Great resort, better staff

, Regina, SK
2024-04-04
We had a fantastic time at the resort. The food was great, the view was lovely, the activities were fun and engaging. The entertainment staff went above and beyond. Christian, Daniel and Melody rocked the water aerobics and made us feel so welcomed at every activity. Megiel, Jose, and Jesus never missed an opportunity to help us stay hydrated by the pool. Even the reception staff was just lovely to deal with. [Details]

The strong points
Staff and pool are highlights here. Along with the food and entertainment.
The weak points
The large showers could have an additional shower head. The beach was smaller then expected.
Sanitary measures
Rooms were cleaned regularly and no staff walked past a problem.

Not very happy

This is not a 5 star, I would maybe rate the hotel as 3.5. The food was good and everything was fairly clean, but, the rooms were about a 2 star. No chairs to sit on, no windows to look out, no coffee machine, iron did not work. I paid good money for this trip and was not very happy. We did have a good time though. [Details]

We loved it
Location is amazing, food and service is incredible, hotel is spotless in all areas
The servers at the pool / restaurants go over and beyond to make you happy . The beach isn't great right in front but to the L it's so nice , westjet representative is awful was not there all week for any information, so be sure to look at your departure pick up online because she's not there and when she is there she acts annoyed you're talking to her . That's not good service
Leave the information out and in a book so we can see it .

We will be back [Details]

A Fantastic Intimate Sized All-Inclusive

, Vanscoy, SK
2024-01-04
My spouse and I have a predilection for all-inclusive resorts, having visited a dozen or so 4-star establishments in the last 10 years, with our spending cap at $3,500 per individual. Our experiences range from exceptional bargains, such as a memorable stay in Riviera Nayarit at $1,900 per person, to our most recent experience at the Alltra Wyndham in Playa Del Carmen.

This resort exemplifies a balance of our most valued aspects — culinary offerings, pools and bars, and relaxation. Notably, its compact layout ensures all facilities are a brief stroll away, negating the need for golf carts or shuttles, the absence of which we found really pleasing.

We look for a resort with a thoughtfully curated, moderately sized buffet that eschews the monotony typically associated with larger setups. Additionally we require a minimum of two good "on resort" restaurants. This resort's culinary delights include Brasas, a grill restaurant; Bella, an Italian bistro; and Off The Hook, a surprisingly capable sushi bar (if a little reliant on cream cheese). Moreover, its proximity to 5th Avenue and area provides effortless access to an array of external gourmet experiences, some of which are an absolute must.

We prefer pools that are active without being chaotic; the water volleyball, foam day, and other assorted activities here were perfect for us. There is only a small handful of pools, but it's clear what each of them is for - the main pool has two sides, bisected by a water bridge and the Agave Bar above the pools. The third pool, situated on the second floor, is almost unusably cool during the winter months, but we eagerly anticipate its enjoyment in our upcoming June visit.

While we don't view beach access as a critical factor, the one here pleasantly surprised us. It's adequately expansive, shielded from excessive waves and seaweed accumulation, offering a serene coastal retreat for handful of times we wanted sand in our toes.

Strategically placed bars enhance the resort's leisure landscape, and the option to reserve cabanas equipped with day beds and curtains is a welcome feature, effectively addressing the common issue of early morning squatters dominating the spaces at other all-inclusive venues.

The exclusivity of Alltra Wyndham as an adult-only establishment significantly contributes to the vacation escape atmosphere. The demographic, including respectful 20-somethings, ensures an uninterrupted relaxation experience. The rooms are contemporarily designed, providing restful nights and rejuvenating sleep.

We are committed to returning to this gem of a resort. Early summer and the following winter are already earmarked in our travel calendar. [Details]

The strong points
The resort is ideally sized with well-conceived pool areas, and a small but charming beach. On-site dining is great with additional nearby options. The ability to reserve cabanas, for the small fee, adds a layer of luxury and convenience.
The weak points
Our solitary complaint is the unheated pools, which seem cool during the winter months. However, this did not significantly detract from our overall enjoyment once we acclimatized to it.

