The room was great! We asked for an upper room, because of the vaulted ceiling. We wished that the straw ceiling hadn't been draped by a sheer material, but at least it was still vaulted. The staff were all great and very accommodating. The king bed was very firm, but not uncomfortable, and the pillows were perfect for the bed. The linens were ironed and comfortable. The air conditioning worked perfectly. The room was spacious and well thought out. Each room has a deck, with deck chairs and a hammock. We wanted to play shuffle board one cloudy afternoon, but the supplies were lost and unavailable. The food selection was great at the buffets and there was something for everyone. One complaint for us was that the music at the activity pool was too loud. Even on the beach or at the other pool the noise was almost continuous in the afternoons. When walking along the beach to Playa del Carmen, we didn't hear any other resort's music like at Allegro. The walk to Playa del Carmen is not too far and there is also a nice market area just a few short blocks from the resort. [Details]

Allegro didn't disappoint

In general we liked our two weeks there. Beach was nice, pools clean (but not heated), food was tasty and varied (Christmas Eve buffet was outstanding), all staff was friendly and we enjoyed eavning entertainment. [Details]

Awesome value

My parents, my 7 year old daughter and myself stayed at this resort the last week of June 2018. It was my 3rd time in Playacar and 2nd time at the Allegro (July 2017). We all had a great time. The value this resort offers for a very reasonable price is incredible.
The nicest asset of this lovely resort is by far its staff. I was pleasantly surprised to recognize a lot of staff members from last year. Most employees we met were going above and beyond their job requirements, notably the waiters Isaac Ortega (just awesome personality and attitude), Lindberg Castellanos (magic tricks my daughter is still talking about!), Ricardo Martinez who speaks great French, Moises Lopez, Sarai Barrios, Bernardo Balam, Jose Chi, Rigoberto Lopez, Alberto Mayo, Victor Catzin, Alexandro Mis, Rutbely Perez, Fernanda Cordova, Erika Ramirez, Mr. Humberto, bellissimo main restaurant manager Mr. Rafael and property manager Mr. Francisco, all housekeepers I met, and countless other staff members. Management: please hang on to your precious staff members, they are the ones making your lovely resort even nicer to stay at!
The food was great, plenty of choice for all tastes, pretty presentation daily, great spicy sauce bar to add some fire, a different theme every night, plenty of nice fresh fruit, lovely desserts. Drinks were good, not too strong, and made with real label alcohol.
The beach is gorgeous, plenty of loungers at all times of the day, nice coconut trees for shade, no big waves so this is perfect with young children. There was seaweed this time, but this is a natural phenomenon affecting all the Caribbean these years, and two men were working all day to try to keep up with it.
Accommodation is nice: lovely palapa rooftop, room size is ok, nice balcony and hammock, all clean and relatively new.
Resort grounds: lovely landscaping, plenty of flowers, blooming trees, palm trees, well-kept grounds. The layout of the units is nicely done and we do not feel like there are 300 rooms in this resort. There are tons of birds, cute agoutis, a few iguanas, my daughter loved it all. This resort is just the right size, location is perfect on the beach and near the town, but far enough not to hear the ferry to Cozumel, which runs many times both day and night.
The crowd was a nice mix of Europeans, Argentinians, Mexicans, few Americans, and the odd Canadians.
Regarding the selling of memberships and visits to the other resort: yes, there is staff trying to sell you these visits, but after refusing politely, I was not asked any further. It is normal for resorts to promote their services. The lovely lady to whom we talked initially was very friendly all along and even came to say goodbye when we were leaving.
Overall: we will go back for sure! [Details]

