Excellent Vacation at Excellence Riviera Cancun
We have vacationed at the Excellence Riviera Cancun more than 15 times over the years. Some might suggest that we branch out but the amenities, location and especially the outstanding staff keep us coming back. While we're sure that most staff deserve excellent reviews; these are the women and men with whom we engaged on our recent trip and with whom we have the utmost gratitude, affection, and respect. The following staff members are listed in no particular order, but it should be noted that these superb folks keep us coming back. Laylan: Manager for the Excellence Riviera Cancun. There were 6 people in our group. After multiple travel delays and challenging incidents, we arrived at the resort tired, hangry, and irritable. We encountered further frustrations when we learned that our booking agents had not shared some of our specific requests with the resort. Customer service is often a thankless job, but we say thank you Laylan for all that you did for us. We recognize you and your enormous efforts. Your professionalism, effectiveness and calm approach turned grumpy customers into grateful customers. Thank you. It's important to note that an organization is only as good as its employees, and employees like Laylan help make the Excellence Riviera Cancun a terrific resort. Miriam: beach concierge in the Excellence Club. Miriam was an absolute delight. She was energetic, friendly, courteous, efficient, and professional at all times. Miriam went above and beyond, treated us like royalty and could always be counted on to provide excellent customer service. She was a highly effective team player. Thank you, Miriam, for your unceasing commitment and dedication. You always went the extra mile and as such, you are a wonderful ambassador for the Excellence Riviera Cancun. Eleuterio: resort gardener. While always busy with his numerous tasks, Eleuterio went out of his way to engage with us. This is a man who does extremely well with guests. He made us feel most welcome with his friendly, welcoming, and gracious manner, all the while, approaching his duties with passion (the gardens and grounds are beautiful). He was charismatic, thoughtful and customer focused, also going above and beyond. Eleuterio is a loyal and exceptional ambassador for the Excellence Riviera Cancun. Well done. Moises: pool waiter in the Excellence Club. Once you've met Moises and experienced his humour and infectious laughter, you will never forget him. We met Moises years ago and are always impressed with his dedication, high energy, efficiency, loyalty, and professionalism. He is a joy to know. Moises is a thoughtful, conscientious, and excellent team player who puts the comfort of guests first and foremost. A highly skilled and competent employee, Moises is also a remarkable ambassador for the Excellence Riviera Cancun. Carlos Senior: waiter at Magna Restaurant in the Excellence Club. We enjoyed 2 experiences with Carlos Sr. He was attentive, proficient, friendly, courteous, and professional. A skilled server, we noticed how other staff treated him with respect and dignity – obviously a fine mentor. Amir: waiter at Chez Isabelle (wine cellar). Here was a man with impressive knowledge and skill. With 6 people in our group, Amir exemplified professionalism with his friendly, respectful, and excellent customer service accomplished in an elegant and sophisticated manner. Alberto: waiter at Oregano Restaurant. Last but definitely not least. We have known Alberto for years in his many roles at Excellence. We are very proud to count him as a cherished friend. When I asked my wife Wendy to describe Alberto, she said, “kind; a lovely man!” While true, Alberto is also a loyal, dedicated employee with a wonderful, positive disposition. His talent and customer service are stellar, and his hard work takes the resort to new heights. The Excellence Riviera Cancun is fortunate to have Alberto on their team – another fine ambassador. Until next time Alberto . . . Phil and Wendy H. * * * * *

Royal Catalonia Tulum
The highlight of my trip was definitely the beach and the R&R. I never had to fight for a good spot on the beach, there were always lots of chairs, and there was ample opportunity to move around during the day for sun or shade depending on where the sun was at. The beach was clean and really well maintained, and I was able to enjoy a sunrise one day and a sunset rising of the full moon another day. So picturesque and a great way to spend the afternoon. I did not have to worry about anyone or anything outside of making sure I had sunscreen on and deciding what I wanted to do for dinner each night. The resort was beautiful and exceptionally well maintained, the staff were fantastic, and the best part that might be underrated for some but for me was so high on my list was the fact that I was traveling as a solo female and didn't once question my safety while I was there. There's no disco and it's