We recently stayed at the Wyndham Alltra PDC for a joint honeymoon with our friends. Our experience was 5 star. This was our first time in PDC and you cannot beat the location of this wonderful resort. Just a block away from the nightlife, shopping and off resort meal options! A convenient distance to Cancun and Tulum for activities.

We were thoroughly impressed with the size, layout and style of our room. We had an Oceanview.

The resort delivered on all levels. We did not have a single bad meal. Our favourite by far was Bella. The coffee bar was a wonderful touch - don't forget to stop by there for ice cream in the afternoons!

The entertainment team did a great job offering daily poolside activities as well as amazing nightly entertainment. All staff were courteous and helpful. We stayed for 10 days and did not want to leave!

Although the beach is smaller than some resorts, it really is perfect! Great privacy, it is quieter than the rest of the public beach. It was clean and a great atmosphere.

Thank you Wyndham Alltra for an unforgettable experience. [Details]

Numerous inconsistencies but no deal-breakers.

, Orleans, ON

My wife and I enjoyed our week-long stay at the Wyndham Alltra Playa del Carmen. We had a nice, large, clean room; the staff was generally quite pleasant and efficient; and we enjoyed the resort's easy-walking proximity to Fifth Avenue, the local Wal-Mart and plenty of shops and restaurants in-between. The resort itself was full of inconsistencies but, thankfully, none of them was a deal-breaker. For example: Service was mostly good but sometimes not; the food was mostly good but sometimes not; and the waiters in the restaurants were mostly familiar with the menus but sometimes not. We were puzzled by the lack of access to drinkable water - a dispenser in the snack area to allow us to refill our own water bottles would have made a LOT of sense - but at least it was available upon request. Overall, we felt we easily got our money's worth. [Details]

Was very enjoyable. From walking through the entrance and meeting Freddy , to the north beach host Angel , and everyone in between, they were very nice .
First night I didn't find the pillows comfortable, I talked with my cleaning lady , she had much more comfortable pillows within 1/2 hour .
Food was good and tasty , a la carte restaurants were nice .
Location is good , sunset location is good . Met people from all over the world .
Pool was difficult to fund a lounge chair after 9 am . Typical no matter where you go .
Architecture is very nice . Size of resort is very nice . Entertainment, for me was middle of the road . No disrespect to any single one of them .
One hiccup wasthe doors slamming from the rooms. Because the corridor runs from the ground floor right up to the skylight, you could hear every door slamming and people talking . As well, every cart that went by .
The rooms had an excellent design to them .
I am planning to come back for Christmas.
I talked with some staff and they told me that they have an incredible turkey spread on Christmas eve. [Details]

We enjoyed many excursions such as Xcaret, and Xenotes, visiting the islands of Isla Mujeres and Cozumel, and exploring the city on foot. We had a great time in a stunning city with a rich culture and friendly locals. The weather was a mix of sunny days and a couple of partial rainy days, which allowed us to see different sides of the place. We thoroughly enjoyed our trip and had some favorite cultural experiences and activities.

The food at the resort was great, and we had a lovely overall experience. The addition the staff was being really nice, fast and friendly. We loved staying there. The rooms were very clean and tended to daily. There are so many activities to do, and the dinners were amazing. Our personal favorite was the Italian restaurant and the Sushi Bar!

However, one issue we encountered was the presence of seaweed and the associated smells. It would be helpful if the resort could address this concern to enhance the overall experience for future guests. While they did use pleasant scents in the lobby to counteract the odor, it was still quite noticeable. [Details]

