Worst resort and the worst holiday i have ever had

, Kitchener, ON
2024-12-21
I booked a 2 week vacation at this resort. BIG MISTAKE! It was a bday trip. It was crap from the start and only got worse. I requested a quiet room, top floor, king bed. As a single person, I already pay more for the holiday per person than a couple gping but that doesn't matter to RIU. They actually treat your worse by the staff, especially as a single woman. After checking in, I recieved a room in the 7block on the ground floor. It had a very potent odor of mold, which as an asthmatic and allergic to mold was not going to work, alos they pushed 2 beds together to make a king bed. I went immediately to change the room. They gave me a room in block 2 on the second floor. This room also smelled of mold, but inwas exhausted from our 9 hour flight and to annoyed to change it again. The next morning I went to the fro t desk and requested a move again, they said they had no rooms available to suit my needs. The noise at this resort was beyond concert level. The screaming drunk people, the pounding music from different pool locations with Dj's competing for attention drove me to insanity. I slept a couple nights in that room, immediately getting a respiratory infection from the mold. If i was lucky i got 6 hours sleep in 4 nights. I had to sleep with ear plugs and my beats headphones on top to try and block out some of the noise which goes til 5am and then start all over agin. I requested it to be fixed. It worked a couole times and then didnt work again. I called 3 times for water and coffee to be fefilled in one day. At 1030pm they finally brought up coffee, but not water. I was sick and needed water. You can't drink the tap water at this resort. The safe didn't work either I that room. I had to carry my passport and money around, which is not safe. I asked to be moved again and also to be moved to their sister resort at the Riu Baja Camifornia, but they said there was no availability there. They said room in block 4 was available and should be quieter. By this time I had spent the majority of my first week moving 3 times and trying to get some help from the front desk. The manager was very rude, I cooperative and not willing to try and make things better. After 2 nights in this cramped, noisy, hotel I eventually paid to move to the Riu Baja Californai. They wouldn't even pay the 100 pesos to move my luggage over. I walked it with a bell boy. They made no efforts to arrange ge this resort change, I had to do it by myself (by walking back and forth between the hotels) and pay for an upgrade of 800 Usd on top of my 3400 CDN I had originalky paid. This resort was packed, the pools were full, the chairs reserved by people who put their towels down and then didn't come back for hours as they went to eat or sit in the pools. The restaurant staff I found to be rude. The pool bar staff were also rude unless you tipped extremely well. The rooms were not clean to Cdn standards. I am pretty sure there was bodily fluids on the couch and what looked like blood around bathroom light switch. I saw hotel patrons doing blow on the beach which they bought from the merchant selking t-shirts, within the roped off area and around kids. THERE WAS NO WHERE ON THIS RESORT WHERE ONE COULD FIND PEACE AND QUIET AT ALL.
I didn't see any security staff, and trust me there was a lit of drunk people and drugs.
I never saw any staff member checking the water quality of the pools or cleaning the pools.
We booked a 6pm time on the pickelball courts. We got there early and thank goodness because there was no lights on the courts. We had to finish early. 2 of the paddles were damaged out of 4. I reported this to the front desk staff as well.
Horrified by the lack of customer service and the staff. I will never return to any RIU hotel ever agin.
P.S THE BAJA CALIFORNIA WAS NOT MUCH BETTER. THE ROOM WAS MORE SPACIOIS AND SOMEWHAT QUIETER AT NIGHT. THE HOUSEKEEPING WAS BETTER BUT THE SAME APPLIED TO THE POOLS, NOISE AND DRUGS. Also, I booked a tour from Delta excursions at the hotel and they left without me on the return. The staff there saying they have nothing to do with excursions being sold on their property and Delta took no responsibility for it either.
You can't swim near the beach due to rip currents and the pools were too loud and crowded.
The internet barely ever worked throughout the resort, probably due the pure size of it and the amount of people. I had to pay for roaming and had a sizeable phone bill on my return. Albeit this has nothing to do with the hotel, my visa was declined at pharmacy on the main strip by the marina, because it was flagged by my Canadian bank. Use cash at any pharmacy.
Honestly, this 2 week trip was a nightmare and I wish I would have never booked it. [Details]

This hotel was well maintained and with a good group of staff. The layout of this hotel is also done nicely. The food needs to have maybe a bit of an upgrade. The specialty dinning has to many restaurants which are Buffet style and only two of them have direct dining with a limited assortment to choose from. Otherwise I had a great time and I would definitely return to this location. [Details]

We are a family of 3 and stayed at the RIU Santa Fe and we do not regret it! RIU offers a variety of entertainment for families and those wanting to party. The room was incredible with a beautiful shower and comfy beds. Our view over looked the quiter side of the resort (ocean view would've been nice, but way louder). The food was delicious with lots to choose from (Italian Restaurant was delicious). This a very big place that requires a lot of walking. The parties do get quite loud, even after it's over so bring ear plugs, but this only bothered us on the White Party night. They have great entertainment every night for the younger kids and things going on in their main foyer. Overall we were very pleased and would stay here again. [Details]

Maintained immaculately! Lots of spots to get chairs by the pools before noon (lots of shaded areas too). Many bar/drink areas. View of the famous rock formation from the pools/beach area is beautiful! Water slide options was a fun thing!
The weak points
The Steak house wasn't the greatest. We had to get in line 45 minutes prior to it opening and weren't overwhelemed by the food. They do not reserve so once they open and seat however many it's a come back and try again later in the evening.

