Good Stay - Deceiving Room Descriptions

, Amherstburg, ON
2024-10-21
We just stayed at Dreams Onxy Oct 12-19. We did a lot of research on their website before booking to ensure we booked a specific type of room - we wanted adults only and swim out pool. The website (and hotel map) is very deceiving as it appears that booking a "preferred" room with swim out pool is adults only, which is NOT the case. We got to our room after check in, and realized we were on the all ages side, in a room that is closest to the beach (which you THINK would be the best), however, these last buildings by the beach's swim out pools are CONNECTED to the larger all ages pool... It was absolutely disgusting. We walked out onto our deck which had an old rotting muffin smashed right into the deck, a huge plate of dirty left over food and cigarette butts..indicating they don't clean/ check the balconies/ decks between stays - OR that someone from the pool just threw their food onto it since its WIDE OPEN to the larger pool.. It was chaotic, loud and LOADED with kids. So even if you HAVE kids, I would highly recommend asking for a room with a swim out NOT connected to the larger pool. None of this is described as an option on their website so I'm assuming you'd have to call to ask for it specifically....which is frustrating.
We went back to the front desk to ask for a swim out on the adults only side, which we were then informed is a "private pool swim out" and cost us almost $1000CAN extra that we obviously had NOT planned for.
If we would have known the price for the room we originally wanted, we probably wouldn't have booked it in the first place since it was outside of our price range, but we could not stay in the original room...
We had to wait until the next day at 5pm to move..so we had almost two days of our trip in the first room.
Once we moved, the "private pool swim out" room was amazing. They're absolutely beautiful and that whole adults side is very nice. The pool is quiet and relaxing, and the service was excellent.
HATE that they don't have bracelet room keys. They advertise this like a good selling point but in our opinion having to ensure your key card is with you at all times is SO ANNOYING. My husband lost one in the water park on the second day, and we got locked out of our room another time. The bracelet keys is wayyy better option. Also, we are used to having coloured bands so that staff can distinguish which side of the resort you are on. We realized we could have 100% paid for a normal room and used the "preferred" adults only pool every single day and probably the food places as well as there is no identifying way to know you're not preferred..
The food was decent, very "hit or miss". Overall would rate a 7/10 for a 5 star resort.
The service was excellent, alcohol had great options and the wine was great too.
Nelis at the adults only pool was the most amazing server we've ever had and definitely deserves a huge shout out! She made our day seeing her each day :) sooo kind, funny and fast!
Victor Ortega (whoop whoop!) at the lunch buffet and dinner steak restaurant was also a favorite. He made us laugh every day and was super attentive in his service.
The butler service is useless, absolutely not needed and didn't use.
The beach was beautiful, loved that there were lots of palm trees over the chairs for shade and beauty. However, lots of pushy hustlers on the beach that constantly bug you to buy things/ get massages and are rude when you decline.
Coffee shop, ice cream parlor and burger joint are all nice touches. The arcade for kids is amazing although a lot of $$..
The water park is bomb! Even for adults we had a blast on the water slides and lazy river.
Overall, great resort but wouldn't do it any other way that the private swim out room adults only side. Wish their website had better descriptions of the resort layout and the room options. For a couple that want absolutely nothing to do with a kids resort, that's the most important thing to us when finding our getaway destination. [Details]

We had a great experience as a family. We have a 10 and a 12 year old. The water park with slides and lazy river is really nice. There are a LOT of young families with babies and young kids. So if you are looking for adult time and peace and quiet go to the adult only section. [Details]

Couple best vacation

From the beginning till the end it was a great vacation. The check in at the premium desk was smooth, we were seated, offered coffee, sweets and drinks. We arrived early so the room wasn't ready which gave us time to go have lunch. We got a room by the water park with a nice terrace. The room was clean, spacious and welcoming. The buffet, the a la carte, they all served good food and provided good service by very nice people. We would like to mention a few names: Leidy Chantal, Rosalia, Mercedes, Erica, Isabel, Franklin Jimenez. There were other people that were nice to us but sorry we do not remember all the names. In general every one we interacted with was nice and helpful with a smile on their face. We would like to say thank you to Vida who every morning welcomed us with a smile on her face and fresh towels. The beach is nice, clean, we enjoyed our long walks. The water was warm with beautiful tides. The entertainment team provided us with various activities, laughs and energy. We would like to mention here Alex (Denis Rodman), Grey, Ricardo (Big H). It was one of the best vacation we ever had and we've traveled quite a bit. We will return for sure. [Details]

Upon arrival at this hotel, I was not expecting a 4 page check in document. What a waste of time. Then the bell boy pointed to my room and handed me my luggage!! Get to my room, one light won't shut off, one won't go on, and the shower leaked. After my first day everything went well, and all the room problems were fixed. [Details]