more of a quiet, relaxing holiday type of vibe. After the first day, I just left my money and phone tucked away into my beach chair when I went into the water and had zero issues. I know they had premium amenities and extras for those guests that were members, but I don't feel like I missed out on anything by not being one. I felt just as valued as important as anyone else there. I also liked that the resort was smaller as it was really easy to navigate and beautiful to walk through the jungle path with the wildlife around to get to where you're going. These are minor, but what I would consider as downsides. With the resort only having one pool, although it's a good size, sometimes it's hard to get a chair depending on how many people are checking in/sticking around/checking out each day. There were a few days it got windy in the afternoon on the beach and I couldn't find a spot until fairly later in the day by the pool. My preference was the beach for sure, but would have enjoyed being able to spend more time at the pool if the opportunity was available. There are signs up saying guests cannot reserve chairs, but that didn't stop people and didn't seem to be all that enforced. Also, with only having a la cartes for dinner except for Saturdays, sometimes I found the options a bit limited and the food at the a la cartes was inconsistent. I didn't have a bad meal at any of the a la cartes, but I did have some that weren't as good as previous ones and there is one restaurant where I ordered the same dish twice. My preference was the buffet as there were so many choices, but I did know what the food availability looked like going into the resort. Lastly, I'm not sure what kind of impact it would have had as I just waited in the lobby for under an hour for my transfer on the checkout day, but they do actually cut your wristband off. I know that typically you can go enjoy the resort while being checked out of your room while waiting for the transfer, but I'm not sure if that would be the case here with no wristband.

Only 1 complaint, but will not return because of
We have stayed at BP Sian Kaan many times but we were traveling with children this time so we selected Tulum. I have 1 single complaint that would cause us to never choose this hotel again... This hotel has a number of great aspects, if it weren't for the 1 issue we had, we would happily return and recommend it to friends and family. We stayed in building #2 (Premium Superior) which has been renovated ... great location, housekeeping keeps rooms nice, well stocked mini bar (we leave a note asking for what we want with a couple bucks every day on mini bar ). They have transitioned to wrist band door keys instead of key cards which is a great improvement! We stayed mostly near kids club pool area, which is a great spot... (watersides, splash pads, playground)(close to self serve drink station, food booths, bathrooms, towel exchange, etc) pools were a comfortable temperature all week! There is no shortage of lounge chairs, especially if you want to be on the beach... literally 100s of empty chairs everyday! If you want a prime spot directly in front of pool, you need to come out by 8am... but if you're not fussy about where you sit you can come anytime. Food is good, buffet is typical buffet food with a good selection. The 2 snack bars near family pool are good and quick if you just want burgers, dogs, fries, etc. This is a large resort so be prepared to walk, or take the trolley... trolley system also takes you to other hotels and run fairly frequently. You can easily walk to hacienda in about 6-8 minutes from Tulum lobby. Spa is nice, I had a nice massage and it was exactly the same as what I have had at Sian Kaan. Beach is just OK... not great... sand is nice and white and water is fairly clear... but it is quite rocky and this time of year the seaweed was pretty thick... still nicer than fighting through snow, but definitely not the nicest beach you will ever see. So now for our complaint... as I mentioned above we stayed in a renovated room... and I'm not sure what kind of drunken sailor designed them, but I prefer a little privacy in the bathroom! The sink and shower are not separated from the rest of the room... when you step out of the slightly frosted glass shower, you can see directly out patio window... the toilet is separated with a mirrored glass door that does not fully block vision and does not block any sound or smell and there is no fan to help clear the air... this design makes absolutely no sense and is bad enough for a couple, but families with teenage children or friends traveling together will absolutely hate it! For this reason alone, we will not return or recommend to family or friends. I certainly hope they don't use the same stupid design when they start renovating Sian Kaan, we love it there and will be going back there many more times... I would hate to have move to a different hotel because of careless bathroom design!
