Wonderful beach, just what I needed

, Montréal, QC

Staff: we were very impressed with the staff. except for Jose at the coffee shop that always forgot our order and blamed it on other staff.

Food: The food was ok: we had fish, porc, squash, cabbage and carrots as well as the traditional omelettes and pasta. Go eat early if you want more choice.

Entertainment: The entertainment from the staff was good [Details]

The strong points
The landscape and cleanliness was remarkably great, I was very impressed compared to other more expensive resorts in Cuba. Beach: Absolutely amazing. the starfish location is the best spot on the beach. I appreciated also the presence of live-guard.
The weak points
-It is to be noted that half the resort is closed du to the hurricane. There is only one pool and no “mirror” resort. -Hot water and water pressure could be an issue on higher floors. I didn't mind too much but it's good to know.

Beautiful beach and... that's it.

We've been in that hotel few years ago. It was called Husa Cayo, different owner. And this was really 4.5 star hotel. Good food, very clean, lot of nice staff and guests. Now, I will give 2.5 star. Half of the old hotel is a ghost town, empty rooms in bungalows, you can see lots of garbage in the rooms. Terrible food, you can have slices of sausage for breakfast, same for lunch and you can see the same old sausage for dinner from breakfast, refreshed on the pan. When any meals was starting, all dinning room staff and waitresses was gathered at the entrance and applauding entering guests... it was shocking and confusing experience. Long lineups to cooks and food. Rooms and amenities needs general updates. Beach towels suppose to be navy blue, lots of them were discolored. Beach chairs broken, dirty and discolored. Many, many examples. Too many. Hallway fixtures in the bungalows rarely had protection glass. Beautiful beach. You can always find perfect spot for yourself. Paul [Details]

“Ok” resort depending on what you are looking for

, Cornwall, ON

We had a great deal with the “kids stay free” option. We are beach people and the beach was absolutely amazing. The rooms were really outdated and lots of broken stuff in it. However it was clean. Half the resort was shut down but unsure why as we didn't see or hear construction. The bridges to the beach were under construction, it will be better once this is completed. The food was what is expected from resorts in Cuba, however we had better. It was our first time in Cayo Santa Maria and we found the bus ride long to get to and from the airport. There is not a lot around to visit. Overall it was an ok resort if you are looking for cheap prices and the beach. Not a great choice if you are looking for night life and a bit of luxury. [Details]

Death Trap

Terrible food. Great beaches. Awesome staff but we are all covered in bug bites from mites in the beds.

My 4yr old found a random pill on the floor of our room after it had been cleaned????

Also saw a condom on the walkway. Gross. [Details]

Awesome!

The star fish tropical cayo Santa Maria was wonderful! The staff were very nice and helpful and most could speak pretty good English which was very helpful. The food and drinks were very good. They always were changing up at least a bit of the food so there was a good variety. The omelet bar they had every morning was amazing! They would make you whatever you wanted. The bars were very good. I found the pool bar the best for putting in just tge right amount of alcohol. They had a few drinks that they specialized in that were very good but they were very good about trying to make whatever you wanted. The rooms were very clean and the cleaning staff did a great job at keeping the room clean through out our week at the star fish. The pool was quite large with lots of chairs around it and cabanas over them. The pool temperature was perfect was well. It is a pretty big resort but nothing was too far of a walk and if it would be they had lots of golf carts to take you any where you wanted. One of the employees even took us for a ride down to the market which was wonderful. The beach was amazing! Very clean and always lots of chairs and life guards on staff that were very friendly. This resort was very good and made my vacation there very nice! I would recommend this resort to anyone and would definitely go back! [Details]

Fully Exceeded my Expectations

, Peterborough, ON
2018-04-09
I Work in the Travel Industry and went to Cuba with low expectations after reading reviews and hearing travel stories from various clients about Cuba. This vacation far exceeded my expectations.

Beach: 5*
The Beach was spectacular, it took my breath away Super soft powdery white sand and beautiful crystal clear water. You could walk out quite far before it became to deep to stand. The gentleman working on the beach will pull up a chair anywhere you want it and clear it all up for you.

Resort:
The resort is beautiful! it is also large so lots of walking to get from one end to the other. We were in Building 2 which was located further from the beach but very centrally located to the pool and main lobby areas. little tip, when using the toilet in your room be sure to press both buttons when flushing or the toilet will run, We figured this out on the second day after having it fixed twice and never had another problem with it. Rooms were cleaned daily and professionally!

Staff: 5*
Oh where to begin! we met so many wonderful people on this vacation and honestly you made our stay so much more memorable. A few Shoutouts... Pedro at the Buffet Restaurant by the Pool, Thank you for being so friendly and providing such great attentive service. We had a table waiting everyday at 1 pm with our drinks ready and you with a big smile that was fantastic!. Adrian... the Man who makes the BEST Mojitos at the starfish! Our housekeeper (I'm sorry I didn't get your name) Always had our room sparkling, even lining our shoes up nice and neat, and being very creative with the towel art! And last but not least our Nexus Tours Destination Rep. He did such a fantastic job of making sure we had everything we needed, that things were to our liking. And thank you for arranging a resort tour for me! As a Travel Agent it has come in handy while selling this property to my clients.

Food:
Pretty Standard for Cuba, I always found something to eat and never felt hungry. I would highly recommend the hot grills Made to order, Crepes/Omelettes for breakfast, Chicken for Lunch at the Pool Buffet, Pizza/Pasta at the dinner buffet. We tried the Italian A la Carte The Chicken Lasagna was really good, and the international a la carte again the Chicken was amazing and I left stuffed! I would advise you make your a la carte reservations when you arrive as they fill up very quickly. Also try the Cappuccinos from the lobby bar, excellent for an after dinner drink. [Details]