We booked the hotel because it had a good rating and was in a good location. When we got there we were really disappointed. The smell was awful from rotten seaweed, there was no beach at all, it had eroded away from a storm. The customer care guy told us that they did drop a star in rating because it that, but it didn't show that online or reflected in price . Hot tub was only open 11-5, so that was a disappointment and the jets didn't work. The pizza restaurant closes by 6 which I don't understand,it should be open later than that. The food the first two days that we were there wasn't very good at all, no verity and not much for a vegetarian to eat. We ended up booking at anther resort for 3 days and then came back to finish the last two as we didn't think we could handle the full 7 days there. When we can back there was a lot more ppl at the hotel and the food had improved big which was great. The rooms are nice and big (didn't end up with the view we were told we would get) staff is very friendly and nice. [Details]

Hotel was great - good location right near 5th Ave. Nice pool, good food selection, and a lovely big bright room. Staff were always nice and friendly. Only downside is we didn't realize it was spring break when we booked it so the adults only chill vibe was more of a party hotel. Great if your into that but i wanted to relax! Beach is washed away so limited space, and the pool has a dividing wall under the bridge so you cant actually swim the length of the pool. [Details]

Good stay at Wyndham Alltra

Pro's
-Very good location a block away from the middle of 5th avenue
-Very good entertainment crew for daily activities in the pool
-Nightly entertainment every night is good
-A La Carte were amazing! Definitely do the Italian! We did it twice! Mexican was awesome as well, ask for the peanut butter tequila shot after supper for "dessert" amazing stuff! The sushi and steak house were also very good.
-The main buffet was very good as well and not overly busy which is nice, also had a variety of food.
-Very clean resort and the staff were extra friendly in helping you with booking of excursions, dinners, etc.
-Rooms got cleaned everyday and the facilities were cleaned daily as well
- Have a strict policy on claiming lounge chairs before 8am which i found helpful, could still find chairs even after 8am around the pool, we still rented a cabana for the whole week which you can get a deal on
Cons:
-Need 1 more bar or more bartenders, seemed they were swamped constantly with drinks. At night only the 1 lobby bar was open so it got really busy and took time to get drinks
-Beaches were non-existent, mostly washed away or have excessive seaweed. There is a north beach that you have access too, but it is also used by the public.
-Top pool bar is nice but does not get the sun all day and does not have ocean views

In general I found this resort to be the best one I have stayed at in Mexico to date and would go back for sure [Details]

This was our 8th visit; 6 with the Gran Porto real, 1 with Panama Jack, and now 1 with the Wyndham. We have enjoyed all visits, especially the one we just returned from. The resort continues to provide the best services and excels in creating new experiences in buffet, specialty restaurants, and nightly entertainment. The rooms and grounds are amazing. Just the issue on the last day .
In regards to the environmental fees ..

Don't think it's fear how the employees are able to make up the charges. [Details]

Fantastic Holidays

, Lindell Beach, BC
2023-01-16
This hotel is spotless throughout the property including the rooms which were serviced daily. The food is excellent at all 4 restaurants and most food items are free at the “à la carte” restaurants. This is a small resort for adults only but it can be loud at time especially around the pool and in the hallways late at night, early morning as the partygoers are coming back to their room after partying in Playa Del Carmen. I wouldn't suggest this hotel for someone who wants to have a peace and quiet holiday. The hotel location is prime, minutes away from 5th Avenue. I ended up playing Pickleball 10 mins by car from the hotel at a location called the “poliforum” as there is no Pickleball facility on site. Overall it was a really good holidays and I would rate this hotel as a solid 4.5. [Details]

Overall we had a nice two week holiday. The property is well maintained, very clean, and in a perfect location if being able to walk off resort is a priority.

Check in was fast and painless.

The coffee bar, sushi bar/swim up bar at the upper pool, Mexican Restaurant, and Italian Restaurant were excellent 10/10. Wonderful caring staff that made our stay super enjoyable.

The buffet was very inconsistent. Sometimes no saucers for coffee or missing utensils, sometimes waiting 10 minutes to get your coffee filled and plates taken away, other times it was fast and error free. The food quality was decent but not outstanding. I was unimpressed that unlike other resorts in Mexico I've stayed at; they don't have staff serving the buffet items to reduce the risks of colds/flu/covid spreading. Each and every single guest touching the same serving tongs isn't wise policy especially in cold and flu season. By the time we left it seemed like a lot of guests were sharing the same cold. We limited our buffet trips primarily to breakfast as a result. The serving staff in the buffet room were all very polite and kind.

