Great value, huge beach and genuinely kind staff

We really enjoyed our stay at Decameron Isla Coral and felt it offered very good value for the price. The food was good for an all-inclusive in this range. The main restaurant is a standard buffet, but there were rotating Mexican-themed nights that added some variety. The à la carte restaurant was a welcome change, with well-presented food and impeccable service which was a nice break from the buffet atmosphere. The staff throughout the resort were genuinely lovely and welcoming. The beach is one of the resort's biggest strengths which reminded us of Long Beach in Tofino, very large and lots of space to walk but unlike long beach, it has warm warm water. Compared to the Los Cocos, the sister resort, Isla Coral has considerably more beach in front, which we really appreciated. It's also easy to walk along the beach to the sister resorts and stop in for a drink or even a meal. [Details]

The weak points
Not enough lounge chairs at the pool or on the beach Drinking water was harder to get than beer Needed to go to La Peñita for an ATM (BBVA bank). Difficult to get pesos or exchange Canadian dollars.
Sanitary measures
Observed staff regularly checking buffet food temperatures. Rooms were well cleaned by caring staff

Great beach, mediocre resort

Spent a week over Christmas at the Decameron Isla Coral. Wasn't expecting luxury, but was hoping for more than what we found. This is a decent option if you are looking for a great beach for a reasonable price and don't care about amenities, activities or “extras”. Rooms are super basic - nowhere to unpack your clothes except for a single tiny bedside table. Shower was awful - no hot water, and the water came out as a trickle. Food is very repetitive, bland and basic. The buffet “themes” were just variations on the same items. Was longing for guacamole and never saw any! The à la cart is only open on Fridays and is very limited for space. This applies to all 3 of the Decamerons in Guayabitos, which are essentially identical to each other, so you really only get 1 meal option. There is no transportation between the 3 resorts. You can either pay for a taxi or walk 20ish minutes. And the front desk staff (if they will talk to you rather than just glaring or rolling their eyes) will tell you that you need a reservation to eat at the other 2 buffets, but the reservation system generally doesn't work as it relies on the terrible Wifi. Pool is tiny and mostly used by families with young kids. It's surrounded by the U-shaped building, so is mostly in the shade and doesn't have a view of the ocean. The beach is spectacular. Clean, soft sand. Water is warm and shallow in the area in front of the resort, so very safe to swim. Vendors are quite aggressive and relentless. Limited beach chairs, so get up early and place your towels. [Details]

The strong points
The beach! Juan the bellman and Olga the omelette lady - both are lovely people. Great restaurants in Guayabitos and La Peñita.
The weak points
Rude front desk staff, awful shower, rock hard beds, bland repetitive food.
Sanitary measures
Hotel was clean and tidy.

The staff there make a huge effort to make sure that you're happy. Every time when we were searching for an item on the buffet Food & Beverage manager Alfonso went into the kitchen and produced it for us. Apparently no one had ever heard of having bacon with your eggs for breakfast or drizzling oil and vinegar on lettuce and other outlandish practices such as toasting a slice of white bread. All in all a pleasant holiday full of surprises and moments of astonishment. [Details]

The strong points
Prime location on the beach in Rincon de Guayabitos. Very attentive and helpful staff.
The weak points
Far from Puerto Vallarta. Trips can take 2 hours, if you're stuck behind a slow moving vehicle. Food is good, but not up to western standards. Basic items are lacking (toaster, bacon, oil and vinegar, etc.).

Decameron isla coral

Overall a great experience. However the hotel does not have that Mexican atmosphere I was looking for. Lacking colour and felt very sterile. No gardens or trees...no space for them either. Pool is nice but shaded for most of the day. Food is good . There was a photo shoot and it was amazing how full the buffet suddenly became. Fancy drinks in fancy glasses. Not like that normally. Just for the pictures. Rooms clean but basic, again no colour. Nice balcony but needs a table. We brought the one that was inside to the balcony. Nice beach [Details]
