I have been to Kawama 4 times and have always had a great time. My maid was fantastic, i had a clean room every day. All the staff was extremely friendly and the entertainment was great. Had wifi which was $5 for 3hrs which was nice, but a bit spotty by my room. My room was awesome had a superior room with a ocean view. I would deffinately recommend Kawama to my friends! 5☆s from me [Details]

Go to Kawama and Cuba with an open mind. As you know Cuba is having its problems right now and a week at Kawama was great , there was always food and ask Josaline the new public relations person for your a la carte meals , she will take care of you shes amazing. Front reception with Yadelin was as easy check in but , be aware its a 4pm check in so pack swimming stuff in your on flight bag. Your a la carte at Gran Canal is great with service from Pedro and Maday. There was always beer at the pool bar and the beach and ocean are amazing. Pay extra for a superior room to make your stay more enjoyable. Kawama is a 3 star you get what you pay for but the staff are 5 star [Details]

I am not happy with this hotel services and someone was getting into my rental room. All towels and blankets were in the room when I checked out from this Club Kawama Hotel on Jan 17 2023 @11 am local time. Please inform local -Varadero- police that I was a victim of hate crime and discrimination in this hotel. I was accused of stealing a face towel from room # 4807 and this minor thing has no value for me. Please don't use this hotel for your guest booking. Please inform tourist do's and don'ts in this country. They harsh my friend for the towel payment or they wrongfully accused us in this hotel. This hotel manager should have wrote me in this matter and I would have used my visa for the payment. It is seriously disappointing and concerning how this hotel treated us. Please inform hotel manager in this matter that I am seriously disappointed and my number is 343-558-0115 [Details]

Arrived around 2pm. Had to wait until 4pm to get room. Reception was rather cold, no smile. I expected to receive important information like breakfast, lunch and dinner location, hours, etc. but I was just told to store my luggage and wait until around 4pm. Hotel grounds are well kept. It is a very old building. A little run down. Room was clean but it rained at night and water leaked from the ceiling. Hotel staff inspected it and they gave me a better room the next day. Breakfast was good. Lunch and dinner not so much. Food flavor needs improvement. The Risolino Restaurant seems to be the best option but I only found out it needed reservation for dinner at the end of my stay (something they could have told me upon arrival). A little disappointed that I had to pay for drinking water bottle. Alcohol is easily available. Snacks not so much. The only non-alcoholic drinks available are lemonade, Sprite, Coca-Cola and Orange Soda. Beach is awesome. Very easy access. Most of nightly entertainment was dancing, bingo during the day for the kids and pool ballet on Friday. Hotel location is okay, a 30 minute walk to main local businesses. I had to wait for almost 3 hours to get my COVID pre-departure test. Check-out was quick. Just had to hand over my room key. Overall not a bad experience. But I would try a different resort next time. [Details]

Rats, food so nasty you would rather fast during your stay, old dirty rooms, nasty swimming pool, old hotel, here is what you will fond going in that hotel, if I dare call it that. After the 1st night, on which i could not sleep because i had the pleasant surprise to be woken up by a rat of the lenght of my leg, i transfered to a 5stars resort( thank god). The food was disgusting, i did not know boiled eggs could taste like dirty feet, now thanks to kawama I do. I beg you, pay a little more and go to a worthy place, no this garbage. [Details]

... that is all I want and at the Camp Kawama that is what I get at a "Last Minute Price". First off I am launching a petition to change the name of any 4 Cuban Stars or less "Hotel" to Camp name. Because that exactly what you get and for you to be satisfied with your trip you have to understand this and the tour operator, resort or whatever should disclose the fact that they offer you a camp visit with a cafeteria ( they call it Buffet ) This is NOT a complaint! I am a repeat visitor and I met many regulars at the Kawama, thing is we know what to expect which is not much! How does this help you? For one, this knowledge give you a choice and you can make an educated decision if this is what you want. Number two, nothing beats experience and shared experience ( that is why you read this ) will help you beat the "system" or tourist trap(s) or at least makes it tolerable. Number three, budget/ estimate your expenses and change your money at the airport( CAN$ 1.37) or the bank at 32 Calle NOT at the exchange office (CAN$1.47), or the hotel, restaurant, shops and certainly not with an individual or vendor. There is a lot more but I am running out of time. Happy Travel!Show less Date of stay: November 2019 Room tip: Try to get a renovated room. Alternatively complain, complain, complain and complain some more, but nicely and preferably in spanish! [Details]