Enjoy life, that is the motto at Allegro Playacar..........I've travelled to many resorts and all inclusive situations and know how they work.............not my first rodeo you might say. In October of 2016 I stayed at the resort next to this one (Azteca) while construction was going on, so never paid much attention to this resort, except for the tap tap tapping.......When pricing my March vacation, I found this resort to be over $1,000 cheaper for my 11 nites, so I decided since it was right next door, I'd give it a try.......And, boy, am I glad I did....
First off, I can say I've never seen a friendlier staff.......In our 11 days there, there was never a grumble, or an unhappy face...........From the waiter Isaac to my maid Martha to the Guest Services members Gabriela and Diego, I was always met with a smile, no matter how ridiculous my request...........This is an amazing group of people, top notch, A 1............and you don't find this just anywhere, a magical group of employees who go above and beyond to make a holiday special.....
I'll briefly mention a couple of "cons" so you won't think I'm a plant paid by the hotel to write this review.........Yes, the double beds are hard, and I was given a duvet which I put on the bottom and I slept on that with sheet and blanket on top of me........Problem solved.............That was easy...........Other thing..........They charge for wifi, either $12 US a day ,or $45 US a week.....I object to that after paying over $3,000 for my vacation but it's free across the street at Starbucks, takes 2 minutes to get there, or in town at La Taverna on 10th Avenue, 16 pesos for 1 hour, can't beat that, and you can always use the walk after all the awesome food..........And, I think that charging for wifi is likely the way of the future, so I'd best get used to it....
Those are my negatives, now back to the positives, where shall I begin? It's all positive. I especially like the towel service, they just give you one and trade as you need them............Best I've seen, no card or deposit required, too easy, major bonus points here..... It was my b'day during my stay. I found an awesome banner outside my door and inside my room was decorated with a towel cake, 12 balloons, and flowers, how special was that? At brekkie and at dinner that nite, I had a special dessert and Happy Birthday was sung. They made me feel special every day, but on this day, I felt super special.......amazing people...........Food? When I hear people criticizing the food or saying it's just okay, I know I'm in a different resort than them....I don't get it. What are these people eating at home? They have everything? Don't see bacon, ask your server and it will appear,it's always in the kitchen! Mango, papaya, apples, bananas, all meats and cheeses , veggies and more, it's all there. ...............Try the coconut icecream, can't find it, ask Lenny what nite it's out, she is so lovely and helpful in the dining room............Loved all 3 of the a la cartes, but think I liked the Mexican one best because it's at the pool bar and has open windows to outside (also near my room)........The Oriental is amazing, wonderful sushi bar for an appetizer! For beverages, try a FIONA, it's my alcoholic beverage of choice there, looking forward to my next one.
Activites, tons to do, if you can't find anything, I would worry........Zumba, Bingo, evening shows (enjoyed Michael Jackson, Mexican and the Mayan show), even a mechanical bull............so much I can't begin to list it all....
I haven't seen anyone mention here about the books, but they have books to borrow and read by the towel change, so if you don't have room to take any in your suitcase, don't worry, they are there for you, in many languages.
Who are the guests? A great group where everyone gets along.............I'd say the largest percentage are Italian, closely followed by Canadians,then Americans, with a contingent of Argentinians,Chileans, Germans, people from the UK and more..........All lovely people........No one was offensive in any way, shape, or form....
Another plus here is the location, located in Playacar in a gated community, a great feeling of safety...Also, I felt very safe on 5th Avenue, or anywhere around Playa.. The distance to 5th Avenue is about a 20 minute walk, same to walk up the beach to take the ferry to Cozumel, a great way to spend a few hours, and a cheap ferry ride too!
There is one other thing I wish to mention.........if you are a dog lover as we are......There is a rescue in Playa called PLAYA ANIMAL Rescue and if you google them, you see they have a Saturday morning Charm School.........We took a taxi to the MEGA store and pickup is at 9am, and they take you to shelter to walk/help socialize the dogs.....I take treats from Canada and they love them. It's free entertainment, and it's been a highlight for me both times I visited Mexico............If you are interested, please check their FB page, it's a morning you won't soon forget.......
Overall, and the bottom line after the above ramblings, I love this resort. My travelling companion and I are already planning to return same time next year, and I hope to celebrate again on my next bday there......Today, I spent $100 on 2 new bathing suits for next time.........I'll be counting the days till I get a chance to wear them there........In closing, it's pretty simple............give this resort a try, and .......enjoy life ! Terrible Rooms and unsanitary conditions

Rooms are terrible and haven't been updated OR maintained since they were built decades ago. They don't use a dish washer for the drink glasses at the beach bar...just swish them in murky water and fill your drink..glasses are noticeable filthy. We saw waiters drop forks and other cutlery and just pick it up and put it back on the table. Cockroaches in room, leaks in roof and plumbing, safe didn't work...the list goes on and on. Barcelo has bought them out...should be a great improvement. Beach is awesome and so is location. They didn't use a measuring tape when they built any of the stairs to the second floor rooms. All uneven steps and on an angle. Lots of people with casts and crutches...wonder why. [Details]

The weak points
The rooms should be totally demolished and rebuilt by carpenters with a ticket and a measuring tape. Ticketed plumbers should be hired too along with roofers. Dishwashers should be put in so the glasses can be washed and not swished in a Rubbermaid tub.