Dreams Onyx Resort and Spa vacation

, Kanata, ON
2023-03-24
Dreams Onyx is not a 5* resort in my opinion I would rated a 3.5*-4*. Our room had a musty smell and was extremely damp and humid all the time. I installed 4 damprids in the room but they were not very helpful. The Resort should provide dehumidifier in rooms. The bedding and our cloths were always damp. The overhead fan kept entertaining us with its squeaky noise every day...twice the resort handy person tried to fix it. Housekeeping always kept the room was clean and the bedding was changed twice a week. The meals were good but often too salty or not hot enough. The staff at the buffet spoke some English but communicating with some was a challenge at times. Our butler, Elias, managed to get a wheelchair and a shower chair for my husband which were greatly appreciated. Since we were staying at the resort for 2 weeks we decided to rent a scooter from ScooterDR for my husband. I found out during our stay that we could have rented one through the Resort. [Details]

The weak points
The following should be addressed by the Resort: dampness in rooms, check the air conditioner and make any necessary repairs in rooms before visitor day of arrival and make sure the room smells fresh and clean.

Amazing Trip!

The hotel was by far the nicest and cleanest hotel I have stayed at during an all inclusive vacation. With the preferred club upgrade, it was so worth the extra money. There were many options for the a la carte's and we had our own person to request our dinner reservations with no issues.
The junior swim up suite was the perfect room and was so nice to have an area to swim and access the preferred club bar within walking distance instead of using the common pool areas.
Staff were superb and very welcoming! Will highly recommend to others. [Details]

Sanitary measures
All staff were wearing masks and when entering a building you were asked to put a mask on and use sanitizer. Felt very comfortable during the trip.

Beautiful Resort and the Ultimate Experience

, Windsor, ON
2021-12-04
We just returned from our vacation at this luxurious hotel.
STRONG POINTS: The weather was perfect. The resort was lush with so many beautiful pools, swim outs, plunge pools and also infinity pools. We had access to the Breathless Resort as well, giving you so many options for food, pools, daily activities etc. We highly recommend the Preferred Option, especially having a separate restaurant/bar area for breakfast/lunch. Our airport experience both there and back was the quickest experience ever making the whole travel stress free. We had the best sleep with their super comfortable mattresses and pillows. The beaches were clean with little to no seaweed in our area. There was a wide variety of restaurants at both resorts available to you. A shout out to Aris our Butler for making our restaurant reservations and helping with setting up our PCR testing. Abraham was an awesome poolside server who always brought a smile to your face. The hotel was definitely not at full capacity, maybe 80% and found the pool areas to not be crowded at all. We booked an excursion to Saona Island which I would highly recommend to everyone. However expect the whole experience to take a full day but worth every minute of it.

WEAK POINTS: You could not adjust the temperature in your room and the air conditioners were set almost too cold, but great for sleeping. The nightly shows were lacking. There was minimal wildlife which we always like to see. The Wifi was not strong throughout the resort but best in the front lobby. Covid screening was more prominent at the Breathless resort. We were not impressed with the Mexican restaurant and did not try the Hibatchi or Italian as we were enjoying the French and Steakhouses the best. There was a large variety of food at the buffets but would have hoped for more of a variety or even some kind of theme nights. [Details]

The worst experience in a resort!

, Thornhill, ON

This resort was a huge disappointment! It is advertised as a 5* resort but it is far from it. Let me be brief and outline the problems that we have encountered: the food was beyond disappointing, breakfast buffet extremely frustrating. Be prepared to wait in a line for everything as there is only one person per station. The preferred upgrade is a joke and a waste of money. The service slow and unreliable. The resort itself is not attractive and lacks character. I would not recommend this resort or the Now brand. [Details]

When first booking this resort we weren't very happy because they refused our family of 5. Our three children are 8, 5 and 20 months. After a very long back and forth discussion with the resort we cancelled our family vacation and just did a couples vacation. In the end we are very happy with everything. There however would have been ample room for our children in our room. Which was the reason we were given.
The resort is gorgeous. The staff was amazing from the cleaning staff, bell boys, reception and restaurant servers, entertainement team, etc. [Details]

We had a fantastic stay at NOW Onyx. We have stayed at over 20 All Inclusive and this is really the first 5 Star and certainly the best of the group. It is really over the top. Where do I start..........amazing food..............over the top service..........the best booze you can find anywhere............Beautiful rooms and grounds.............fantastic entertainment................THE PREFERRED CLUB!!.......
If you can afford the Preferred Club, go for it. You will never want to leave this place. Absolutely worth the money. Make sure you specifically ask for Mr. G (Garbriel), as your butler, as we have never found a more amazing butler than this person. He is never in the your face, but takes care of things before you know you need things taken care of.......lol. This guy is top notch. I own a company with over 1000 employees and I would love to steal this guy and move him up to Canada. Ask for him by name and he will take care of you!! [Details]

Wedding Nightmare

, Kimberley, BC
2017-04-23
We never got to stay at the Now Onyx resort, but we feel confident in leaving this one star review based on the nightmare we had trying to book our wedding there.

In December of 2016 my fiancé and I decided that we were going to have our wedding at the Now Onyx resort in Punta Cana and submitted the paperwork to reserve the dates of December 1st- December 15th 2017. We paid a deposit of $300US directly to the resort to reserve our wedding day, as well as a separate deposit of $500CAD to our travel agents to reserve our flights and rooms for about 40 people at the Now Onyx resort. We sent many emails to the resort with questions about wedding packages and prices that went unanswered.