Our first time in Cabo we had a great time at this hotel for the first time and would consider it again in the future. We would recommend being aware of your desired hotel room location as the environment differs greatly across the resort. Villa 7 is the waterfront villa and offers a quieter buffet option, amazing pool, two snack sources and one restaurant (also the buffet for breakfast). Other Villas are closer to: Parties (back of Villa 7), Waterpark / family activities etc. We visited during the second week of US Spring Break (Canadian Spring Break at the time). It was nice to have options to o to quieter locations of the hotel during different periods of the day and as long as you are out by 9AM you will have no problem getting a lounge chair. [Details]

In room alcohol and mini fridge all included were great. Great beach, view, swimming and reasonable walking distance (20 min) to downtown. Vendors were also reasonably respectful (although abundant). Bartenders were phenomenal.
The weak points
Food was good at the two buffets, however the 6 restaurants (we did not eat at Kulinarium) were not quite the sit down experience we expected. Front desk was not as helpful as we wished during a couple inquiries, but that may be individual not the resort

I found the resorts set up with many Villas appealing and the trees, bushes and grounds are beautifully upkept. The buffets were delicious and huge variety of food.
The pools were spacious with many lounges and many poolside conveniences like bar service and cleaning staff, and taco stands.
I would not recommend going during spring break week unless you're a young college student. Then it would be the best.
Some staff were obviously exhausted and abit grumpy by the 2000 young people drinking and yelling and having good times.
The room was adequate but had no duvet cover, awful pillows, no robe or slippers offered.
The entertainment was very good.
I would consider going back another week for sure. [Details]

What a party!

, Calgary, AB

Everything was just amazing to be honest. I love party and Santa Fe delivered it in astonishing way. The food was my only disappointment as the buffet wasn't good at any of the restaurants. I had to live with Burger and nachos and wings for whole 7 days. Especially Sakura, which has the options for Tandoori chicken, daal makhni etc but no where close to the quality. I compared with the last hotel I stayed in Canun Grand park royal which had no party no fun but food was amazing even when I am more inclined towards chicken and veggies dishes. I had to go to Namastey India in Cabo city to eat food and feel comfortable. [Details]

It was amazing! Weather was great! Pool was nice and clean! Food was fantastic! The only complaint we have is the safe not working properly and having to get it reset 3 times and then not coming ontime or even close to ontime! My wife spent 5 hours in the room waiting for a scheduled time for 9am and again for noon. Very horrible customer service on their part for that. Bathrooms did not flush properly around the resort and I think they need more for the amount of people that stay there aswell. Other then that it was fantastic! We would go back again! [Details]

Nice resort if you like to party

, Abbotsford, Br
2023-03-20
The hotel itself is nice - it's clean, staff is friendly and very attentive. The food is mediocre, at best. If you like eating the same thing over and over again, then you'll be fine. It seems the food gets recycled from one restaurant to the next (meaning if it isn't eaten at breakfast, you'll see it at lunch and dinner, and then again the next day..... in some new shape or form). We did go to every a la carte restaurant, but always found ourselves disappointed, leaving midway through the meal to hit the buffet - at least we knew what we were getting there...

We sadly didn't do our research. We didn't know this resort is very well known as the "party resort", where all the college 20-somethings go for a good time and a 24-7 party. It was US college spring break during our time there (we're from Canada... a bit different here), but after surveying a few people who've been before, it sounds like it's really no different at any other time of the year. It was very much a frat-sorority sex party the full duration of our stay with loud, drunk young adults everywhere. The middle pool by the main buffets though, was our saving grace, which had a few more of us 30-40 year olds looking for any sort of reprieve from the party-party-party that lasts until the wee hours of each and every morning.

If I was in my early 20s looking for a good time, 'free' booze, and didn't care what I ate to keep me sustained throughout the week, this resort and experience would have been a lot of fun.

