Second time at GFA - Great family vacation

, Vancouver, BC
2023-10-20
Our first visit was before we had kids, and the quality of stay was exceptional The hotel caters for both relaxing and partying, with those two worlds separate. The price point likely keeps the demographic of guests in a category that keeps the vibe chilled and respectful. Whilst not marketed as a family resort, they cater to little kids well. Beach and hotel were spotlessly clean. Food quality remains very high, and you can see the pride they staff have in their job.

We learned our lesson from our first visit that you will get put in a terrible room, depsite paying a premium for specific rooms/areas. Fr our second visit, we actually cbtacted the hotel before departure and got them to clarity n writing and on a map where our room will be. Depsite this, we still got put in a terrible room and had to hassle mgmt to get moved on day 2. The room we paid for and they committed to, was actually not even functional (as the entire block was under renovation), so after a lot of stress we got moved to the perfect room on day 2. This process essentially sucked the joy out of the first 2 days of the 7 day trip (just like last time). But with older parents and a 2 year old with us, the move was necessary. Remaining 5 days were exceptional.
It's a great hotel if you want to remain active, as it's on a hillside so you cover a lot of ground. Not ideal hotel for strollers or anyone with issues climbing stairs/ramps. They do have frequent gold carts to help people get around. The gym is great and has pano views.
We will be back, but once again, will get the hotel to commit in writing the specific room/area before arrival to give us half a chance of getting what we need/paid for. [Details]

The strong points
Food quality, service and surroundings at hotel are world class. Sunrise to sunset views. Has a more authentic feel so you actually feel like you're in Mexico, unlike other hotels that are overly Americanized and sterile.
The weak points
Checkin is a breeze, but I advise to always ask detailed questions on your room prior to taking your bags to the room. On both visits, we were put in terrible rooms despite paying a premium. Needed to change rooms.