Worse experience
Jessica, Mascouche, QC
2019-07-30
I've gone to 6 different resorts in cuba and I normaly have nothing to say but this was the worse experience I've had. Many things that went wrong during our stay here are a few things. Employee's were very rude, especially the front desk staff. No animation during the day. The dance crew were practicing their dance routine during the day so they would play the same song all day. The buffet food was actually better then the restaurants on site. We were told the room was clean and ready but they didn't give it to us until 4Pm. I work in the hotel industry and I understand that check-in dosen't start until 4PM, but if you see that 40 people are waiting in the hall with no place to sit, it would be appreciated to check-in the guest who's room are already done. We were told we would receive a bottle of rhum in our room but never received it, even asking 4 different times. (same for our friends who also had a suite). The locals who would pay to spend the day there would skip us in lines while we would wait for food and drinks. What bothers me is that the staff would see this and still serve them. The drinks were diluted with water from the tap ( I know because I saw them do it) so everyone we were with got sick, including many people we met over there. Also, many things that were supposed to be included like the spa wasn't available. [Details]

The entertainment was about the best thing they had ... Many issues with room then I had to upgrade and pay alot of money to them ... Then our fridges were never filled the staff was ok well some were great some were rude .... The food was not the best and when going to the snack bar we were told to wait hours before being served as locals came first ordering 10 burgers each and taking them off the resort ... There was never Internet cards there to purchase had to take a cab to get some ..... Complained to the management and nothing was done about the issues we were pushed to the side ..... Our room was full of bugs and lizards the hotel was always flooded was not a good experience at all [Details]

Older resort, close to town. There are 3 pools, but two were closed, probably for the season. We were in Building 41....have to Greyhound it in (joke) to the main area. Truthfully, about a 10 minute walk to the buffet, main pool etc. Room was very clean. Staff was wonderful. Nice afternoon snack bar with wonderful porkchops and chicken (didn't try the shrimp or fish) right near our room....also two bars by our room. Food was awesome, although others complained about it....not sure why. Pool was clean. Beach is wonderful. Nothing really negative to say....it's Cuba!!!! [Details]

The sun is the best part of a Cuban holiday. Staff were mostly friendly, my 5 year old boy had a great time. Met some fellow Canadians along the way and had a great time. Some more attention to the kids club would be beneficial as it wasn't geared towards the English kids, and didn't run consecutive days or times. Room was not amazing, but clean, and for the amount of time we spent in it did the job. The place is old, I feel like there's a lack of pride of ownership of the resort. Maybe that's just the culture but I'm not sure . I'll go back again . My son had a great time and it was lovely to escape the winter cold of Canada . [Details]

We go to Cuba. We love it. We understand the politics, sanctions and have a very short list of must have. Club Kawama staff are the most ignorant , lazy , shady bunch we have encountered in Cuba. The hotel room had bugs , bed bugs and cockroaches. Gang graffiti was a surprise. It was filthy. Hotel line up to complain was too long everyday to bother but my friend bought off the lady with the multi coloured hair. The boss lady in cash under the table. Ok. It's cuba. Garbages were full to overflowing the entire week. No one cleaned them. A lady knocked over drinks in lobby bar and we reported it. 45 min later I found a closet and hauled a mop and broom through the lobby in plane site if all staff. Cleaned it up before someone was hurt and they never batted an eye. Let's talk about these repeaters!! If your one who returns every year , your in ok shape. They will be a bit nicer. It's a huge click and your at the back of the line. Creepy old Canadians with pretty Cuban ladies all over. Julio is one old man who was quite a site to see with a young lady. How are they allowed ?? Overall the worst staff ever. Rude , lazy and indifferent. They will talk on the phone or to one another for 15 minutes before they will acknowledge u ?? Beach in front of hotel was filthy. Guy at beach bar was amazing ! So overall. Do not go there. Disgusting hotel !! [Details]