If you're 30 , this likely isn't the experience you're looking for. [Details]

Unfortunately we, at not fault of the hotel, were delayed 26 hours getting to Cabo. But we certainly made up for it when we did. Amazing resort easy check-in and clean well appointed accommodations. Resort food is always different than home but the quality here even at the buffet was as good as you could hope for and the steakhouse was amazing. As a pro tip ask for lobster tail on top of your steak. Yummy. Pools were super clean and pool bars attentive. Stop hesitating and book this resort now we certainly are again next year. [Details]

Beautiful grounds BUT too loud, lacked housekeeping

, Edmonton, AB
2022-04-11
Unfortunately the beautiful grounds and scenery on this resort is not enough to get me back there again. Initially we were placed in a room very close to where the loud, booming, yelling and screaming pool parties are held many days out of the week. After two days of little sleep, Edna at customer service was very kind and moved us to a much quieter area. But unfortunately when we went to this area we had housekeeping service only one day out of four, and that was because I once again walked the 15 minute walk with a foot injury to the main building to complain in person because calling the customer service the night before resulted in zero results. We were out of toilet paper, we were out of Kleenex , we needed clean towels and a broom to sweep the sandy floor but none of this came even after repeatedly calling them. Two days later the kind lady at customer service sent a supervisor to clean our room and then it was immaculate. The supervisor was promised to come back the next day but never did show again, sheesh . Therefore housekeeping is going to get a zero …. We actually seen a house keeping trolly elsewhere in our building and “stole” toilet paper and Kleenex for our room, that's just unacceptable!

As for the noise level, the booming from music and yelling and screaming from drunk teenagers/younger adults in the hallway and stairwells of both buildings was pathetic. And this went on till wee hours of the morning for the first two nights. This is definitely a resort for younger spring break type people, which is unfortunate because it's a beautiful resort with very clean swimming pools and beach area.

The food was under par in almost all of the restaurants as well, that was if you got in without waiting in a long line only to find out that you're putting your name down to come back in an hour, at least this was at the steakhouse which was the only one that served a la carte and was close to our building for supper. There was many many many unused sections/tables in the restaurant, just too understaffed to use them, therefore you were put on a waiting list. Most of the other buffets had bulk food that looked and tasted like bulk food, I was very disappointed and by the end of the week frustrated …. In addition because they stopped making fresh breakfast to refill the trays an hour before closing time, you just got crispy old stuff ( or stood in a very long line up where one chef could make you something fresh) [Details]

Our Riu Sante Fe Vacation

We had a not to bad experience at Riu Sante Fe. The hotel is clean and well maintained. The food was o.k. and not like other resorts we have stayed at. The staff was not as friendly as other resorts we stayed at as well. There was a lot of noise around the pools everyday. Other guests had their own music playing around the pools and made it sound like a circus at times. At night there was a lot of yelling and noise from other guests rooms until 2 or 3 in the morning. There were a lot of intoxicated guests that were loud and disrespectful around the main pool area. We would spend our time around the less noisy pool close to the main entrance. When we went to the Spa the Jacuzzis were cold and not heated. If I had young children with me I would not take them to this resort due to the high level of alchohol being present. The entertainmaint was not what we were used to at other resorts we stayed at. I don't think we would return to this particular resort anytime soon. [Details]

Covid-19 effects on resorts is real!

I have stayed at this resort multiple times over the years and it's always been a good experience. However, this last vacation showed me that supply chains have affected even resort destinations. The weak points
The quality of food and availability has decreased so significantly that I ate off the resort multiple times. Cleanliness is still quite high but the disrepair to infrastructure was shocking! Buildings, rooms and pools need better maintenance.
Sanitary measures
The resort respected Covid-10 restrictions. Face masks are required in all eating facilities e.g. restaurants. Walking around the resort you can go unmasked and in the outdoor bars too. There are PCR testing services available on the resort.

This is my second time to this resort for a one week stay and it was not the best experience. The room was okay, super out dated. Light bulbs were burnt out. The food was decent but was not hot and fresh and most times food stations were left empty.

The overall look of the resort was nice. The beach is full of people trying to sell you bracelets and goods but it got annoying. [Details]

Fun time - Not Greatest Amenities

We had fun with our friends at this resort however the rooms and food were not great.
We booked for our honeymoon and received a room with two seperate beds and no decor for the occasion.
Changed us to a room with a king on other side of resort from our party and gave us room keys that didn't work, safe didn't work and bugs on counters.
Being our honeymoon we thought there might be some nice towel art or something at minimum to mark the occasion.
The restaurants could not keep up with the food demand and bins were often empty for quite some time. There was enough variety if you are a picky eater to find something though. [Details]

The strong points
Foam party was super fun It was nice they played a movie in the lobby each night before the entertainment. Lots of pool options. We were able to get into any of the restaurants relatively easy.
The weak points
Food was often not replenished fast enough Bartenders could not keep up The only resteraunt that wasn't a buffet was the steak one. Rooms were not well kept (safes in multiple rooms were not working or damaged, bugs on counters, dirty towels)
Sanitary measures
The only time you were asked to wear a mask was in the restaurant when filling up plates. More seated dining and less buffets would be a helpful covid measure instead of the other way around. More hand sanitizer stations would also be welcomed.
