Surprising - not what I expected

, Amherstburg, ON
2026-03-28
To be honest my expectations going to this resort were VERY low. When I originally started looking at resorts Splash was at the top of my list, then I started reading reviews, and reading more reviews, nothing good or above 2-3 stars. From there I took it right off my list and started looking else where. Due to the timing of our planning, traveling as a family of 7 with a minor and time of year we were travelling, our options were getting slim. So on a family members opinion my parents decided this is going to be our choice, I was not happy about it, but was out numbered, if it was as bad as I expected, it wasn't going to be my fault. We arrived and first impressions, i was impressed! Beautiful, bright, open & spotless lobby. Bell hops everywhere were right there as we got off our bus ready to help us navigate to the proper place for us to check in. We upgraded to diamond and it was SO well worth it, not a ton of extras, but enough that it just took our stay to the next level. There is a private lounge where we waited our turn to check in. The lounge itself had a small buffet with snacks, a bar and lots of comfy seating. Check in was quick and simple, then we waited for our butler to take us to our room. Now this is probably the only REAL NEGATIVE to our stay, we were approached while waiting by Alexandria, who started showing us all these specials and coupons available to us being diamond members for our stay. We told her there were a few we might be interested in but had to consult with the rest of our group who were arriving later. She then kept pushing, even after being told MANY times we were not committing to anything at this time. She ended up booking us a "complimentary" breakfast with her the next morning. At that point is when we realized that those were not coupons for us to use, they were a way to entice us to go to this breakfast, then you would be their stuck sitting through the sales pitch for you to sign up with them, THEN you would get the coupons. To top it off, that night when we got to our room, she had a bottle of sparkling wine and a reservation reminder with the WRONG names on it! Did not leave a good taste in our mouth, felt super slimy, made us really uncomfortable and question our choice of resorts. Be upfront, let us make the decision, if we are interested, let us seek you out, don't try and trick your guests. At this point our butler Alonso saved us! He took us to our room, showed us around, went over all the amenities we had available to us, and helped us get set up with the app we needed to keep in contact with him. He also informed us that we would have a 2nd butler on hand when he was not working. That was Christian. We have stayed at other 5 star luxury resorts and hands down the service we received from these 2 men was ABOVE & BEYOND anything we have ever received before! They checked in with us every time their shift changed, visited us every day at the pool, but were never overbearing or pushy. They were polite, very professional, yet at the same time very personable and times down right funny. They were the absolute cherry on top of our holiday. Any question we asked, issue that came up or request we made was dealt with asap, no questions asked. As far as the rest of our stay - everything, our room, pool area, poolside bars, the grounds themselves, staff, restaurants & food were top notch. The sales people who go around asking about you about the spa & excursions were respectful, if you said no, they moved on, they did not push or try and change your mind. Like other resorts, especially if traveling in a larger group, reserving your dinner reservation times is a must, but if you don't their buffet restaurant is massive with tons of options for pretty much any ones tastes or food restrictions. Side notes - the mini fridge/snacks in your room - are disappointing - there is no microwave, fridge is restocked daily with drinks, but if you are looking for snacks like at other resorts, they give you a tiny box of a few options & once they are gone, they do not restock those - so if you are craving chips or things of the sort - bring your own, or you are paying a fortune for the ones at their store! - AVOID the Cave restaurant - its unique inside - but food is bland and what you are think you are ordering is not actually we you get, sometimes not even close to what you thought you were getting - we left hungry, very confused and disappointed. - lunch time can get a little crazy - especially if its rainy! We were there over march break - so we expected things to be busy then normal, but one day of rain and they were not prepared! Restaurants that served lunch had line ups that were beyond excessive, including the food trucks. The take out pizza place ran out of dough & pepperoni - and they still had a line up that snaked around a large area. Room service had a wait time of 2-3 hours and even the cafe ran out of cream and some other items. That day there were A LOT of very hangery people walking around super frustrated. - we were travelling during march break so we expected it to be busier than normal, but it did seem like in the diamond section they may have over booked - but still not to the point that it put a damper on our stay. - the play center where the arcade/laser tag/arcade looked really fun - we never made it there. - the waterslides are huge and look really fun for those into that - again I an not so I just appreciated the enormity of them - splash pad area - really big and spacious, everyone enjoying it seemed to be having a blast - there is no shortage of nightly entertainment - hours of different shows or events - lots of fun for everyone of all ages & for the adult night owls, the Cave had a disco that started at 10:30pm All in all these are the stand out points good and bad - I could probably go on but the take away is this. THIS RESORT IS AMAZING! As a collective family there is no question we will return & depending when, we would definitely try and request Alonso & Christian to be our butlers. [Details]