The beach is a real disappointment. Not for swimmers. There is a great beach bar, and chairs, however zero umbrellas so its not a great place for fair skinned guests who burn easily. Often no towels are stocked here, and you need to walk back to main pool to get any. Other resorts in Mexico are a better choice for beach fans.

The main pool is really nice, and has a great pizza restaurant. However the reserving of chairs is out of control. Between 8-9 am, all chairs are spoken for, and the pool is empty. Staff don't enforce the rules and the guests who try to respect the rules end up not having anywhere to sit poolside. There are no where near enough chairs for the amount of guests. Plus there is a huge amount of space dedicated to up-selling beds pool side. At a non-all inclusive I would understand this, but at an all inclusive it is really poor form. Call it an "almost all inclusive", if I need to shell out more money for a bed poolside because I dared not to leave a towel by the pool at 7:30 am and then leave for breakfast for three hours.

The upper pool was awesome. The nicest staff, however there often weren't towels available. Also the same nonsense of reserving chairs and leaving for hours occurred here.

They had set up a nice air conditioned room to watch World Cup which was very appreciated.

Our room was really nice. Excellent bed, bedding, towels etc. Great maid service, and the bar fridge always was stocked full. The internet was really fast. I only wish that I could have paired netflix and youtube easily on the TV. Our balcony overlooking the ocean and hammock was the best.

Bar service was generally good, but again unlike when we've stayed at other chains, it isn't really "all inclusive" as many spirits had an up charge. Thankfully they had nice ReposadoTequila included in the free spirits. Bars closed too early, (before midnight), but my understanding is this is a new state law.

The hotel's location for walking off resort is perfect. We walked all over PDC. This hotel is perfect for those that like to explore off resort by foot.

I don't know if I would stay at a Wyndham resort again. They get some things perfect, and drop the ball elsewhere. The biggest draw for this hotel for us was its location and staff. However the buffet, pool chair situation, lack of shade at the beach, and up charges for special pool loungers, drinks and food items would likely have us try somewhere else next time. [Details]

The strong points
Most of the front line staff. Especially upper pool bar staff, and the staff in the coffee bar, the Mexican and Italian specialty restaurants.
The weak points
Not a true all inclusive as they have up charges for food/beverage items, and special pool beds Impossible to get a chair by the main pool. Allowing guests to reserve pool chairs all day even though most sat empty. Beach is mostly eroded away.
Sanitary measures
Buffet was poor. Not a lot of hand sanitizer stations compared to other places I've stayed. Otherwise no complaints.

Seaweed

, London, ON
2022-04-17
The resort itself is beautiful but the seaweed that washed up 3 weeks prior to our arrival meant there was nearly no usable beach and a terrible odour throughout the resort (others on a bus dropping us off made sounds and faces in disgust when the bus door opened, my friend was mildly motion sick but vomited after smelling it). The rest of the beach areas we could see all had the seaweed cleaned up so I don't understand why this one didn't.
The food was good but had limited options. Everything closed very early, most of the bars closed by 6pm, everything but one bar was closed at 8pm, and when there was a live DJ party on the Saturday night it was over and cleaned up already by 10.
There was an error with the agent who booked our trip and we were in the wrong room, we did reach out to the agent but also talked to front desk and they didn't seem to care, they moved us on our second last day but we had to push for that. We moved on my friend's bday so I asked if there was anything I could do for her, they said they'd decorate the room but didn't. Lastly, there was a bug in my bed in the first room that I suspect was a bedbug but luckily I didn't find more. [Details]

