The strong points
Staff were amazing. Especially Cecelia and Erik from the Entertainment team, Christopher at the front desk and Juan who assisted us with the issues in our room.
The weak points
The beach was good, but very rocky in the water. If you are someone who wants to enjoy the beach and ocean swimming, this is not the place for you

WOW! The first time in Mexico and the first time at a Bahai Principe resort and I must say it was amazing. The selection of different types of food for the meals was amazing. The staff was amazing and all staff at key points spoke excellent English. The grounds were simply exquisite. Our room was updated and always refreshed every day. They went all out for Valentines making the evening buffet very unique. The restaurants that we booked were great as well. Our favorite was Dolce Vita (Italian, manager Tanya). If your addicted to desserts, this might be a difficult place to go as their dessert selection, especially at night, was crazy. The trolly system they have running there to get to the other hotels was well run and always on time. All and all, when I go to some place new, I always ask myself this question, would I come back? The answer is "hell yea"! We simply loved it, the staff, the resort, the amazing food and selection of the food. The entertainment at night was good too. No place is 100% perfect but to us, they were too insignificant to mention, and we have sent in a complaint to Mother Nature for the one day of rain that she gave us (out of 14 days).

Food selection excellent, trolly system excellent, Staff excellent. A server in the buffet area for breakfast and lunch who was amazing is Feliciano and on the entertainment staff Cecilia who went above and beyond to make our stay more fun.
The weak points
Although airport advertised as being 1 hour and 19 mins away, bus ride took 2 hours as Akumal was the last stop of 4. Also on way back to airport it was a 2 hour 9 mins trip.

Well established hotel that's been renovated in deluxe room categories and most common areas. Experienced staff that are very friendly and welcoming.
Guests have access to 3 other sections connected by trolley making this a very large resort with lots of choices. Overall food quality is good and the buffet manager really takes pride in presentation. The resort is very clean. The beaches have protected areas from the surf and segregated areas for guest depending on their base location booked. Water shoes are a must. Lots of Palapas. The main pool area has elevated flower beds but lacks any flowers other than trees and shrubs although the grounds are well maintained. The negatives: lacking access for persons with mobility issues. no elevators, limited ramps,
no poolside washrooms without stairs. Everything requires app based reservations, a la cart restaurants book solid 10 days prior to arrival and group dinning is difficult. Two Evening shows per week require app based reservations and cost $25 cdn/person. The shows are better than similar resorts in the area. The animation staff are very good and professional.
Late night adult activities are limited to the sports bar or to travelling to another section of the complex. The Akumal section is beachfront and has more inclusions for adults. Coba and Tulum suite families, Sian Kan for golfers and jungle backgrounds. Wifi is spotty and non tech savvy people will be frustrated with the app, cell phone wizards only. (who wants to be on their phone on vacation?) Many excursions available to choose from. The staff make the experience positive with their hospitality. [Details]

I wasn't thrilled!

, Richmond, BC

overall facility was nice. Very open & spacious. very happy that there was a pickleball court. The coffee shop was the best for light snacks & drinks. Takalito was great for light lunch & afternoon snacks. specialty restaurants had nice food choices, however was not impressed that you could only order one appetizer, one entree and one dessert. I loved the Kay Beach Club for its ambiance & swings.
i was not impressed with the staff at all. no one went above and beyond their job. no smiles - they were NOT FRIENDLY, in fact, in some of the specialty restaurants, some of the servers seemed quite miserable. our best server was at the Mashua Nikkei restaurant, he was probably the most friendly & best attitude.
our room appeared to have bed bugs & i asked to switch to another room. guest services just ignored my request & said that they will have our room fumigated. for 2 nights, we were bitten alive with whatever bug was in our room. i asked on the 2nd day to switch rooms, again my request was ignored (that is 2 separate guest relations people that did this) and again they said they will fumigate our room. it didn't even seem like anyone came to do it.
in other all inclusive resorts that I've been to had drink servers all around the pool area. I did not see ONE PERSON come around for us to order drinks. it's either you go to the outdoor bar or the swim up bar. also some of the bartenders did not even know how to make some of the drinks i asked for.
we went on the bike tour around the whole resort (unfortunately I cant remember our guide's name) which was a lot of fun.
i could go on, but not worth my time to writing about other things that i was not happy with. I won't be back to this resort. [Details]