The strong points
The staff, especially our butlers (Alonso & Christian) & pool servers! They went above and beyond any resort we have stayed at!
The weak points
Complimentary breakfast - not up front about what the breakfast is actually for. Its a time share pitch. The reps are WAY WAY to pushy, are miss leading and not a good 1st impression. - beverages are restocked in mini fridge daily but NOT the snacks
Sanitary measures
This place is clean! The staff is on top of keeping it neat and tidy, to the point saw a paper towel dispenser taken apart to clean

When we first arrived at 10pm, it was hard to get a scope on things. The buffet was shutting down, and the kids were hungry. We made great use of the 24 hour room service all week. Check in and check out takes a LONG time, and we were charged twice for an excursion, which im still waiting for a refund for. Thinking I could be out $1000CDN. There was virtually no music or entertainment through the day. [Details]

Never had to wait too long for a drink at the bars. Kids loved the ice cream. Japanese restaurant is great. Steakhouse was terrible.
The weak points
There isn't anywhere to hang wet clothing or bathing suits. Difficult to get into an À la carte. You have to get up at 6am if you want a chance at a pool chair. The buffet food is cold. Bacon always practically raw.

Water slides park is great. Staff are mostly quite friendly. Maid service is reliable. Nighttime entertainment like the Mexican themed night with wrestling and bull riding was a lot of fun for kids.
The weak points
Food. The buffet is terrible. Some meals like Zen teppanyaki and Grazie italian were ok, but just Ok. All desert foods/baked goods were just trash. Food safety and hygiene clearly not well done. Travelled in a group of 23 of 5 families. 8 of us sick

The rooms are nice but everything is about money the resort store is insanely priced I get you wanna make money but 4x the price of anything is insane and greedy the worker at the pool sexually harassed me which I had to complain to management about and they did nothing 2 elevators out of 3 wasn't working they advertise the resort with the most annoying music inside the elevator same thing every day as a women married to a man that works on elevators completely unacceptable in Canada but I guess in Mexico anything flys the entertainment is way to loud also goes too long at night for it to be considered kid friendly I don't know how your putting your child to bed the ocean is not cancun water it's muggy and lots of seaweed for them to be constantly charging what they do to every guest not worth the money. Great resort. We loved the pools, the beach and the swim up bar. There is a lot of seaweed in May. We really liked the buffet. The specialty restaurants that we liked were Zen Teppanyaki, Hunter steakhouse, Smoke, and Grazie. We did NOT like the Brazilian Steakhouse. The coffee cafe was great and the gelato place was tasty too. Nanley was very helpful, professional and provided good customer service. We would definitely go here again. [Details]

Royalton Splash Rivera Cancun

, Eastern Passage, NS

I chose this hotel after really enjoying my time at Royalton Splash Punta Cana last year. However the experience was not the same. This hotel itself was like a concrete high rise. It lacked Mexican flare and a tropical feel. I felt like many of the servers were disgruntled and not friendly. The hotel and grounds were clean and the food was good. The Prime Membership salespeople were very annoying and often disguised as Royalton Guest Services. The pool staff need to better control people taking up pool chairs by removing belongings to vacant chairs. Chairs would be vacant all day but had personal belongings. The Royalton in Punta Cana would remove items if no one was in them after 2 hours. There is no mention on their website about the crocodile issue at the beach and if you are a beach goer this was disappointing. There was not much signage for the sports courts and it was difficult to find. They were also indoors. The pools, water park, and food made up for some of the downfalls. [Details]

The strong points
The Kids activities keep kids of all ages entertained. I had 2 teens and they had a blast.
The weak points
The Beach is very disappointing for people who like to swim in saltwater. Very murky, lots of seaweed & the saltwater crocodiles makes it very unsettling. The only good thing about the beach is that it is quiet, easy to find a seat and get served a drink.

