dinner. A few times it was buffet style. Breakfast is always a buffet. There is also a couple of theme nights. They had a few shows in the evening and we enjoyed them. From the hotel you can walk to the beach (public beach). It is only a 2 minutes walk. You can snorkel right from the beach and you get to see plenty of different fish as well as turtles. No need to pay for an excursion. They rent chairs and umbrellas on the beach (20 USD a day) or you can put your towel directly on the beach. There are trees so you can be in the shade if you prefer. One thing we found awesome is that they bring the race horses at the beach to bathe and swim in the ocean on a daily basis. On Sunday there was about twelve horses in the water at the same time. You can also walk into Bridgetown. We did a lot of that. There are all sorts of things to see or do nearby such a horse racing track, historical museum visit, an extremely lively an interesting commercial street, etc. There are monkeys around the hotel even though it is right into town. We found this quite fun. Wifi works in the lobby but not in the rooms. It was our first time staying at such a small hotel but we really loved it. We seriously consider going back.