Amazing resort

We absolutely loved this resort. We stayed in the same building as the swim outs, and the rooms were gorgeous. The layout of the resort is amazing, and the food in the buffet is great. We spent most of our time in the adults only pool and ocean area, which was absolutely gorgeous with the perfect amount of relax and fun. The workers are all very helpful and friendly, and you get access to the other resorts within Bahia so you have plenty to explore. The wifi also worked throughout the whole resort which was a bonus. We would definitely return to this resort if we go back to Mexico. [Details]

Beautiful resort, a few hiccups

Wonderful, beautiful resort, staff are great. Paloma from guest services was absolutely the greatest in helping with a minor health issue - she definitely went above and beyond!!
The few hiccups we had were adressed somewhat quickly but we feel we lost about 24 hrs of vacation time because of them - our key card didn't work on arrival, towels were a problem as somedays we didn't have any hand or face towels or the next day we had only one bath towel, issues with the AC, it was 32 degrees in the room on arrival, mini fridge didn't work so they finally replaced it, limited reservations for restaurants but Guest services were great squeezing us in. Amazing experience

, Stittsville, ON
2024-01-02
We absolutely loved this resort, from the food, to the beach and pools, entertainment, and facilities. The only thing we would complain about is the room service (we often got our towels taken away but not replaced), and the fact that on our departure day we had to leave the resort 6 hours before our flight so the trip was cut shorter. Otherwise, the experience was amazing. We would come here again, and specifically to the Akumal resort after having seen and eaten at all the other ones that were part of Bahia Principe in Riviera Maya. Great for kids too! There is a scuba shop by the main pool, they have excursions too (other than scuba) and cheaper and more options than what the people by the front desk sell you. We sadly went with the excursion desk at the front and paid the same price for less compared to what the scuba shop was offering. Lots of activities to join throughout the day too. And lots of A la carte to choose from, but make sure you book those on the same day you arrive because they are hard to come by. Great and kind staff, very clean! And they have an app to help you too! [Details]

Extremely disappointed

, Sherwood Park , AB
2023-05-01
We had not had a vacation in 4yrs and were so looking forward to an amazing experience as we had heard that this resort was amazing. Our stay was horrible from the first day, to the very last. We were to be housed in the
adult building and same with our adult daughters. Reception assured us they would be in the same building. They weren't. At 11:30pm at night, we were having to recheck them into our building. (which was not the adult building we were told we'd all be in).
The amenities in our shower were not stocked before our initial arrival. We had no conditioner, a small amount of soap, shampoo and body cream. No Kleenex and minimal toilet paper. It took 3 days, many promises to fix and involvement of managers to get it straightened out. In both rooms, our toilets would not flush properly, so my husband was trying to adjust the toilets as we were also having to fill the ice bucket to get the toilets to flush. Our daughters had the same problem. This also took 3 days, promises to rectify and managers to finally fix. Our shower was consistently cold. Finally, again of 3 days of getting angry with front desk, concierge, and managers....a maintenance man turned up the flame on the water heater. The maids couldn't be bothered to rinse out our coffee pot, or restock the sugar (I was having to take from the buffet). There were 2 of us in the room but consistently only 1 coffee cup was left.
Running out of toilet paper was consistent and our daughter was coming to our room to get more. We spared what little we had to give her. The blow dryer supplied in her room, did not work.
One day the maids did not leave us enough towels...another, no face cloths.
The staff barely made eye contact with any of the tourists. Barely acknowledged the presence of tourists or even said "hola".
Service in the buffet was horrible. 20 mins to get coffee and then had to chase down waiters to find out why I hadn't received my juice yet! This was a daily occurrence.
The staff took our umbrella at the pool while we were in the pool and gave to someone else...so I had to get angry to finally get another one.
The beach and pool bars were hit and miss to even have a blender for slushy drinks. Seriously!
The pool cabana was littered with cigarette butts and food that had been left there for hours. We asked staff to clean it up for us so we could lay there. It took 2hrs of us asking staff and a restaurant manager (and told every time that someone would be right there to clean it up). The couple next to us said they had been trying for 3 hrs to get it cleaned.
My husband finally cleaned it himself!
Not once were we offered to be moved to a different hotel room.
We were offered $150 in the gift shop. We told them that this was an insult for a vacation that cost us $10,000 (Canadian).
Their next offer was $200 in the gift shop, or dinner on the beach $100 (it's so windy at night that no one is on the beach) or an appointment at the spa $180. Are you kidding me? For all the consistent inconvenience day after day?
We did not accept considering the amount of money we spent for our vacation. What they offered was completely insulting!
On day of leaving, it took us 3hrs to get to the airport. We paid $55 to upgrade our seats because apparently eventhough our tickets were bought together, my husband and I were not seated together initially. So we had to upgrade to be able to sit together. Well let me tell you what an upgraded seat gets you.....
seats that don't recline on a 6hr flight (we were not in the emergency exit) and a tv that doesn't work!
There is more that happened...but I will refrain from saying. We are still upset and angry!!! [Details]

