So this will be long post but will give an honest review.
I went to Occidental Punta for my 10th visit from April 4th-13th. Our flight was delayed by 2 hours so was quite anxious to arrive at the resort. On our arrival we were greeted by Williams at reception. He was very friendly and very efficient. He listened to us and was happy to accommodate our wishes and gave us a room in the exact location that we had requested. Upon arrival to our room noticed our hair dryer was not working and spoke to Williams again at front desk and he had that fixed for us within the hour. Excellent customer service and emphasized anything we needed he was more than happy to help us! Anytime we were in the area he was always asking if everything was good! Thank you Williams for the excellent and efficient service!
Our room was on the main floor and other than two small issues one was the hairdryer and the other on our last night the air conditioning stopped working. Maintenance came to the room and had that fixed in no time! Cleaning staff did an excellent job at cleaning the room and keeping our fridge stocked. Sometimes we had to wait a few hours for our towels but they were always delivered before dinner and were clean and fresh!
Now on to the main buffet. Always had excellent service at the morning buffet. We had one waitress that went above and beyond (I wish I would have got her name) by not only getting us cappuccino instead of regular coffee and by bringing us fresh watermelon juice to the table. So good! Omelets of course we're fantastic! I had one several mornings and both omelet chefs were quick and efficient! Food was always fresh but did have a few instances where for example the potatoes were just warm but not enough to stop us from enjoying our meal! Both my friend and I are not big lunch eaters but we did have one lunch at the buffet as we missed breakfast. Service was good as was the lunch buffet food! Went to the buffet a few times at dinner and mainly on the Tuesday night as it is Mexican night. We had a late dinner around 8pm and I was disappointed. I do understand it was later in the service but considering the buffet is open until 10:30, the food was not the freshest and the tacos were chewy and taquitos were overcooked with the chicken being extremely dry. Burritos were good but not a favorite of mine. All other meals at the buffet were very good and food hot and fresh. Service at dinner could be a bit better as sometimes it was hard to receive a drink but again we made due and did not let it change our perspective of the resort.
On to the a la carte restaurants! We ate at the Mexican twice during our trip and service was excellent and on point! Pena the supervisor is excellent in making sure you have fantastic service, checking in frequently to make sure you are happy! All staff were friendly and happy to accommodate! Food was excellent, hot and fresh!
The Italian restaurant was great! Food was fantastic and service was good! Staff were all friendly , checking frequently to be sure we had everything needed!
Dined in the Oriental restaurant and Juan the supervisor was very friendly and made our visit there very pleasant! Food was fantastic and the service on point! Again the attention from Juan and staff was great!
Moving on to the steakhouse. Must admit this a la carte restaurant used to be one of my favorites but this time it definitely left a bad taste. The food was great and steak cooked to perfection! Baked potato more on the lukewarm side but steak made up for it. The service from the wait staff was great! What left me not exactly happy was the 2 supervisors there that were taking orders. We arrived in the restaurant and we seated promptly but we were ready to leave after sitting for 45 minutes and our order was not taken (both supervisors taking orders but not from our table) Hansel approached our table and asked if everything was OK. We explained that our order had not been taken yet and we were getting ready to leave. Hansel made it a point to get things moving along!! A waiter came over to take our order (still no supervisor had approached us so have no idea their names but one was male and the other female) So a big thank you to Hansel and the wait staff for the excellent service! What we did not like was the male supervisor who was not treating his staff very well and shouting orders at them when he himself was not doing his own job. Not once did either supervisor approach our table or even acknowledge our presence.
Unfortunately we did not attend the seafood restaurant so am unable to comment on that one!
On to staff/bartenders in the lobby! Waitresses in the lobby although very busy are very attentive and try to get to you quickly! Bartending service from Enrique, William and Luis were excellent! Not only are they very friendly they run the bar very efficiently serving customers quickly and making excellent drinks to please the customer!
Spent most nights at the bar upstairs where the bartending staff are excellent!!! The attention and service from Wilian, Jose, and Wanel was by far the best! Wilian even allowed us to connect to his Bluetooth speaker to play music and keep the energy going while they served the customers. They all made sure customers were satisfied with their drinks and were fast and efficient! All 3 of the bartenders were friendly and happy to be there!
Pizza of course was excellent as always with a special shout out to Tavery, Leo and Carlos! They work very well together and make the best pizza!!!
Pools, beach and maintenance of the grounds was always on point!
All in all had an amazing vacation! Have seen many changes in my visits with new staff and management some good and some bad but nothing that will ever ruin my vacation. Your vacation will always be what you make of it!!! [Details]

We arrived at around 1am so checkin was very quick, bell boy took us to our room, explained wher a few things were & we dropped off luggage & rode back up front to get some pizza at the all night snack bar. There were 200-300 college students there during the week, who were overcrowding the pizza & drink bars but finally got a pizza, very very good , Everything was great , pools were just the right temp, food at buffet was great, Steakhouse was excellent, everyone was so friendly, room was clean & comphy, bed & pillows very good, excellent beach , but hard to get chairs in shade at 8 am,
Checkout was very quick , but there was no where to securely store our luggage while we ate breakfast, Entertainment team was friendly, most activities were down at the beach, nightly entertainment was hit & miss, MJ was fantastic & a night with the stars was also great,

See Soel for breakfast and lunch amazing person always smiling and can tell he loves his job. Pool bar for quick service and great drinks. Yessi was amazing with the kids and Jorge made amazing drinks. The greeting staff at the buffet were top notch!