Around March we noticed that the Now Onyx had no available rooms online, which we found odd being we were still months before our wedding date. After one of our group booking members requested a room upgrade that was denied due to a lack of room availability, we knew something was wrong. We sent emails to the Group Manager at the resort asking if room would become available and if we would have full access to the resort during our wedding stay as it seemed to us another large group was booked. The reply only said our guests joining us from Europe would have to stay at another resort for the first 5 days and come over for our wedding. Our follow up email to the Group Manager was never replied to.

Next, we sent the same questions to an AM resort representative (the Now Onyx parent chain) for Western Canada. He contacted the resort who then had the Sales Manager and Wedding Coordinator phone us to let us know that there was a booking error and the resort was hosting a music festival during part of our dates and even though we had our deposit down for months we would not be able to get married at the resort during those dates anymore. They we very apologetic when they told us that we could no longer have those dates for our wedding group and suggested they we move our dates a few weeks earlier or later and that they would give us “the wedding of our dreams complimentary” as well as arrange the travel changes with our airlines.

Most of our emails and phone calls to the Wedding Coordinator after that phone call went unanswered until my fiancé and I asked if our wedding could be moved 2 weeks prior to our original dates. Shortly after, we received paperwork to be filled out with an invoice for full price of the wedding totaling $3200. We sent an email to the resort clarifying that despite their booking error and our date changes we would still have to pay the full amount. After not receiving a reply for well over a week so we resent the email a second time, at which point they replied that yes, we would have to pay full price for the wedding. Next our travel agent contacted the airlines to see if the resort had arranged the new travel arrangements with them where we learned that the resort had provided the airlines with incorrect new dates.

Neither our travel agent or airline supplier were informed of this double booking by the resort and we had to contact them ourselves to try and straighten everything out. Even though the travel agent and airline were not at fault for this happening where as the Now Onyx did not accommodate to us in any way for their error. Only after we requested to cancel the wedding due to some very crucial people being unable to attend the new dates and the resorts lack of ability to communicate with us did they even try to offer us a very vague “if there is anything we can do to change your mind” which we felt was far too little, too late. We had to send several emails to the resort to get our wedding deposit refunded, even though our contract clearly stated that it would be returned to us as long as we cancelled no less than six months before the wedding date and thanks to our wedding deposit being returned in Dominican currency when we had to pay in American currency we didn't even get back the full amount we had paid due to the different exchange rates. Our email to the Now Onyx manager has gone unanswered.

We understand that booking issues can happen, but the slow responses and complete lack of any help or information was completely unacceptable. Had we not found the booking issue ourselves and inquired about it, who knows how long it may have been before the issue was found, if it all. For these reasons we cannot recommend the Now Onyx resort to anyone. [Details]

Our NOW ONYX spring break vacation!!

, Burlington, ON
2017-04-18
This was an fantastic property and it offered many benefits that come along at extra costs with other hotels.
For example they have unlimited al la carte dining and no wrist bands. It was a great service with a smile and they were always saying it was a pleasure to help you and our glasses of wine or beer or water were never left empty. The beaches are amazing and the pools were warm and inviting!
I do recommend this property for any family, couples or honeymooners stay. Especially if you upgrade to the preferred rooms with adult only pool access and private plunge pools with day beds. It was a 5 star experience without paying the 5 star pricing. I would go back in a heartbeat to this property and refer to family & friends [Details]

Don't Waste your time or money on this resort

, Bedford, NS
2017-01-02
We knew there would be some problems with a new resort but, not like this. First of all they were filming the week we were there for their advertising. We were told not to use the beach, pool, lobby bar etc. many times during the trip. Many of us were getting tired of this when we clearly paid for a resort and not to be told not to use the facilities.

Food was just okay, mostly over cooked and never warm. We have been to Punta Cana about 9 to 10 times and are certainly aware of what to expect from different resorts.

Rooms were hardly cleaned and towels and clean face clothes we had to beg for. Yes, the showers leaked into the bedrooms and the safe did not work, broken toilet seat, fan made loud noises etc.

Beach was nice, always windy at this part of Punta Cana though. Did not find it hard to get a seat with shade.

Pools tables were all broken and the resort was only opened 5 weeks.

The English was almost completely non existent. Most staff were new and did not have experience or could only speak a couple of words of English. Never found this in the other resorts we stayed in.

The Preferred Club is a joke. Not worth the extra for what you receive.

You can use the resort next door Breathless if you want. It was over crowded and many came from that resort that were not preferred and used all the spaces and umbrellas at the Adult Only pool. No one wears bracelets and so, if you did not pay for the preferred club ...........you could basically use all the facilities and no one could tell. Silly set up for sure.

All in all we would not return. Although it was a beautiful resort it sure is poorly run and the staff could not careless. Good luck ever talking to the Resort Manager. He does not get back to you. [Details]
