Antigua stay

, Scarborough, ON
2020-01-17
Travelled there for a week with our son and granddaughter. All four of us gave the stay at the Starfish Halcyon Cove a 8 out of 10. We had a great experience there and would go back again. [Details]

The strong points
The food was excellent, as you could get almost anything. There were vegetarian dishes if you desired. Lots to choose from. The staff was very friendly and helpful. The in-room safe was included in the price and was sufficient to keep our valuable in.
The weak points
The rooms were older and some things didn't work. In-room TV had very poor reception. Our room had a bed in it that had a mattress that was hard as a rock. Couldn't wait to get back in my bed at home.

Family of four and the price was right

, Ajax, ON

I researched by reading a lot of reviews prior to booking. I knew what I was getting into and did not have high expectations for an immaculate resort. The price was excellent, $3650 for our family of 4 (2 adults & 2 kids) made it affordable for us to travel to a dream island. Saving money staying here allowed us to take extra excursions on the island.
The hotel is dated but in transition of upgrades under new ownership. The beach bathroom one day had old tap faucets that were not fully functional and the next day they were changed to new ones and working normal. The room, grounds and hotel are kept very clean. Rooms are dated but I didn't go to Antigua to have a fancy room I went for the beaches. If you required any sort of room service, (ie. towels, toilet plunger) which we did it does take them a long time to respond. I think for the size of the resort they are understaffed or need some better organization.
My family had no issues with the food served and they were very accommodating with my kids who both have life threatening allergies to nuts. You just have to let them know about this when you check in. A kids pre-order menu is provided and prepared by the kitchen. You can either submit your request daily or set it up for the entire stay. Once you arrive in the restaurant you tell the waitress your room number and they notify the kitchen. The meal is not ready at the time requested they prepare on your arrival and the food is hot when served. This is available to be used by all children. The one disappointment that I had is prior to our vacation I tried to be proactive in contacting the resort regarding the food allergy via email. I contacted 3 different email address on their web site and to this day I have had no response. Had their web site had the food accommodation option listed I would not have required to send an email. Since I did not hear back from them I called them long distance directly to the front desk to get my answer. The manager and head chef were very helpful with details.
Lots of food options to choose from which is also good for vegetarians. The a la carte is not extravagant but location is nice.
Bar drink options are many but fancy drinks such a daiquiris are made with ready made sugary mixes. Local beers are good.
We traveled here for the beaches and they do not disappoint. It was worth every penny that we paid to stay here and experience Antigua! [Details]

Don't waste your time or money

, Ottawa, ON

This resort offered nothing to teenagers or adults. The had no volleyballs or any activities that they so called advertised. There are no phones in the room so if there is an emergency you have to physically go to the front desk. The staff are clearly overworked and underpaid and are quite unfriendly. We had a flood in our room and all of our clothes were wet and thankfully we were leaving, but we had to pack damp clothes because the roof of the hotel needed to get redone. The weather and beaches were nice. The food was satisfactory and monotonous. I urge you not to waste your time and money. Consider going to another resort if you want to relax and enjoy your experience. My family wanted to leave after two days and would have left if our airline could have accommodated all of us. This was hands down the worst resort and vacation that I have ever had. I couldn't wait to go home! Everything was overpriced off the resort! Don't waste your time or your money for substandard service! [Details]

Dissapointing

, Toronto, ON
2019-06-27
No nightly entertainment as advertised; Bathroom tub damaged; sink not draining properly; front door hard to open and had to slam shut; after 2 days safe had to be replaced so had to walk about with a bag of our documents and money; Food was not what was expected, when one goes to an island at least some local fruit and food is expected not roast beef and yorkshire pudding or cantelope and honey dew every day. Hey I know this review will be discarded and the standard reply given. Construction with 11 men making a lot of noise outside room. Fell in bathroom because tiles on floor belong on walls not floor, had to flush toilet 3-4 times to get rid of paper, more for other. Will not be back. [Details]

The strong points
Ocean was amazing which was not under your control. Most of the staff was amazing and they were tipped well.
The weak points
This resort really needs a complete overhaul. Too much soliciting on beach. Imagine relaxing or napping and someone almost on top of you asking if you want a drink they made or to buy clothes or jewellry. NOT GOOD!!! I can't recommend but must.