A disappointing experience

, North York, ON
2023-03-08
Disappointment to say the least for a “5-star luxury resort”.
The mini bar was never restocked unless specifically requested.
The rooms were outdated.
The power went out one late afternoon.
The water was not working one morning.
One request to restock our “coffee bar” in the afternoon took 90 minutes to fulfill.
The beaches in Mexico in general aren't great and this was no exception - lots of seaweed, rock and smell.
These all seem small and petty but generally never happen in a 5-star luxury resort.
I don't think I would come here again. [Details]

It was our first time travelling with my wife. I was so scared because all my co-workers in Canada said Mexico was a dangerous country. It went upside down after experiencing it. All the people are nice and we had a problem with the actual tourist people! You can see the genuine kindness of the people working in Bahia Principe, and they treat us like a king and queen! Such a lovely experience, and please, Canadians, do not be scared of Mexico. I've met people who speak English to nothing where we only communicate with body language. They still do help to the best of their ability. They are helpful, genuine, and legit people. Treat them nice and it will come back to you 100% guaranteed! [Details]

Accessible and friendly

, Troy, ON
2022-05-14
I went to Luxury Akumal looking for accessibility (ramps, service, accommodations). They put us in first floor room in a building with a ramp, our room was right by it. The mobility scooter fit and there was more than enough space as well to maneuver it inside. We paid for a higher rate room so we were put in adults only section. First floor rooms everywhere are accessible. I asked for a bath chair and they provided one as well. The ramps are all over the hotel although not visibly marked, they are a bit steep so one has to go down slowly or up at full speed, I recommend going with someone able to help just in case, although staff were happy to help anytime. Guest services was in charge of rides for us and they were excellent. Guest services/used for be butler service said they have a special wheelchair to bring people inside of the ocean which I think it's amazing ! We didn't need it but I know many people who would benefit from this.

The hotel also caters to different diets and food allergies, we told the guest services and they gave us a letter to give to the waiters and they got the chef at every meal to let us know what was safe to eat or offered to make us something separate. Just make sure to double check your food as there is always human error.
They had gluten free food corner (called low gluten) and the vegetarian corned also had gluten free items. The waitstaff was wonderful and very attentive as well. I'm very pleased sure the hotel and its services. [Details]

First I will say this was my 11 trip to the Bahi principe group of resorts in the Mayan. Despite the COVID issues the resort was pretty open with protocols in place to keep guests safe. Masking was required in certain areas along with a glove requirement in the buffets.
Our rooms lacked small extras that are usually available, no small bottles of alcohol in fridge but beer and pop , no reason.
My biggest complaint was the people next door and the excessive noise early morning for four days in a row. Our calls to the front desk did nothing to deter them. After fours days we were ready to insist they either remove them or relocate us to another room. Efforts from the resort fell on deaf ears. After four days their vacation was over. But it is apparent that the resort has little or no desire to take action.
The resort is great and otherwise we enjoyed our stay. Food excellent, rooms comfortable and activities great. [Details]

