My wife and I have travelled extensively throughout the Caribbean, I must say this is the worst vacation we've ever had. Never have we experience such revolting, disgusting food. The buffet was literally nauseating. we hardly ate all week surviving on bread and cabbage. a tropical island with no fruits or fruit juices, hardly any bottled water, watered down disgusting coffee..all in all a nightmare regarding food. As for cleanliness , our towels and bed sheets hadn't been changed all week, open corridors to our rooms were very filthy.
our rooms were kept reasonably clean. At the airport the customs, security were horribly arrogant, rude and entitled we were treated like criminals.
Sorry to say but we are never going back to Cuba. I feel so sorry for the Cuban people who have to endure such a corrupted dysfunctional regime. [Details]

Initially excited. Soon found out the place seems understaffed. Service wasn't overly friendly either. Lines were insanely long and the service very slow. The buffet was a joke. Super long lines and pure chaos once inside. If you didn't stand in line up to a half hour before opening, you weren't eating. I believe the resort was too big and the Buffett too small. The rooms were clean-ish, water burning hot and struggled with cold water and water to be able to enjoy a decent shower. I won't complain about shortages, because I believe that was not the resorts fault. Hospitality and lack of food was a HUGE issue. Also, we never got towels. The waiters on the beach did one walk thru every morning and that was it. Hire a friendly staff and that will go a long way way. I won't be returning. [Details]

I just spent the week here with my boyfriend. We had a great time! Adalberto, Lisbet, and our room cleaner Denise were amazing. They made our experience here the best. Denise always made sure everything was okay with our room and Adalberto and Lisbeth gave us amazing service. Everyone here was so kind and to my surprise, the food was pretty good and quite flavourful. The beach was crystal clear and clean. Preface

My wife and I are veteran travellers, having visited this part of the world more than 20 times between us. We went into this trip knowing Cuba's current state of the union, exasperated by Russian sanctions. We were under no illusions and our expectations were very low even before we left. However we give every resort the benefit of the doubt. This is our experience....

Bad

Flight
• Our flights were delayed more than 2hrs on the outbound flight and slightly more on the return flight.
• Baggage claim from the return flight took almost 40mins to see the first bag.

Cayo Coco Airport
• Entry & Exit process is very disorganized.
• Security Agents are extremely rude and ignorant. Few speak basic English. (In that role, they should) Ripped me off of $90 because they said I was importing a second Nintendo Switch. (We only had one Carry-on bag for my wife and I) Ripped through my entire luggage while everyone else went free. One security woman was particularly entitled. It was essentially a cash grab. It held up our transfer and all the good folks aboard for more than an hour. Sorry!!!

Hotel / Amenities
• I've stayed at 4 & 5 Star Hotels all over the world. This place is more like 3 at best. Although this comes as no surprise and common throughout the Caribbean. Hotel ratings south of the American boarder exercise their own interpretive system.
• Many parts of the paths are unlit at night and have recessed manhole covers. Someone could easy break an ankle.
• No Wifi in rooms but is available in Lobby Area
• Most staff have an unacceptable comprehension of English (Especially considering how many Canadians come to Cuba)
• They have Hobie Cats available but no one is ever at the beach to reserve one. Front desk had no clue when asked.
• Front Desk / Lobby staff can check you in and out but struggle to answer even the most basic questions.
• Bowling Alley was broken the whole time we were there.
• Beach Parties are way too loud and go on to 1130pm on a Wednesday! DJ on the mic overtalking the music never shuts up.
• If you have medical needs on the resort....FYI bring lots of money.
• Stagnant water throughout the resort and under buildings. Insect breading ground. My wife and I had bites all over our body.