Slow service for the buffet, but in their defence it was also full of people and extremely busy. Still most of the time it was great.

Canadian Travellers Look for another resort than t

Came down to Occident Punta Cana to do a site inspection of the resort for my Travel Agency Business. I have stay at this resort back in January 2020 and now coming to see if the resort standard is improved, gone down or stayed the same.

This resort was last renovated in 2016 and according to hotel management, there are no plans shortly to renovate. This resort has 860 rooms.

On this trip, the food quality and variety were really poor. this was not what I expect from a 4.5 Star resort. This resort was more coming across as a 3-star resort. The service at the bars was very slow. Please note on weekends many locals Dominicans book this resort. 100 USD per person is a very attractive price point. In general Dominican people are very friendly but when they are guests they can be demanding and ignorant. This property is not a pleasant place for international travellers/guests during the weekends and the pool and bars become over crowed. There were also too many beach vendors approaching you even when you tell them you are not interested. Sometimes they huddle together and stand directly in front of your view just scanning the beach chairs. Security on the beach does not do anything to move them along.

As the owner of a travel agency in Canada, I can no longer recommend this property to my clients. Canadians are usually easygoing people and enjoy interacting with many different people and cultures. The biggest thing I think this resort can do to improve the service is better food and variety and have staff with a minimum level of speaking and understanding of English. As guests, we try very hard to speak certain words in Spanish, especially from countries like Canada and the USA which make up the majority of tourists to the Dominican Republic.

Overall if you are limited in budget, this resort may be one of your only choices. If you have a bigger budget look at another resort.

Nice location 30 min from airport. Beautiful beach, but little to no shade. Pools are good. Swim up bar smells like vomit. Rooms are average. I was served ahi tuna that tasted like it was fished in a septic tank, after having waited 42 min for our appetizers at the Asian restaurant. We never got our wine, we left for the buffet. More than 50% of the time I had to ask and re-ask and re-ask for a high chair. Only the front desk staff "speaks" English, the rest will say they do when you ask them because you have a specific question, then look at you talk for 2 min until you realize they have no idea what is going on. Other than the front desk staff, the rest are so rude, I will never go back to this area for that reason alone. Planned on doing laundry during the trip (kid) I called them 3 days in a row multiple times per day, they never came. Not sure where the majority of the travelers were from, but they could not form a simple line at the buffet, it was like the survival of the fittest, I saw people picking up food with their hands at the buffet. Wifi is shit. Could not make phone calls from my room. [Details]

Went with the family and had a great time! Hotel is I believe a little older but they take good care of it. Always cleaning the grounds, the public bathrooms and beach. Beach is great! Lots of people on the beach selling things but will leave you alone if you say no thank you. Our room was good. Maid would come by daily to tidy the beds and bathroom of needed. Great Holiday at Occidental Punta Cana

The Occidental Punta Cana is a good and modern resort. Grounds are very clean and well maintained. Beachfront is one of the best I have been in the Dominica Republic. The resort, every morning, cleans the beach of any overnight seaweed that wash up and they rake the beach. (There was very little seaweed when we were there in late Jan 2023).

The beach is wide and long so you don't seem crowed but the beach vendors and hotel upsell and general vendors on the hotel grounds are a real pain in the derriere. The hustle starts when you get off the plane and continues right up to when you leave!

Their staff are very friendly and if you provide them a tip the added value they provide is even better. We always tipped and the staff really appreciated it. In general, they make very small salaries so the xtra money helps them a lot.

We were in Block 25 which is very close to the beach and main pool. The rooms are spacious and modern. Bathrooms are shower only. The resort upsell vendor was pushy enough when it came to upgrading to the Royal Level. Rooms are bigger but not worth the price difference. Leave me alone...I am on my bloody holidays!

The main buffet was nice and the seating very modern. A great selection of food. They also had beachfront Buffet which was great for breakfast. As for the a la carte restaurants, you need to book these right when you arrive as the time slots fill up very quickly. We went to the Italian, Steak House and Mexican. They were all fine. On another note even though they had a dress code this rule was not enforced which I enjoyed very much. The last thing that I wanted to do was dress up for dinner. I am on holiday to relax! People came in shorts and sandals which suited me just fine.

The nightly outdoor entertainment was a lot of fun and the music that was played in lobby bar was entertaining. The young activity monitors were all just fantastic; Nicol, Marie, Jerry and of course Spaghetti (and the others) were all very charming and polite and full of energy.