Allegro Playacar Beach Club

This hotel is adequate but quite average. It is a older hotel and that was evident. Our check in was a bit of a gong show but the problem was straightened out rather quickly and the rest of the week was fine. We did notice a cockroach in our room on the last night. Also, we did not get a bathtub which was promised in our package. We also were told not to shut off the air conditioning as it cause a water leak in the ceiling ??? For the price it was less than we had hoped for. [Details]

Just don't

We arrived at the hotel and the room we were supposed to get( King Bed) was already booked as the hotel had overbooked, they offered us the last a room in the back corner ( Two Doubles Cemented to the wall) full of black mold, this to anyone is unacceptable. They did try to clean it by throwing bleach everywhere with made it even worse, having asthma it's wasn't an option. No options were given by the hotel, they thought mold wasn't an issue, There was no mention of a sister resort next door as an option We had to walk down the road at 2 a.m with our luggage to try to find a place to sleep for the night. The closest resort was RUi Palace Mexico, where the front desk was very helpful in trying to find a cheaper room , to no avail we ended up paying OUT OF POCKET $614.23 for a 6 hour stay.

We met with the Hotel Manager, we were told we would be getting a refund but not reimbursed for the out of pocket expense we had Still Waiting no choice but to pay , we did not feel comfortable as Canadians to sleep on the streets in Mexico. There are ZERO unmotorized water sports , no paddle boats no kyacking, snorkeling or catamaran like your website indicated. There was no bar filled every two days, can of Pepsi and 2 cans of bear is not a bar. We had to buy a bottle of wine as that is all I drink it cost us $48.00 canadian, which we did not enjoy due to the maid breaking the bottle the next morning. International drinks were also not included, had to go buy my own alcohol and Ginger ale.

It gets better, the room was something out of a horror show, the toilet was broken , numerous attempts to try to get it fixed went ignored. We had to lift the lid every time we wanted to flush, blood splatter on the walls and a musky damp smell, our clothes were damp we had not even taken out of our suitcases. I cried more on this trip than laughed. We were told this was a nicer room upgrade? We were also told if we didn't tell the other guests of our terrible experiences we would be upgraded to CLub status, free surf and turf dinner on the beach , and a free 25 minute massage, we declined as we tried the Al a cart restaurant and had their steak, it was an uneatable piece of salty meat, even to my husband who eats anything. and didn't want a massage. The food was terrible if you were hungry late night they only offered tacos I wouldn't feed my dog, no fruit, no chips , anything, you had to wait until breakfast at 7:30.

I have never seen such terrible customer service, nobody smiled, front desk was rude and we were initially greeted with a cold mean stare. There was one server who was the only one with a smile Fidel, if you are stubborn and ignore the bad reviews, he is the person to ask about anything.There were several people complaining at front desk about rooms, plumbing etc.. Flooding was everywhere. We are two hard working Canadians who saved for this trip from hell, $2390.00 is a lot of money to us

I have stayed in the riviera Mayan 3 times before never had a problem, first time at thiis hotel you couldn't pay me to stay there again. We saw water leaking from the lights, flooded dining room, what a hazard, how you can sell this as a 4 star hotel is a disgrace, or take people's money for this place isn't right. I don't know where the people stayed that thought it was amazing , not at the Allegro. Perhaps bribing other guests like ourselves with upgrades up the wazoo helps with great ratings, not us. This hotel was a disgrace and you at Allegro know it. Don't forget to tip the servers , it's not their fault this place is a bait and switch [Details]

Our Christmas vacation at Allegro Playacar Resort

This resort is a small intimate resort, very easy to get around, Grounds are well maintained, The staff were ALL very friendly & always greeted us. However, I would only class this as a 3 1/2 star,as the rooms are very small & in need of updating. there was no dresser to put our closes away in only 3 shelves in the closet area, the lighting was bad especially over the bathroom sink which made it hard to shave & put on makeup. no kleenex in the rooms, Checkin was very fast & effiecent, food was good except that alot of it was not very warm from the buffet. Beautiful beach but the water was rough as I had expected, very securer area, no worries walking outside of the resort, therte is a small shopping area outside to left the a short distance & a small avairy to the right, Also to the right you can easily walk about 20 minutes into Playa Del Carmen. Resort was 99% Europeans, not a lot of Canadians. [Details]