Hotel Rooms
• Rooms appear clean but on closer inspection (eg. Under the beds and around furniture) are careworn and maintened in a sloppy fashion despite maintenance workers all over the resort.
• Broken tiles
• Tons of over spray and paint marks
• Tons of scuffs
• Much of the furniture is broken or marked in some fashion
• Our "Jetted" Tub had no plug and jets did not function.
• Shower has no door.
• Beds do not have enough covers and pillows are very thin and uncomfortable.
• Phones in our room do not work despite having three.
• TP & towels are not always changed/replenishment daily.
• Room should / needs a Do Not Distrub sign. Housekeeping would come right in while we were present and or asleep.
• Our bedroom TV did not work. RCA TV with a Samsung Remote without batteries.
• Coffee maker without Coffee.
• No hot water on our last two days.
• The couple we we're vacationing with had one set of Samsung Buds that went missing from their room.

Food / Drink
• The vast majority of "hot" food options at the buffet is awful. By far the worst in the Caribbean. Selection is limited and repeated most nights.
• Serving stations for made to order items take an eternity.
• Many items are unlabeled and difficult to determine what the item is.
• Most food is luke warm or cold even when coming directly from the kitchen. They need heat lamps or at least a microwave.
• What meats that are available are dry, overcooked, fatty, boney and or tasteless.
• "Pasta" sauces have a very strange smell and taste. It is NOT the tomato sauce you know.
• Salad without dressing or dressing without salad. When dressing is present, it's difficult to identify / locate and is tasteless.
• Lots of flies are present on the food stations and at tables.
• No frys, burgers, or burger/hotdogs buns.
• No condiments. None.
• Limited selection of mix for drinks if you prefer something beyond beer, vodka and rum. Drink prep is inconsistent. Order the same drink 3 times, each time it will taste and look different.
• Pizza Snack Bar: Takes 45mins to 1hr to get your pizza after ordering. Get comfy.
• à la Carte restaurants are marginally better then the buffet but still aren't great.

Good

• Mini Fridges are actually cold and large enough to hold multiple drinks/bottles
• Beach is beautiful. Lots of shade and seating. Water is the perfect shade of turquoise. Bar is very close and accessible.
• Water pressure is good and there is hot water. (Most days)
• Staff is friendly
• Cute kitty's all over the resort
• If you're a smoker, you can smoke all over the resort and in rooms.
• Large pools with lots of seating shade and is clean.
• Bus from airport was fast.
• Many pretty plants and flowers throughout the resort.
• Pizza is the best thing to eat on the resort but it's no Domino's.
• Ice Cream was surprisingly excellent.
• Lobby Internet is decent enough to browse / stream.
• Deli Meats at the buffet were tasty.
• Huge selection of dessert options.
• Our room [Suite] was spacious, two bathrooms, and lots of seating. Dressing room with large mirror and shelving. Many plugs are available to charge your electronics.
• Many bars throughout the resort.

Summary
We will never return to Cuba. Mexico is more expensive but definitely worth the extra. Go to Dominican or Jamaica. If you can afford it the try one of the West Indies. Just don't go to Cuba. [Details]

4th Visit to MJDR

Very pleasant resort. Quite large, room location can result in a lot of walking as this property is big. Stunning beach. No water shoes needed. Good a/c in rooms and a la carte restaurants. Main buffet stifling hot, we skipped a few meals due to the discomfort of pouring sweat while trying to eat. Staff do their best to accommodate guests however several times bars ran out of both mixes & alcohol (bring some of your own is a good plan) and food options were limited as well. VERY BAD mosquitoes/noseeums/biting bugs ~~ our group of 10 were all badly bitten despite using repellents. Also tons of flies everywhere. On prior visits to the MJDR these issues were nowhere near as noticeable, it seems that pest control measures are no longer in use? I would return to this resort but only if/when the insect issues are under control and the air conditioning in the buffet is restored. These may seem small issues but definitely affected our enjoyment of our holiday. [Details]

Amazing Resort! A must stay!

We are on our last day and absolutely had to best time. I just wish we could stay longer. Adalberto in the customer service area is fantastic and has really made our stay so comfortable. When you make it to the beach you have to say hi to all the staff especially Joel. He goes above and beyond for his guests. The beach stunning, the food great, the rooms and vibe excellent. If your thinking about travelling to Cuba you have to come and stay here!!! 5/5 star.