You get what you pay for. It is a three star hotel, not in the best shape, but nice. The room was disappointing. The bathroom was dirty (bathtub), but the rest of the room was clean. Toilet paper was always an issue, and since we were far from the front desk, it was a task. The beach made this all okay, it was beautiful and that was where we spent most of our time. The staff were surprisingly unfriendly for the most part. There were a few exceptions, but they seemed unhappy. The food was wonderful, I've read a lot of complaints about the food and I'm not sure why. Great variety and very tasty. The reservations for a la carte are only taken between 10-12, and the person that does it (PR, ironically) is usually 20m late. Always a line-up. Disco was closed, not updated on the website. The music was sometimes trying and seemed like it was for seniors (Michael Bolton) [Details]

Should have been a family trip
Kathleen, Toronto, ON

This resort is good enough, especially for the price, however, there is no night life and the places nearby aren't any better. One would have to travel to the opposite end of Varadero for any type of night life.
We overheard someone ask about the disco and the response was that it was broken. Based on our walks around the place we aren't really sure where the disco would have been anyway.
Rooms......they are nothing to be excited about, basic amenities and depending on your room (it appeared there were very nice ones in some locations) you could experience the following: - Twin beds.........very uncomfortable twin beds, the one my other half slept on had a broken spring that actually stuck into him and cause a fairly deep cut. - Fear of electrical short ...... our bathroom light popped and cracked when it would actually turn on, sometimes it just wouldn't work or sometimes you had to turn on both switches instead of just the one, it was questionable - Mini Fridge ........ Ours froze everything no matter what temp it was set to, however, on our last day many of these fridges were being replaced so might not be an issue in the near future - Exchange rate is terrible, however, the bank line ups are worse so be prepared to lose money every time - Coffee is only served at the lobby bar despite the other bars having coffee machines - The foam party on Saturday was a little sad. The form wasn't started until after the party and by then there were so many people for this tiny machine that it just piled in one spot in the pool - Music is lacking as a whole. During the day by the pool there is sad music, we call it party ending music, and occasionally they turn on faster more up beat music but the songs never end, they cut them off and change them before you know what is happening. - Shows/Entertainment - Seriously lacking in this department, especially when it is the only thing the resort does for its guests. The magic show was ok and the dance show was good was Michael Jackson came out, beyond that every show was the same songs sung by various bands all in Spanish. The sound system set up for these shows were so bad the mic's were often not on. The instruments would be so loud it would hurt my ears.
Everything at this resort is shut down by 11 pm outside of the one outdoor bar. This outdoor bar made terrible drinks. I tried all week with various kinds, amounts of alcohol but it didn't matter. Whatever came from them wasn't very good.
The buffet was ok, it is Cuba after all, but we both managed to find something at every meal to eat. We did not try either a la carte, however, we did go into town twice and both times the food was delicious, the pizza at the near by Italian restaurant was fantastic! Oh and for most of the meals we had to wait 30 - 40 minutes to be let in to the buffet in order to eat. I've never experienced a buffet line up so not sure if this is common but worth the mention as you are stuck in the sun/heat. Didn't matter what time you went to the buffet either.
The beaches were great, lots of chairs and shaded places. The main pool was nice, however, the two additional pools were really dirty and lacked any kind of shade and very few chairs around these pools.
We would not go back for just the two of us as we are night owls and it became daunting trying to think of things to do when there is no music, no where to go and the beach is off limits. We will be returning with my 9 yr old as I believe the place is great for kids and reasonably priced for that. [Details]

Do Not Go! Nightmare!!