Clean resort, beach was disappointing

There were a few things different from what we read online and what happened when we got there. There is no 24 hour booze and one of the three restaurants and the Jacuzzi was closed. Then they shut down the beach bar for renos. It was unfortunate we were not informed of the changes or the shut downs beforehand or while we checked in. The beach was pretty much not at all what the pictures showed, it was in reality a very small bit of sandy beach. We weren't given an orientation like others said they did and when asked about the "gift" everyone else received, which was a beach bag, shirt and hat, we were simply not given one. Just felt very unorganized from the staff at times, although they were always friendly. The room was big and clean, and when I cut my leg the staff was quick to help bandage me up. The food was alright, nothing amazing but not horrible either. I think we expected more from the resort being as high a rating as it has but we were disappointed a few times. That being said, it was a great week. The staff were friendly and the pool was clean and nice. The location was the best part of the resort, right in town super close to the shops and bars. [Details]

To start 2 of the 4 restaurants were closed due to renovations. the same food every day next our room was above 1 of those restaurants we were woken up EVERY morning at 4am next we had no to very little hot water and yes we complained they do not care now on to the beach or should I say what beach there isn't one. so that brings me to the pool because you have no beach you have 700 people in a pool that is designed for maybe 300. The only good thing this hotel has going for it is the staff they were great but it stops with the management. Guys out there save your beautiful wifes a heart break take them some where else you will thank me later. [Details]

Terrific Week in Playa

, Waterdown, ON

We have stayed at area mega resorts and explored the attractions and Mayan sites many times so decided to try a place in Playa del Carmen since we always enjoy the sights and shopping there.
Panama Jack's did not disappoint. We ate at the Italian restaurant 3 times, including our final night when chef Mariana prepared a special 4 course dinner for us.She and her kitchen brigade are terrific.
We also enjoyed the Mexican (authentic local, NOT TexMex), and the excellent Sushi Bar at different times. The Buffet was always good at breakfast and lunch (no big lines at the egg/omelette stations) and there is a daily barbecue by the pool. Only downer was the Brazilian where we found the service disorganized. I finished nearly an entire plate of sides before a single bit of meat showed up. Others found the place good, so maybe just a bad day.
At the pool, we found that people would "reserve" chairs early in the morning and not actually use them until afternoon, if at all. This is an area that needs to be addressed. On the upside, Pablo and Jesus were always hustling to make sure everyone had drinks and the entertainment was always lively but not intrusive if you just want to relax.
Overall, a great experience and I would not hesitate to recommend. [Details]

A great place to stay!

My wife and I have been to the Gran Porto Resort a half dozen times and it never fails to meet our needs. It is centrally located in Playa del Carmen, just a 2 minute walk to Fifth Avenue; which is the main area to go for shopping and resturants. The staff at Gran Porto are the best! They will do whatever it takes to make your stay enjoyable. Just ask! We had an Ocean Front room this time. It is very large with a king bed that is quite firm. The bedding is good quality and very clean. There are other catagories including Ocean View, which is on the other side of the building. You can see the ocean to the side of your balcony. Still nice; but be aware many face a street with a lot of bus traffic during the day. The standard rooms are very small compared with other resorts. The food and drinks are fine. The main buffet always has a good choice for every meal. There are 2 a la carte resturants as well. One of them requires a reservation. Also a 24 hour snack bar in the building, and one on the beach serving during the day. The beach is the only disapointment. It has been severely erroded. Much of the shoreline has gone since we were here 2 years ago. There is a row of large sandbags to prevent futher errosion. I was told they now have permission from the government to begin to repair the damage. I hope they succeed.
We enjoyed our stay and hope to be back. [Details]

This place really needs a makeover!! The 'relax' pool was so cold - rarely could swim in it along with the buffet, had to always put a sweater on, really - we go there to try & get away from 'cold'... [Details]

The hotel was good so was the food and the staff, it is located just 2 block from 5th avenue, the beach just sucks it is nearly impossible to swim in the ocean anywhere near the hotel, the normal rooms are small in order to get a decent room you would have to upgrade, the restaurant were very good especially the Mexican which you can go to any night without a reservation, the Italian was ok also but you need to reserve, the buffet was also very good with great selection. You really feel that the staff is trying to make your stay enjoyable. [Details]