Home away from home! We were thrilled to be back. Adalberto went above and beyond for us he arranged a ride from the airport to a early check in to an upgraded room for returning guests with an ocean view. Adalberto is the definition of good management. Now JOELLE at the beach bar, is a shinning star and ensures everything is perfect and that we are constantly happy. His upbeat energy and positive attitude made our whole day. All the restaurant reservations were already set up for us and arrangements for a late checkout since our flight isn't until 8pm. 4 day trip short and sweet but filled with great experiences and quality people ensuring we have nothing short of a good time. A good hotel in an excellent location with amazing staff. We had a great 1 week vacation. Healthy food choices. Buffet and a la carts.
Our room was spacious and great air conditioning. Maid service everyday. Entertainment was good especially night time. Huge pools and a paradise of a beach. Beach is large not crowded and you can snorkel and see many fish and such. Management is very attentive and respond to requests promptly and try their best. We will return and recommend. [Details]

Hotel needs updates

I was there for 2/wks .. first time staying there..
First day no working safe , phone or wking toilet..
Send repair people up .. but phone line were down the whole hotel.. next day no working toilet they repair & I asked to be moved , said no room available.. plumbers the next day .. then they ask me not to flush .. so for the next 11 days no use of a toilet.. staff is very nice & trying to help with no Answers .. no eggs 3/days , white wine or gin
The beach is beautiful too bad the hotel doesn't do any upgrades .. same as the spa. No hot water
So you can't shower or use the hot tub ..

Incredible vacation at Melia Jardines Del Rey

My son and I had a wonderful time at the Melia Jardines Del Rey. This was our first time visiting Cayo Coco. Before we came we read many reviews, some good and some not so good. I was primarily concerned about the food because my son and I have celiac disease and cannot eat gluten - this means no bread, pasta, pizza, cereal. It can be challenging for us when we travel internationally. I wrote to the resort prior to our arrival to explain our diet. Adalberto in customer service replied to me and assured me that they can accommodate a gluten-free diet. Upon our arrival he put me in touch with Francisco Rodriguez who is a supervisor in the food and beverage department. Francisco took great care of us. He went above and beyond to make sure we had delicious gluten-free meals. He communicated with the chefs in all the restaurants to arrange specially prepared meals. We enjoyed chicken, lobster, pork chops, risotto, omelettes and more. The food was so good and we did not get sick at all during our stay. We are so grateful for all his help. He always made us feel welcome and genuinely cared about our experience. I read some reviews of people complaining about shortages of food, but that was not our experience. During breakfast there was plenty of eggs, bacon, cheese, fruit, vegetables and pastries. At lunch they had grilled meats, pasta stations and many options. We didn't eat from the buffet because of our allergies but we saw that food was plentiful. I think it's important for people to understand that when you visit a different country the food may be different than you are accustomed to and it's good to try new foods. The a la carte restaurants also offered many great options. I would like to acknowledge as well the chefs: Oscar and Manny at the buffet and Michael and his wife at the Italian restaurant. They prepared many delicious meals for us. I would also like to express my appreciation to Yohander, Juan Carlos, Melissa Yosvanis at the front desk, and Lisbet, Adalberto and Michael in Customer service for all their help during our stay. Special thanks to our server, Yosiemi at the Italian restaurant and to the staff at the lobby bar, cafe and beach bar. All these people work so hard to please the guests. [Details]

The people here are amazing. They are kind, helpful and really work hard to accurate the guests request. The beach is beautiful, pools are nice and the evening entertainment was fantastic.

There are some areas of the resort that are in need of repair. The rooms are adequate, but could use an update. There is only wifi in the lobby, which makes communication challenging but is good in a way to get a break from electronics
Sanitary measures
The rooms are clean, housekeeping does a good job. Sometimes there was no paper or soap in public area bathroom.

We were debating about going to this resort, and we were seeing many mixed reviews online. Keep in mind, some of the reviews were outlandish and not possible to be a problem, while some seemed genuine. We were there from March 2 -9, and we're already planning our next visit!