Our experience was excellent. The swim out pool attached to our room was great when the bigger pools got too busy. There was lots to do to keep the kids busy and staff were there at all times when you needed anything. Everything was clean and the food was good. Special mention goes out to our diamond club butler Rene. He was very helpful with reservations, and was available whenever we needed him. His recommendation on where to eat were spot on. Which brings us to Grazie, the Italian restaurant. It also has breakfast where we met David. He was fantastic, and made us feel very welcome. He would do little things like taking an interest in our daughter's teddy bear and bring him a small glass of juice every morning. We went back and requested him every morning for breakfast. Rene the diamond club butler and David the waiter at Grazie for breakfast. I cannot say enough good things about how they enhanced our experience. [Details]

Highs and Lows

Highs and Lows.
First the highs:
The "Vibe Team" activities staff were friendly, engaging, and fun; specially Alberto! They made our teens feel welcome and involved in the action. Our whole family appreciated them!
The Food was also very good, in all venues. "Rio" Brazilian restaurant being the best of the best. Second Place goes to "Hunter Steakhouse" but booking into hunter was very difficult. Agave was also great, as was "Taj", whereas we found the "Cave" was so-so.
The bartenders and serving staff all deserve top marks! They are all friendly, professional, and helpful.
The amenities like the waterslides, splash park, lazy river, bowling, and laser tag are all great additions to the property. We didn't end up using them as much as we thought we would, but when we did, they were fun! We mostly stuck to the pools, restaurants, and volleyball courts.
The wi-fi was also impressive. Great signal in most places, with a few slow/dead spots. This exceeded my expectations.

Now the Lows:
-The room was a major disappointment. We booked a room with 2 beds but ended up with 1 king and 1 pullout couch for 4 people. After spending more than 11,000CDN all-in for a week's vacation, a pullout couch for our teens fell far below our expectations. We told staff multiple times. No remedy was offered.
-To add insult to injury, there were no blankets or pillows for the pullout. I called 5 times for help with the blankets, and I ended up having to go find the blankets myself. The blankets did arrive the next day, which again, fell below our expectations for service and the expense. This put a serious damper on our experience because it was a constant negative element over our 7 day stay. [Details]

I will give this hotel a 5* review. It's clean, the food is great, something for everyone, the public bathrooms are spotless and plentiful. The rooms are huge, king bed with a couch and table with 2 chairs. The bathroom is also huge, double sinks, private toilet and private shower with rain head and separate wand and a stand alone tub.
3 huge pools, of which 2 are infinity pools, then there are the Diamond club pools, extra dollars. Lots of water slides for kids and kids at heart. Along with a lazy river. Tons of pools chairs but you still have to be there early to get one. Lots of snack bar places beside the pools as well as the drink bars. The beach is nice with flour soft sand and has tons of loungers as well. However when we were there the ocean was quite rough to go in for a couple of days.
The a La cartes we attended were fabulous, the bbq smokehouse and the Brazilian. Top notch. The buffet was well attended and very good. Staff is very friendly and most spoke English.
If you're lucky enough you may see the crocodile that lives in the mangrove between the hotels.
I would definitely recommend this hotel and would go back again. [Details]

Please read the negative reviews for this resort prior to booking. Concerns regarding food poisoning, mold & staff receptiveness (lack thereof) to issues are completely accurate. Although the pools and facilities were nice & newer, as well as general room & facility maintenance were well maintained, these are also to be expected for a resort of this level. Unfortunately, we lost 3 days of our trip due to food poisoning, the room had evident black mold in the shower & there was a constant smell of mold during the day & sewage in the early morning hours. We were at the resort for a wedding, and it was clear that the staff had no desire to accommodate inclement weather. As guests, we made our own plans to bring umbrellas, get towels to wipe chairs down etc. there was no staff communication or evident effort to make the experience better. In speaking with other guests, almost everyone lost days from being extremely sick (violent puking, inability to control bowel movements, no appetite). Online reviews indicate this has been a consistent issue and it does not appear to be getting better / sanitary measures are not apparent at the buffet. For the price, we would absolutely book elsewhere and this has also given us a poor perspective on the resort brand altogether. [Details]