Vacation ends in horrifying tragedy

, Nepean, ON
2022-02-16
We stayed at the Bahia Principe Luxury Akumal resort. The first few days were relaxing. That all suddenly ended when I was exiting my shower and the hinge of the glass door gave way and the door shattered, showering me with broken glass shards. I suffered dozens of bloody cuts all over my body from the shoulders down and one very deep slice on my ankle. So much blood and glass everywhere! The ordeal was terrifying, painful and traumatising, and entirely caused by the glass shower door dangerously failing during normal use. The resort did almost nothing to help or compensate me. They sent a first-aider, who admitted I needed stitches, but they did not want me to see the onsite doctor. I was not given a wheelchair, crutches, cane or any personal walking assistance. I was barely able to walk for several days and I was still bleeding and limping painfully for the remainder of my stay and in considerable pain which I had to treat with pain killers and bandages at my own expense. I could not go in the pool or ocean or engage in any of the resort activities I had travelled there to enjoy. During the following week I repeatedly tried to talk to management and see a doctor, all of which they refused and ignored. I was told I would have to take it up with the resort company's customer service department when I got home. I have done this, but they have ignored all my efforts to contact them. No response at all.

The Bahia Akumal was very nice. It was a huge complex of 4 hotels all of
which we were able to visit as we were staying in the Akumal. The trolly transit system was very efficient. The beach was long and wide-great for long walks. Lots of pools throughout the property along with palapas, sun beds and tents. The restaurants were really nice with a good variety of food. The staff were always friendly and helpful. The bed was extremely comfortable with a huge pillow top mattress. [Details]

This resort is very picturesque. Beautiful landscape and pools. Good variety of nightly entertainment throughout the resort complex. Grab a tram and go wherever you want. Loved the wildlife. Lots of iguanas. The rooms are a nice size. We were in 8222 adult only building facing the ocean. Best view. Beautiful sunrise while having coffee on balcony each morning. Mostly ate at the buffets throughout the resort complex. Food choices were good, but were lacking vegan options. Couldn't find a veggie burger anywhere. Staff were very friendly and eager to please. Staying at this resort got you into Coba, Tulum and Si an kaan. The lobby at Coba was very enjoyable because of the bar and live entertainment there nightly. Overall a great place to stay. [Details]

The strong points
Very beautiful resort. Immaculate grounds. Trams always available to take you back to your room or to the other hotels within the complex. Great friendly staff.
The weak points
Not enough variety of vegan/vegetarian food available. Items at buffet labeled vegan but had cheese, meat or fish in them. Vegan means no animal products used.

Bahia Principe Akumal

, Montréal, QC

We visited the Bahia Principe resorts in Mexico so many times we stopped counting. Our first visit dates from the days when the Tulum hotel was the only one built. We visited the Akumal hotel during the first years of operation, same for the Coba. We loved this resort so much we didn't hesitate to plan our wedding in the Akumal section with family and friends… We were so happy to come back this summer to the Akumal hotel with the kids to spend quality family time as well as to refresh their memories, despite the high cost of a luxury resort (Don Pablo Collection).
However, it will be our last visit. We can't accept the position of the resort and his shareholder Pinero Group. It's now day 5. There were virtually no shady spots. The main pool (around 300 sunbeds) has only 15 umbrellas. People get up at the crack of dawn and run literally down to the pool to reserve sun beds with towels. Every morning (starting 6 Am), the guests are disputing the few parasols available. We tried without a parasol but the kids suffered burns. We now have to wait until late afternoon or to use the other pools of the resort (parasols at Tulum hotel are fixed in the ground).
We contacted the customer services, the manager and the director of the hotel. They all confirmed the situation and can't improve it. The umbrellas are on order since April and must come from Spain!!! Strange… It seems they use the same excuse (lack of umbrellas due to a storm) for months… Any decent true 5* hotel would have an umbrella for every 2 sun loungers. This is an easy fix.
The Pinero group saves money on the backs of the customers. Their advertising motto is “we are family”. Sorry guys don't be my family if you don't care about my kids' wellness. We now sadly realize that Pinero Group's primary purpose is to cut costs at the expense of customers.
If you have been in the same situation, please make some noise. They have the feeling of being untouchable. [Details]