Food: We went in with an open mind, knowing the current supply issues for Cuba and the lack of condiments and spices. We never went hungry! The buffet for breakfast always had fresh omelets being made and always had potatoes, bacon, and some kind of pastries. Always trays of deli meat, cheese and fruit every time as well. Lunch was fine at the buffet, but we tried the snack bar and the pizza bar. The snack bar always had cold beer and French fries, and always had ketchup available. We were only able to go to the pizza bar once, as they ran out the one day. The pizza was good and the staff was amazing. We visited three a la carte's during our visit that were included. Our favourite was definitely the Cuban-Creole, where our waiter DARIAN was amazing! He always had our wine glasses topped and our food came out quick and was amazing. The other two a la carte's were good as well. We also recommend hitting up the ice cream bar! The ladies that work there are very nice!

LINET at the buffet was one of the most amazing employees ever. She always greeted us with a big smile and a high five and took us to her section and immediately brought us drinks. What a gem! Love her!

Room: Was great for what we needed. Always had fresh towels and linens. We were told that our fridge was restocked daily with beer, water and pop. When we asked the front desk, it was one giant water bottle upon consumption and one beer a day. However, it was tough to get anything else. We did ask for beer to be brought up and they did bring it upon request. We were not far from any of the bars, so it wasn't a problem. We did have a issue with our shower on the third day, it was backed up. We called down to the front desk and within 20 minutes a man arrived and was fixed right away!

Grounds: The grounds are amazing. Yes, it is a large resort and some buildings were farther than others, but nothing too overwhelming. There were always people working on the grounds, watering plants, cutting grass and landscaping. We were always greeted with a smile and an Hola! My wife received a beautiful flower from one of them made out of palm leaves. We also gifted two of them small gifts from home and they were beyond grateful. The pools were always clean and had lots of space to sit in either lounge chairs or one of the cabanas. The beach was beautiful, and we regret not spending more time there.

Entertainment: The staff was awesome. There were always shows at night, and a few times after the show they had a dance party adjacent to the lobby where they had a great DJ and emcee. Every day at the pool there was entertainment: singing, dancing, Zumba, etc. EL TIGRE & LORENA were awesome!

General: The Wi-Fi was only really worked in the lobby and at the pool, despite being advertised as free throughout. This wasn't a problem for us, a we weren't there for work. Everyone got a login 70-hours of internet. Yes, the signal would drop and it could be difficult to get on, but you're coming to Cuba for a vacation! The Lobby Bar was always great, did not wait long in lines or for anyone to bring you a drink. YAINIER at the bar was amazing, his wife works there as well and they were so sweet. Also YAIRILIS from the pool bar was very friendly and awesome!

We are already looking at booking to go back next year around the same time. Don't listen to all the negative reviews. Cuba is still having supply and trade issues, and still recovering from the pandemic, but the staff at Meliá Jardines del Rey go out of their way to make sure you are as comfortable as possible. I have officially found my Cuban home! The staff here make you feel like family and so appreciative and crack jokes with you! This is my third time visiting this resort within the last 12 months and potentially the only one I will go to in Cuba because of the staff. Also it seems to me that they really appreciate polite constructive criticism so they know how to get better each year.

Last year I recommended some food upgrades and I am happy to say the changes were very apparent to me this trip! They have a new BBQ el le carte which was incredible! The buffet added a rice bar, pasta bar and even had a sushi bar the one day we went!! If they would like to continue to improve in the food department I might add an hour to the pizza bar hours and potentially get a second oven as the food was delicious but the wait time can get high, same with the meat grill in the buffet. But overall the food was really good and they have a variety of places/food to eat!

We had ocean view this time and it was incredible!! Waking up to the ocean right outside of your window is something special!! The room and housekeeping were both great but we didn't have hot water (was still warm) to shower with the last 2 days before we left.

The beach is unfortunately where they lose some points in my opinion as it's really rocky but if you have water shoes or take it slow when walking in you'll be fine. I would LOVE to see them build some docks out to a sand bar! Even bringing in some sand would probably go along way!