Relaxing Getaway

Myself and my gal were extremely happy with our stay.We have been to Mexico 4 times at 4 different places and the Allegro is the one we would most want to return to. I found the food excellent ,better than 5 star resorts I'e seen. All the staff were genuinely friendly and would go out of their way to help you out. Each room was a corner of a smallish building 4 rooms per floor ,with a hammock on your balcony ,very clean and cleaned every day by thoughtful maids.
it was quiet with well behaved guests,not the place if you want to party. The beach and the grounds were great and clean. Wifi would be $10 per day but there is a Starbucks nearby where you can get it free.
We would certainly return to the Allegro resort! [Details]

Some fun in the sun

This is the 1st resort that we stayed at in mexico that did not have access to the internet that guests had access to at no charge- there was a charge to use wifi ( you could go down the street and go to Starbucks ( buy a coffee and use for free). It is also the 1st resort that charged for the use of the safe. The room always smelled gross in the morning ( like sewer gases. There was not a dresser in the room- so for anything that you could not hang- you were living out of the suit case ( Also the 1st resort that we stayed at in Mexico that did not have at least one dresser in the room. We have been to different places in Mexico 7 times. [Details]

Not a four star

I did not enjoy my stay. It is too noisy. The maids are very good, the food is very good and it is about 30 minutes walk to Playa del Carmen.

There is too much noise. Birds wake you up at 6:15 a.m.

Concierge people who sells time shares or similar really pesters you and phones and wake you up.

The most unpleasant was having no host helping you find a table at night. He just walks around looking at the hard workers and he does not help at all. Very pathetic. It was always a panic every evening. [Details]

The Staff is the Best Ever

The hotel is efficient and well laid out with a wonderful buffet at one end and a great beach at the other. Between are some lovely pools and efficient rooms with lovely porches giving the feeling of being in a neighborhood of tourists. The staff is smiling and happy and goes that extra mile to make sure your stay is great. From Alex & Jacobo at breakfast to Victor who cleaned our room so perfectly and made us great towel sculptures to Lucio at the Amber Bar at night, the staff made sure our visit was one to remember. When we left, it was like leaving family and we are anxious to go back. The beach is lovely, the sand so nice and the water so calm and clear....this was a vacation to remember. [Details]

I would say the resort is 3.5 to 4 star. It was simple but very clean and well established. The staff were excellent and the food was probably the best of any All inclusive I have stayed at but I am used to 3 star.The one thing I did not like was the incessant hounding by the Vacation club (timeshare) sales people located at a booth right by the main Restaurant buffet of the resort.By the way if you are a three star traveler from Canada, the timeshare is probably not for you. What a great time, loved this resort!!

My husband and I just loved this resort! Great price for a 4 star right in the Playacar. I had contacted one of the customer service reps named Julieta prior to our stay and she provided us with the best room ever, so close to the beach. It was amazing, thanks again Julieta.

We are both scuba divers so this location was fabulous as we were only a short walk into Playa to dive with Tank Ha. We saved approx $160 a day diving with them vice the dive companies located near the resort. All dives were wonderful.

This resort has beautiful clean rooms, for the beds if you find them too hard just ask for a topper and it will make all the difference.

The food and service are second to none. We have stayed in many resorts 4 and 5 stars over the last 14 years here in Mexico and the food and service is just as good as the 5 stars. The nightly buffets were so good we never make it to the restaurants.

From arrival to departure the staff treat you like VIP's. We were treated with a tasty platter of fruit on our arrival in our room and had chocolate covered strawberries delivered to our room on our last night. Such a nice surprise. Thank you Allegro for that.

We found the nightly entertainment to be very good and well as the activities around the pool during the day.

If we weren't scuba diving were spent much time walking around the golf course in the Playacar or on the beach into Playa del Carmen. So very safe so no issues there.

We have read some negative reviews on this resort which I'm surprised. I feel that people want to pay for a 4 star but want a higher level resort. If they feel that way then they need to go pay $4000 a week somewhere else then they'll realize that Allegro is a true 4 star with a very low price. So, no reason to complain.

There are many great resorts in Mexico but this is definitely one of them. Give it a try as I know you'll love it! [Details]
