The strong points
Polite friendly staff, very clean and they made you feel welcome.
The weak points
The beach was horrible due to debris and rocks. Most of the beach is unswimable. The quality of the food was poor. We ate there twice and were disappointed. Every meat dish was overcooked. We ate in town for dinner where the food was much more appitizing.

Good but not great

The hotel was very good but it fell a little short of our expectations for a JW Marriott. The food was OK but generally not great and it was very expensive. I don't mind expensive if it is great but this was just OK. You need to make a reservaton at most of the restaurants in the morning in order to get a table that evening. The pool was clean and warm enough to swim in. There were usually enough lounge chairs and towels were readily available without any rationing. The staff were generally friendly and maintained high seervice levels. The front desk seemed to have a bit of an attitude. The hotels is 20-30 minutes from Tamarindo and the bus is $7 per person, each way. A cab from town is about $30. There is not a lot of need to go to town except to get to other restaurants. Swisstours has a travel desk in the hotel and they run some very well organized excursions. Take some sunscreen because you are probably going to need it and the hotel gift shop only carries only SPF 4 and 80 . You can walk down the beach to the beach club, or take a shuttle. It is very nice there. They rent surf boards there and provide surfing lessons. If you walk 10-15 minutes further South along the beach you will find Lola's, which is a funky little surfers hangout/restaurant. This is a great place to while away a day. You need to know the tide times because it is difficult to get back to the hotel from Lola's or the beach club within two hours of high tide. [Details]