Having the restaurant right on the beach as well as a bar with waiters walking around taking orders with the entrainment team playing music, dancing, and volleyball makes the beach an incredible place to hangout regardless of the slow entry needed into the water. Not to mention the incredible, calm ocean and great weather with beautiful views!

This is the best spot in Cuba!

This was our third time here in the last year and is easily the only resort we will go to in Cuba! The staff is absolutely incredible and will do anything to make your stay enjoyable. They've made huge improvements to their food and beverage selections, adding in pasta bar and fried rice bar, as well as sushi nights - all incredible meals! Banana mamas, pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris are all great vacation drinks and taste incredible!

Juan-Carlos at the front desk is super accommodating and very friendly. Lisbet and Alberto are in customer service and always check in to see how you're doing.

It's a long one but I promise 90% of your questions will be answered in this review, maybe even closer to 99%.

I have wrote this review a few times now. You will see negative reviews but they will not come from me or the smiling faces that surrounded us the week we were there.

I have come to realize some people just like to complain. This really became obvious as a friend of mine explained how amazing their trip was at a resort in Mexico. Funny thing is another friend of mine went to the same resort in Mexico a week later and said it was great as well. Well.... I go to said resort review and I see a bunch of good reviews and then the bad ones like, do not go here, terrible service, horrible food etc. I'm thinking to myself, how does a trip that cost $2600 per person for a resort that is a 5 star have "terrible" service and horrible food etc?. Instant light bulb, you can't please everyone. The unfortunate part is that many people of today's world like to be unpleased. Make sense?
Those who are upset about something really like to complain and they will complain about EVERYTHING! You will usually see these people post a small inconvenience on a group and then they will just spiral out of control letting everything bother them to the point where it seems they actually start looking for bad things instead of enjoying them selves.

Sorry for that, seems like a rant but it was more of a lesson lol.
Our trip cost us less then $1000 each and we got the pleasure of feeling like a king and queen for 8 days!

** 48 hours before arriving in Cuba make sure you fill out your Cuba D'Viajeros travel form. Save the emailed code to your phone as it can be scanned, it doesn't hurt to print it as well. They are now asking to see it before you get on the plane and when you land in Cuba.

**Visa for Cuba will be handed to you on the plane, it is small and takes a min to do. Take a pen and make no mistakes. If you make a mistake you will be charged for a new one.

We went through Airports both YYZ and CCC without a hiccup. When you go through customs in Cuba and open the door BE COURTEOUS AND BE CAREFULL!. There are people standing on the other side of the door, please pay attention to the line up and go to your place in line.

On with the review;

**Note; this review was made while resort was NOT at full capacity.

My wife and I arrived around 11:30am on Nov 30th and left the resort @ 7pm on the night December 7th. The flight times we picked this time gave us almost 8 days. Always check flight times and pick what's best for you.

Bus ride takes 15min tops. Beats the long almost two hour ride to Cayo Santa Maria. We have been to Cuba probably 16 times and this was at least our 8th time at this resort. Beer on the bus is $5 per beer now. In 2018 it was 2 for $5. If you feel like it please tip the bus driver as he does handle all of your bags.

Check in was very fast, 1 drink wait lol.

Room was beautiful and very clean. Room fridge was refilled everyday with the beer and water. *Note* put a tip in the fridge upon arrival with your preferred requests and I am sure the fridge filling crew will do their best to accommodate you. We did not get many "blanket animals" on out bed this trip but that wasnt a big deal lol. We just find it cool when the maid has a creative mind. All and all our room was clean. A few of the days our maid went as far as organizing our shoes. Thank you!
Please remember, the fridge team and the maids are two separate people. If we needed something in our fridge we would always place a tip inside with a note. We left a tip for our maid everyday on the pillow and the last day we leave some things we brought for her to have or do what she likes with. Yes there is a hair dryer. It does have a 110 outlet built into it as well.

Food was absolutely amazing. Best i have had in a long time.

Breakfast;
We had eggs everyday except when we got to the buffet a little late due to previous nights activities. (Thanks Wayne and Mark lol). The powdered egg mix wasnt my favorite those 2 days but eggs are hard to get there right now. We had bacon and toast everyday which was nice because last year they were short many days. There was also a crepe station. My omelette maker and server always get a tip if our service is with a smile.