Day 1- Upon arrival 10:30 am front desk (Ilene) told us no rooms must wait an hour. Then she told us at noon that check in was not until 4:00 pm. In my shock, to this I responded you told us an hour and she rolled her eyes and shrugged her shoulders. She could careless. Customer Service is not bad there is none!! Then we get a room at 4:30, to return back to the lobby as this room smelled strong of mold and had no working phone with a toilet that did not work. Once there, in frustration we asked to speak to a manager. After approximately another 30 minutes we were approached by a lady who stated the system was down but she could show me another room but no room had working phones. The next room we accepted out of frustration, it had no working toilet and the safe was broke too! Needless to say they controlled our whole first day with in and out trying to fix this! To top it off the mattress was horrible. The room had 2 twin beds. We stacked the mattresses and still it had a huge sink whole in it!! The room door had huge gaps allowing lots of mosquitoes in! We were eaten alive!! We sealed the door with towels to try to keep them out! Sewer flies came up thru drains and big roaches were seen! Yuck!!! Many travelers had several bites, many questioned bed bugs!! Met a woman in bathroom she was covered from the knees down. Food was very limited. The same food options were offered for breakfast, lunch and supper x 7 days! Flies were a common problem at the buffet. We had to go off the resort to eat. Meal times are problematic as after 2pm, you had to wait until 6:30 to eat again! Entertaining was lacking. No day time activities and the night shows were awful! The coffee bar staff were miserable. The only staff that were helpful and pleasant were the lobby security and the pool bar employees! The rest all need customer service training! We will never return this is a 1 star resort and that star is for the beach as it is beautiful!!! [Details]

An authentic, older resort with character. Spread out over a large area and challenging to find your way around if you are not located in the main area of the resort. The beach was awesome with plenty of chairs for sitting on and the pool was very clean and maintained. The majority of the staff were pleasant and friendly however the people running the coffee hut were dismissive and tended to ignore you if they were talking among each other, which was most of the time. Front desk definitely had attitude and again were dismissive and not helpful. The food was repetitive, bland and unappetizing. Very frustrating way meals were handled as the buffet would not open until a specific time leaving the guests lined up waiting to be let in. The tipping became ridiculous and there was an expectation for tipping continuously. With the exchange rate on the Canadian dollar, if you wanted to do more than sit at the resort, the trip became an expensive one. Check out arrangements were certainly not guest friendly and getting use of a hospitality room a major challenge with staff at reception. Not a place i will visit again. [Details]

Rude and dismissive reception staff and coffee shack. Poor quality and very little entertainment provided.

I have been to Kawama before so know what it is like. This is one of the first resorts in Varadaro age is apparent, But it is worth visiting shows you all the original buildings from then, upgrades have been done, but remember they don't have access to all the amenities we do!! People are great always friendly!!! Food there is always something you can find to eat, remember they have limited access so dont expect it to be fine dining in North America Sun Great People Great, Beach Best in Cuba All the workers are great and treat the tourists like gold. Trip is how you decide to make it, if you expect a five star North American hotel dont come to Cuba. We are there for Sun and Beach all the rest is a bonus. This hotel is close to everything Town/Water / Sun [Details]

The staff was so nice and happy, the beach was so beautiful and had endless amounts of drinks. Met some really nice people and enjoyed the live shows at night. The resort is very close to town so you're able to walk if you'd really like but you can also pay for a bus pass that lasts all day. The flea market was cool along with seeing all the old fashion cars. The food was a bit plain but then again we're use to fast foods and endless spices. There was no wifi the whole so I wasn't able to get ahold of anymore or go on enternet. I kinda didn't mind that though made it so you had to talk to people and didnt have a choice to care what was going on with social media. Go here with an open mind. This isn't a 5 star but it's what you make of it. [Details]

KAWAMA
Kawama

Club Kawama Review
Should have been a family trip
We overheard someone ask about the disco and the response was that it was broken. Based on our walks around the place we aren't really sure where the disco would have been anyway.
Rooms......they are nothing to be excited about, basic amenities and depending on your room (it appeared there were very nice ones in some locations) you could experience the following:
- Twin beds.........very uncomfortable twin beds, the one my other half slept on had a broken spring that actually stuck into him and cause a fairly deep cut.
- Fear of electrical short ...... our bathroom light popped and cracked when it would actually turn on, sometimes it just wouldn't work or sometimes you had to turn on both switches instead of just the one, it was questionable
- Mini Fridge ........ Ours froze everything no matter what temp it was set to, however, on our last day many of these fridges were being replaced so might not be an issue in the near future
- Exchange rate is terrible, however, the bank line ups are worse so be prepared to lose money every time
- Coffee is only served at the lobby bar despite the other bars having coffee machines
- The foam party on Saturday was a little sad. The form wasn't started until after the party and by then there were so many people for this tiny machine that it just piled in one spot in the pool
- Music is lacking as a whole.
[Details]
Not the best stay in Cuba
Do Not Go! Nightmare!!
[Details]
