Westin NS - A port in a storm
Barbara Backland, Nepean, ON

This hotel is dates back to the glory days of rail travel, receiving guests from around the world who arrived or departed by the railroad station directly beside it. Consequently, it offers a quirky charm of the past, updated over the years for the 21st century. We stayed as part of an air/hotel package and upgraded to a King bed with harbour view. The view was limited as the window was rather small. We did get a show each morning of the cruise ships arriving and departing as a result. The room was spacious, had a noisy air conditioner and a deep closet whose light would shut off when the door closed behind me when hanging up my clothing. The bathroom was small with a narrow tub (no grab bar) and updated shower, a sink that took its time draining and old taps that need new caulking. The bathroom had two hooks and no towel racks, so towels were changed daily. The door hook had a nice bathrobe (only one for two people). The bed was comfortable, covered in a warm duvet, the dresser was large enough for both of us. Like most hotels, we could hear the heavy footsteps of whomever was above us, the loud phone talker next door, and doors slamming shut in the corridor at times during the day and night. We stayed four nights, five days. We used the small pool and hot tub twice. The pool deck has limited seating which we shared with only a few others. We didn't use the gym. [Details]

The strong points
Location opposite the Pier, the ample parking, the hotel staff, especially in the bar and restaurant and the FOOD. We loved Max from Ukraine who took such good care of us.
The weak points
We didn't mind the 5 to 10 walk to the shops and restaurants along the waterfront, some may. The awkward parking entrance and the daily parking fee may affect people, however, the car rental in the hotel is helpful!