Lunch
We mainly ate at the 24hr snack bar by the party pool or the pizza bar by the quiet pool.
Snack bar had burgers, ham and cheese sandwiches, pork sandwiches, chicken sandwiches and sometimes my wife's favorite, Tuna sandwiches. They also had hot dogs and fries. We would like to thank Ismael and Leo for great service.
The Pizza is very good. Warning, if you ask for everything you may get things like Tuna or shrip on your pizza. NOTHING FROM THE SEA FOR ME! lol

Expect a 30min wait if it's a packed place.
We ate at the main buffet for lunch one day and it was great, pasta station and fried rice station and everything in between. Once again, great service and smiles always get rewarded.

A la carte restaurants;

These dinners can be booked everyday in the morning at the lobby/buffet entrance.

New BBQ restaurant.
We were honored day one of our trip to experience the grand opening of the new BBQ restaurant. With a restaurant full of family we had a meal that knocked our socks off. We tried almost everything on the menu that the BBQ has to offer and to say we were blown away would be an understatement. Very good job to all involved, people are going to love this.
Return guest dinner was night number 2 and it was unbelievable. My wife had lobster and pork. Since it's nothing from the sea for me, Reny was there to save me and made sure i had a lobster substitute!. I had sausage and the most delicious pork i have ever had. Starters for the meal were deep fried cheese balls and a garlic toast with toppings followed by cuban soup. A truly amazing meal at the BBQ restaurant. Thanks to my boy Ray for outstanding service. Amazing job keeping my wine glass full ;).

When we thought food couldn't get any better we ate at 2 other A la Cartes, the Creole Restaurant (not sure if I spelled that right) and the Oriental. The food at both of these restaurants was so delicious. From the start to the finish the meal was great. If you like sushi my wife had some at the Oriental.

Buffet had the pasta, meat and fried rice stations going so I was set! Wait times were normal, I would stand in one line and the wife another and we would trade half of our food to each other. Pasta and fried rice are my favorite so win win. My wife was told that one night they had sushi in the buffet as well.

In short, we ate some of the best food ever this week. Great Job everyone working in the restaurants and buffet. You should all be very proud of what came out of those kitchens.
Food and service were top notch and again, smiles get rewarded. ;)

The Beach;
Beach is beautiful. Sad to say but it has lost some beauty in spots. Now that being said, it has gained beauty in other spots. Unfortunately the beach isnt as wide as it used to be and the sand has shifted around over the last few years making it rocky in spots but sandier in others. They have done an amazing job cleaning up the tree line of the beach and they have built so many new palapa's. Not a problem getting shade and chairs. Chair guy, (cant believe i forgot his name) can help you find chairs and he will brush them off for you. A few bucks showing gratitude will go a long way for the next day [Details]

Pulling up to this amazing, very large lobby, the best in Cayo Coco. Melia Jardine's Del Ray Has a special part in my heart.
From the moment my husband and I arrived November 23rd Until December 7th. We were treated like family It felt like they missed us as much as we missed them. Juan Carlos Lopez Greeted us with a huge smile. As always check in was very fast and easy, He is always such a pleasure to be around along with,Yohander Her adez And the rest of the front desk.
ROOM
It didn't take long at all before we were in our room We stayed in building 19, The room was clean. The bed was very comfortable and the view was beautiful.
We had lots of hot water and pressure Mini fridge. Always had beer and water our made Mary did a wonderful job with our room.

BEACH
beach was amazing as always, it is a little Rocky in spots,but that never bothered us as we always take water shoes better safe than sorry.
Yunni At the beach was amazing, never stopped working hard getting chairs for everyone a big shout out to him.

Beach bar
A big shout out to Omelio and Joel and their team, For always making the best drinks. Wow, they really know what they are doing and they always have a smile on their faces. They're always happy.

Pools
This hotel has 2 massive pools. One is the quiet pool and the other is the party pool. Yeisy Morales at the party pool is great She's always happy and ready to serve you along with her amazing team.