We absolutely loved our vacation at the Royalton Splash. We were in the Diamond Club area, so we had a dedicated butler who checked in with us regularly to ensure we were happy, had restaurants booked, and just gave us valuable advice on what to do with our kids there.
The double room accommodated us perfectly, 3 adults and 2 kids. The resort is clean and so family friendly! Our kids, ages 3 and 6 loved all of the entertainment, pools, slides and the beach. The food overall was great as was all of the service. The stores were also excellent. We would definitely go back. [Details]

Hotel food is same at every Royalton, bland with more options than most but usually cold and with no taste. Great for filling up, but generally 3/5 for taste.
Rooms are dated already, but modern. Small for 2 adults and 2 kids. Resort is large but walkable with ease. Pools average about 4-5 pools you can use. All drinks are watered down, you can drink all day and not get drunk. Beach is dirty and water is dirty, just the area it's in. No music at the pool. More for kids than adults. If you have allergies, be careful with the foods as they are not indicated on the items. [Details]

Overall, my experience was good. Had some concerns.
1. Crib broke in the middle of the night when my child was still sleeping in it. He wasn't hurt, called the front desk, didn't really care.
2. Times for some of buffet and ice cream is off and had long line ups.
3. Food selection at resort could be improved. Standard food like fries wasn't at buffet.
4. Booked a dinner for one of the shows, paid almost $200 USD. Booked at 7:30 pm, however they made an error and booked us in the system at 6:30 pm.

The slides were great, pools awesome, room clean etc. [Details]

Overall impressions

, Calgary, AB
2024-03-22
This resort is very big and didn't seem to have enough staff to cater to that large amount of people.
Line ups for food trucks at lunch were ridiculous with only one person serving. Buffet ran out of food frequently. Reservations were not taken for restaurants on the resort which resulted in long waits in the evening for dinner.
Housekeeping was very poor. Decorative cushions left on floor. Ice bucket left full of water. Facecloths not replaced one day.
Room service was available 24hrs but took so long for anything to get to your room it wasn't worth it. When I asked if we could have wine in our room as we don't drink beer I was told it was an extra charge.
Beach had so much seaweed it was not an area you could swim or spend the day. [Details]

The strong points
Great resort, a lot of potential with the slides and beach.
The weak points
Food, bartenders and waitresses made this experience a waste of money. I got sick twice from the food/drinks. No help from hotel, all they wanted to do is get more money from them to help you. Such a bad hotel, defiantly wont go back.

Nice but not worth the stress..

The check in process is an absolute nightmare.
After travelling all day and being exhausted and ready to unwind, expect to wait 2 hours in a very short lineup to check in…. Zero communication as to why the process is so slow…. No organization, no offer of a drink while you wait… nothing.
The rooms weren't ready even though we arrived after the 4pm check in time.
They try to offer a lower rated room although we'd paid for an upgrade.
At check out, another 2 hours for a bracelet cut off… they won't allow you in the airport shuttle unless you've checked out… which literally took an hour and half to complete.
Airport shuttles didn't arrive… 100 people wondering what's going on… zero communication, and zero explanation.
Our flight was at 3pm, however we were instructed to get to the lobby at 9am… for no reason other than they wanted us out.
We sat in the lobby for 4 hours before the shuttle arrived [Details]

Very friendly staff. Clean throughout the resort. Food was very good at buffet and specialty restaurants. No waiting for lounge chairs at the pools. Lots of activities available for guests. Perfect for those with small children who love water! Adults too! Love the lazy rivers. Would definitely go again. [Details]

Royalton VS Grand Moon Palace---Grand Moon Palace!

waterslides were great but every person in our group who used it hurt themselves especially elbows.
Very slippery in the hotel overall and if you fall they don't really care and just say sorry, watch out don't get hurt!!
Mess up on the room categories. If you request two beds in the room your probably only getting one!
Would I return with my 14 and 15 year old, NO [Details]

The strong points
The Buffet was always on point. Drinks in the diamond lounge we great
The weak points
Teenagers were not entertained, if you have kids under 10 this resort is for you! Entertainment team was good but was always on a schedule, if people were having fun and the activity was only slotted for 30mins they packed up and moved on.