Great staff everywhere. Great activity monitors. Good food. Beautiful beach. Reasonably priced. Modern and quite hotel. Very few noisy propane golf carts running around because you can walk everywhere and quickly. Resort just the right size!
The weak points
Noisy elevator in common area of each building. Bing every time the doors open. (Try 3am). Constant hustle from beach and hotel vendors. Always windy everywhere (can't do much about that!) They play the music too loud at the beach and at the main pool.

My experience at this hotel was average at best. Checkin was a nightmare, spent over an hour trying to get keys to the room and bracelets, though Leonardo tried to be as pleasant as he could. Food at buffets was awful as there was no variety at all.,as was drink selection and wines. Some of the staff were super engaging where as MOST were not issues with lights not turning off, safes not working , key cards deactivating. Seems like we were always at the desk for something. Great stay at Occidental

First I would like to praise the front desk staff lady Esmarlin Tejada, she did beyond amazing job getting my group of friends the best room upgrade and service possible for our entire week stay. The hotel itself is a great stay for couples and families, there was a range of ages. The disco is closed because of Covid sadly. There are two locations for main food servings. The best building to stay in is near the beach where the secluded pools are as it is quieter here. However the one thing I was not satisfied with is the entertainment, although the shows were great to watch, there was nothing else happening after that. I found it boring in the evenings as there was no disco or dancing, and for a 20 something year old a better nightlife would make this resort a 10/10 otherwise I give it an 8. The bar outside the resort drink point is an excellent escape for this sort of entertainment and is safe if you go with a group. [Details]

My Trip to Occidental Punta Cana

This is a late review, I was at the Hotel the week of my birthday (week of 27th November), In general the Hotel is good, The stuff too, The front Desk are all good, But Fermin was the best one, You cannot imagine how this guy is so helpful, he is so professional doing his work with more than 100%, each time I need an information or anything, I look for Fermin because I know he will help me with my concern, I want to thank him for making my journey with my Wife so beautiful, If I come back one day to that Hotel, I will make sure to call and ask if he is still working in that Hotel,
the things I didn't like is that the most of the stuff didn't speak neither French nor English, we do lot of efforts to understand what they want to say or what we want to tell them, I think a training with the basis will increase the happiness of visitors especially who don't speak Spanish, I was using my phone to translate each time,
my wife was pregnant and was so sick at the room and was so hangry, the responsible lady of the snack bar didn't let me take something to my wife, I tried to explain to her the situation and I know it's forbidden but in my case she needed to do an exception, a pregnant sick woman who cannot getup from the bed and who was so hungry !!! I think everyone can imagine the situation, instead of this the lady was so rude with me wasn't respectful, she is the same lady working at the entrance of the Mexican Resto I think (Resto at the 2nd floor right).
The last thing I wanted to speak about is food, some people are vegetarian or can eat only fish, the fish plates weren't that good, if you could increase the quality of this side, this will help too
at the end I can give my stay 8/10, and thank you everybody I really liked my stay at the Hotel, will come back one day for sure, but only if Fermin still working with you lol. [Details]

Our trip to the Dominican Republic was beautiful, and a much-needed transition from the restricted lives we've been living throughout the pandemic.

We arrived on September 3, 2021 and stayed at the Occidental Punta Cana. The weekends were quite heavily booked, but the capacity during the week greatly reduced with the majority of the remaining guests from Russia, Poland, Germany, the US, and Canada.
It was our first time staying at this hotel, and all-in-all must say that the staff and entertainment was wonderful, the food was great, and the accommodations were clean and comfortable.

The grounds are kept wonderfully clean, and the layout of the pools gave you an option to be in a very lively area or in one that was considerably more subdued. I'm not the type of person to take a vacation sitting next to the pool, but there may be reasons you might want to consider this, one of them being seaweed and something that many areas in the south experience this time of year. This did not deter me, as I was perfectly happy making use of the sea kayaks and catamarans that were included in the package. This is not to mention how therapeutic it is to lie on a chair by the beach taking in the sun while listening to the waves as they rolled in. Of course, there aren't many places you can go without being solicited by the local vendors who stroll along the beach. It was somewhat overwhelming at first, but then seemed to subside. We treated them with respect and they respected us. We saved our purchases for the final day on the beach, and for that, they were grateful.

As far as food is concerned, the resort features 11 restaurants with sit-downs (be sure to book them when you arrive) consisting of Italian, Oriental, Mexican, Seafood, and a Steakhouse. I didn't have a chance to try the Italian, but my personal favorite was the Mexican restaurant. All-in-all, the food selection was great and the quality was good as well. I only wish people would be forced to make a donation towards food banks for food that they pile upon their plates but don't consume. Clearly there are those that act upon a sense of entitlement without any regards to actual needs…..

The night entertainment varied between a band, a singer (Laribel - Dominican version of Chakra!), a person on a sax; all quite professional and certainly entertaining.

The room was very fresh and maintained perfectly during our stay.

Last but certainly not least was the hard-working and polite staff. Most notable was the front desk manager (Fermin), Alondra working in Guest Services, and German the waiter who all greeted us with smiles, tended to our needs, and spoke English really well; thank you being a great part of a memorable vacation; we will be sure to return!