Entertainment team

They are all so friendly and work extremely hard to keep everyone entertained, But I must say that my favorite one was Yonatan Known as Yonny. They are always busy interacting with all the clients.
Teaching Zumba, dance classes, playing volleyball and many other activities.
At night they keep the party going at the majito bar.

The grounds
The grounds are always kept clean and lush. The gardeners work very hard, Mandy at the coconut station is always there to serve you with a smile.

The coffee shop

This coffee shop is amazing, from their cappuccino's to their ice coffee I couldn't get enough. Yamy Green Spoiled us

Food
The 24 hour snack bar served French fries, hamburgers, hot dogs, ham and cheese sandwiches, chicken sandwiches, and tuna sandwiches.
The ice cream parlor was always a treat with. their tasty chocolate, vanilla and strawberry sometimes even other delicious flavors.

Buffet
Be kind, please try to remember that these people work 16 hours at a time when you go for breakfast the same people will be there serving you at dinner as well.
For breakfast I always had eggs, Bacon toast with butter and marmalade. There was always an omelet station, a pancake station and tons of pastries. Quite a bit to choose from.
For lunch there was lots to choose from as well. You had the buffet a pizza bar the 24 hour snack bar and now they turned the beach buffet to an ala cart that you do not need reservations for.
Dinner, they just opened up a brand new ala cart called the barbecue, it is definitely a must try.
The buffet is always a good Option One night they even had sushi, which was an amazing treat.

Public relations
What can I say only that You can't get much better they go out of their way to do what they can. Lisbet Guevara Machado along with her team Adalberto and her other assistant I Just cannot remember her name are wonderful.
We were there for 15 days and they arranged 3 birthdays and made each and every one special in their own way.
You can definitely see how hard they work and try to make everyone feel special. Lisbet and her team are one of the best.

Food and service have been great. The drinks are delicious and the staff have gone above and beyond our expectations. The entertainment team are so much fun and get us involved in so many activities. This resort is beautiful and it is HUGE. The beach is gorgeous, the weather was perfect and the staff is so friendly and works so hard.

BUT

We were aware that mosquitoes and no see ums are a problem, but we had NO idea as to the serious extent of how they completely ruined our vacation. Morning, noon and night, no matter where you are, you will be infested with not only mosquitoes, no see ums and even sand fleas, but houseflies are absolutely off the charts. Don't expect any of your food or drink not to have been touched by a housefly. Inside the buffet restaurant is infested with them. All over the tables and the food. No amount of Off! Spray helped. My husband and I, and many, many other guests looked like we had chicken pox. Don't believe any reviews that downplay the insects because they are lies. Thank goodness, I brought After Bite, which helped, but the itch of these bites is insane.

There was no toilet paper in most of the public washrooms and water flow in the sinks is a trickle at best. There is also no paper towel or air dryers to dry your hands.

Our room was nice. It's Cuba, so we didn't expect much, so the fact that it was clean and air conditioned was as much as we expected. We did pay for an ocean view room and we could see the ocean, but not without looking at the swamp of runoff water right below our room…this swampy water is found throughout the resort and I think this likely contributes to the insect problem, as well as the fountain water in the lobby, which was never running once during the week, creating a breeding ground for insects, especially mosquitoes.

The staff are all lovely. Always going out of their way to say, “Hola!” Or to get you a drink.

Drinks are good. Not watered down at all like I've read in other reviews.

Food is a disaster, even for Cuba. I lost 6 lbs last week because the food is just awful. And seeing flies sitting on that food just killed my desire to eat anything. Thank God, neither of us got sick.

Entertainment was nice. The dancers are very good and the nightly shows were very nice to watch. The saxophone player in the lobby one night was also fantastic.

As I said, this resort is beautiful, but it is quite rundown and needs a lot of TLC to brung it up to what I think its potential is. While we were there, there were probably 200 people there and the capacity is over 1,000, so it was nice not to have to line up for anything and we were always easily able to find loungers exactly where we wanted them.

A special shout out to Joel at the beach bar. He was super friendly and got to know what we liked to drink and always had them ready when he saw us coming.

A few days after we arrived, the resort started spraying pesticide around the lobby. It was done while we were all sitting in the lobby though, and while it's open air, no one wants to see pesticides being sprayed right beside you. They need to invest in some zappers for the buffet restaurant or even fly paper. Something, ANYTHING to get rid of the bugs.

We had really hoped to enjoy a week away, but we found ourselves wishing we could go home by the fifth day. [Details]

It's a large area w nice and well cared gardens. The beach is always great and is the strong point for me. Swimming pools are many and wonderful. Now regarding food, service, shows and music - all got down. Clientele as well seems remote, arrogant and even rude. I was told that the manager was in holliday. I had never seen before staff drinking beer and eating during their working hours. Cleaning crew arguing at loud voice, instead of doing their job. Even got a driver swearing, and he knew that I do speak Spanish.
Big lines for a fried egg during breakfast, -well if that is what clients prefer, why not set more stations? Some mornings we stayed more than 20 minutes waiting in a line, while some single guests order and get 12 omelettes! There is a total waist as left overs, chocking even, when we all know that Cuba is in a bad economic phase and goods are scarce.
A couple of sinks installed by the entrance of the large buffet restaurant would be good. Some guests eat morcels and lick their fingers while on line...Not to mention flies over the food.
It's all a bit too much to take over one week vacation with family. [Details]

This was our 2nd stay at the Melia. We had such a great time in 2018, we wanted to go back.
Staff, amazing all go above and beyond with pure care. Lisbet, was amazing she answered all my emails, and room requests and alacartes were all done upon arrival. we did not have to wait for our room which was amazing, as we were able to start enjoying our stay. We stayed in block 26, 3rd floor facing pool, our maids that we had such lovely ladies, and had our room cleaned, and we lacked nothing.
The resort was as low capacity ( maybe 250/300) we didn't mind this as there were no lineups for anything. There was always something to eat, but the food selection was low. We understand the shortages that this country faces daily, so go with the flow.
The really only complaint we had were the amount of flies that were there. I believe the Melia could do better, with covering up food more as this was a bit of an issue for the guests. The Alacartes restaurant are also facing the same issues with the bugs. Maybe investing in fly traps/zappers, this would help out a lot. Food was great, but annoying flies, were pesky.
We had a great time and enjoyed our beach days. The beach bar staff, joel and his team always happy and making great drinks. Melia, you have one of the best staffs at your resort. friendly always smiling and asking if we were ok or needed anything always! I was sick the last day, and Melba went everywhere looking for chamomile tea for me, she did not stop until she found some...truly a gem.
Aldalberto, great fellow, always making sure all was good. The husband and wife team at the lobby bar amazing too. He made the best coffees and she's a doll, getting me tonic water for my stomach. i wish i could remember everyone's names, but there was not one person that was not friendly. all in all we had a nice time. Another Fabulous Vacation at Melia JDR

2nd visit to Melia Jardines del Ray this year (January & April), I think that makes 7 visits in total to this resort, and each one is better! The Staff are what brings us back—they are very friendly, attentive & hard workers. Like a second family to us. The beach and sunshine are bonuses! Lol
We are accustomed to travelling to Cuba, so we don't set our expectations high when it comes to food—but we always find something to eat and drink and are NEVER hungry. Plenty to choose from at the bar. If there were food or drink shortages, they were never long-lived. Sometimes only a few hours, or the next day. We always bring our own condiments. Our room was clean and well-supplied as usual. Any small issues were quickly attended to once they were reported. The beach changes each time we visit. The sand bars move and the sand seems to shift. There are more exposed rocks/coral at some spots when entering the ocean, but there are plenty of sandy entrances as well.
The pool is always entertaining—they were having some balance issues with chemicals, so the water was a bit green, but they were working hard to correct it.
All in all a fabulous trip. Always remember, your trip is what you make of it—we go for the people, the beach, and the sunshine! There are always little inconveniences, but politely making a request with a smile goes a LONG way :)
