Another relaxing stay
We stayed at the Adults only resort RIU Palace Macao (Nov to Dec 2024). This resort was fully renovated. Our room was located on the 2nd floor, it was nice & clean. We had two beds which we found comfortable. There is a ceiling fan above the bed which we enjoyed. The patio door curtains are opaque. On our balcony, we had 2 chairs a small table & a small drying rack. The balconies have a cement wall (approx. 6.5 feet high) on each side that prevents you from looking or being seen by your neighbours. Our maid service was excellent. We always had our fridge (beers, 475 ml soft drinks & 1.5 L water bottles) & bathroom towels/items... replenished when needed. There is also 4 bottles of different alcohol types (Gin, whiskey, Rum & Vodka) with a measuring dispenser. In the washroom you have a spacious walk-in shower with the option of a rain forest flow or hand held shower head. There are two sinks. In the closet, there are many wood hangers (approx. 22). There is a free digital safe. Wi-Fi is free in your room and on the resort (until the beginning of the beach area), we had no issues. The food was very good at all the locations we ate: Buffet (main building for breakfast, lunch & dinner). The buffet style restaurant has a wide variety of meats, fish, pastas, cold cuts, breads, cheeses, salads, sushi's, fresh fruits/vegetables, jams, Nutella, peanut butter, ice cream, yogurts, many deserts, condiments, syrups, etc...). The food & service at the four À la Carte restaurants (No reservation needed) was very good. The menus at the A la carte restaurants were revised/changed and we welcomed/appreciated the food now offered. For a little extra sweet (deserts), go to the Cappuccino Café. You can obtain many different pastries and different flavoured coffees/Teas. The service at all the bars was excellent. The 3 pools were kept clean. All public washrooms we used were kept clean. For the beautiful large beach area you have plenty of lounge chairs scattered between the many palm trees (no palapas). There are always available lounge chairs. There is an interlock pathway (approx. 150 feet from the ocean) connecting the 4 beachfront RIU hotels (Palace Punta Cana, Bambu, Palace Macao & Palace Bavaro). The location of the Riu Palace Macao is ideal for beach walkers. You can walk either way (East/West) for very long distances. We found the Beach amazing, white sand and nice blueish/green ocean water. For the gym & Spa services there is a new spa/gym building across the main lobby. Everything is very nice & new. The guests were mostly from USA, Canada & Europe. This hotel is quiet, no loud music/noise at night. The average age of the guests is approx. 55 years. The hard working hotel personnel (mostly All the same as before the renovations) are ALL wonderful, friendly & give you an excellent service with a smile from your check-in to your check-out. My spouse and I will definitely return to the RIU Palace Macao resort as we had another very relaxing vacation at this small Adult only resort.

Luxury Ambar
Our first impressions were not good! Our check in was with people on the desk who clearly did not want to be there. You should have people with good English on the desk. It took us talking to several people before we got the right wifi information. Our room only had 2 plugs and we had 2 laptops. We asked 3 or 4 people if we could get a power bar, as I am a travel agent and I was working while on vacation. We were told that they didn't have any. We found a nice young man on one of the desks and he said that we would have one in our room before we got back to our room. And we did. Luxury to me means have the choice of multiple wines, not just red, white and rose. We had a heck of a time trying to get a glass of red wine that was not chilled. Again, customer facing people should be able to speak English. The worst experience was in the Sports Bar where the waitress came to our table and said "What ya want?" Told her we wanted red wine not chilled, she came back with 2 cold glasses of red wine. My husband told her we wanted wine that was not chilled and he even had the translation on his phone. She came back with one glass of wine. We told her that we each wanted a glass not chilled; she picked up my glass put it on her tray and slammed it on the counter. We had put a food order in, but after that initial reaction we left. As for the Main buffet, definitely not luxury. The chairs are all stained, as were the table cloths and food food stains on the wall. Some of the tables and chairs were in rough shape. We had to switch out chairs a couple of times as the chairs were falling apart. On the flip side, there were definitely some very nice staff and the majority of the Specialty Dining restaurants were good. If I have clients wanting to book this property, I would tell them not to expect a "luxury" experience.

Relaxing hotel with all the amenities
We stayed a total of 7 nights in the "adults only" area which is the upscale area of the whole complex, check-in process was expedite and they provided us a private space to get changed as we got there earlier than the check-in time. Inside the hotel there are VIP areas that belong to the "Exclusive Traveler Club", and there are sellers that are constantly trying to sale you the club, be aware of them. The beach is gorgeous; however the amount of lounge chairs is not enough for all the guests, therefore we had to wake up early to "reserve" a pair, otherwise we would have seated far from the beach. The gardens and common areas are beautiful and well maintained, we stayed on the third floor with an overview of the pool and main plaza, a bit far from the beach but was OK. There is a bar nearby the beach and the staff is always available to serve, in general the people working there are super friendly, kind and happy. There are several restaurants with different type of food, from Italian, Peruvian, Steak house, Asian, etc. most of them needs a reservation which can be done through a website, and of course there is a buffet with good options, including a “Dominican” theme night on Friday with typical food, rum and performance, it is highly recommended! There are more facilities in the other side of the complex including shops, restaurants, pool, theatre, etc. We ended a couple of nights in that area as the shows were more entertained as the VIP area is calmer and quieter. Also, there are kayaks available for free, as well as snorkeling and sailboats. The closest town is only 15 min away by walk, cute area with shops, restaurants and bars. In general we had a good week, if only the beach area was less crowded… :)

Excellent Resort
We loved our stay at Dreams Onyx! Great pools, water park, and amazing beach. Friendly and attentive staff. The rooms were fantastic and the swim out room that we got was well worth the money. The food was great (for resort food). There is always something good to eat. We tend to stick to simple foods like pasta as it's cooked in front of us. We also avoid salads, sushi, seafood, etc to try and avoid any chance of getting sick...so far this has worked for us. There are a bunch of a la carte restaurants and all were great. Our favorite was the steak at the French restaurant. Delicious! The room had a dry drain smell in the bathroom. We told them an guy was at our door within 20 min to flush the drains and that took care of it. Our only complaint is that they use very strong fragrances. The room cleaner is very strong, we had to ask that they not use it (which they did and it was never an issue again). The main lobby and both preferred lounges were pumped extremely strong fragrances. Visualize a perfume department in a store then multiply by 10. My wife has a fragrance sensitivity and couldn't go into any of those rooms. I was fine in them but I also found that the smell was overwhelming and didn't like spending any more time in the rooms than necessary. I only mention this so someone else with a fragrance sensitivity is prepared for this. Let me be clear, this is only an issue in 3 rooms and we will definitely go back. It's not a deal breaker. Just hold your breath and scoot through the lobby if you don't like strong smells.

Terrible Service; Rooms Need the Renovation
The hotel advertised itself as a luxury 5-star resort that was newly renovated. We booked the best possible room with a swim-out pool, which proved to be a poor choice due to heavy trolley traffic and noisy parties between 1-3 AM as guests returned to their respective resorts on the grounds. I suspect the renovations were on the pools and common areas, not the rooms. Our room, 93017, was unbearably humid with constantly damp bed sheets and slippery floors, despite running the AC at full blast. This created an uncomfortably cold environment without effectively reducing humidity. Wood baseboards showed visible swelling, and bathroom ceilings had mold. The humidity made floors treacherous, forcing us to waste towels keeping them dry. The sugar was clumped and you had to tear the packet in half for it to come out for reference, i had post a photo of my blue shirt being left on the bed for about 30 min, showing the dampness that was transferred. Our party of three (myself, my 92-year-old father, and 13-year-old daughter) were all charged adult rates. The third bed, a pull-out couch, smelled of WD40, and complaints went unaddressed. Extra blankets were unavailable, and the third bed lacked proper bedding and pillows. The language barrier proved challenging as staff would say "yes" to requests but take no action. The restaurants are generally good but could benefit from more authentic representation of their respective cuisines. The buffets are nice, and most staff are attentive, though some lack basic service skills, such as proper cutlery handling and placement (specifically server Cheila). Wheelchair accessibility is problematic, with 90-degree ramps making navigation difficult. Restaurants like Yurta, Tainos, and Naan require navigating awkward ramps with sharp turns. At Yurta, guests must manage heavy curtains without staff assistance. The hotel's wheelchair is poorly maintained - bring your own. Many steps are inadequately marked, and resort trolleys lack steps, requiring lifting mobility-impaired individuals. Room service is inconsistent, delivering roughly 75% of orders eventually (example: my father's omelet was missed twice before they claimed they couldn't make it; coffee arrived 30 minutes later, cream 30 minutes after that). The Sports Bar is good but needs more vegetarian/salad options. Popular items like mozzarella sticks and draft beer frequently run out. Beach bar staff tend to ignore guests until explicitly approached. CAICU's day manager Erados is exceptional - managing staff well and helping with translation. The paella cook is also noteworthy for her motherly demeanor. At BP-Punta Cana's Japanese restaurant, staff seemed lost and inappropriately suggested stairs for wheelchair access. Front desk experiences varied: Miguel provides excellent service, while Bernardette is dismissive and rude. She responded poorly to queries about pre-arrival email communications. Our bellhop Dennis was excellent. Note that arrivals at Bahia Principe Punta Cana require an internal trolley transfer to Esmeralda (or other resort sections like Ember or Fantasia) - information not communicated beforehand. Mid-November weather was subpar, and climate control throughout the resort was inadequate. Indoor restaurants were too cold, and temperature variations between areas were challenging for elderly guests. The Spa offers good services but lacks customization. My father's massage experiences were disappointing - first too soft for pain relief, then a basic athletic massage. The double room's broken thermostat left him cold throughout. However, my daughter enjoyed her facial treatment. Beware of constant haggling from sales people and double check any excursion you take, the photos and the actual excursion are worlds apart. Prepare with any medical essentials; the store on the resort is pricy - pack of mints was $8 USD while cough medicine was $12 USD. The renovation, I believe, took place in the pool from what i heard guests say. The staff, are really need training by senior and experienced individuals from the industry.

Very clean resort and very children friendly
We went as an extended family with our 3 adult children and their spouses and our 3 grandsons who were 3months, 6months and 18 months in age. We all thought the resort was excellent. There is a BRAND new play ground for children, not a scratch on it, with brand new astro turf underneath. There is a FANTASTIC lazy river and it has a 9 hole mini golf course around it; that they were putting new astro turf on when we arrived. We had a bit of difficulty getting a kettle which they needed to sterilize baby bottles but eventually they got it. We were in diamond so we had our butler make the dinner reservations for our group of 8 adults and 1 high chair—the 2 babies we took turns holding during dinner. We went to 1) Oceanside-our least favourite service was slow and meal seemed like it had sat a bit. 2) Grazie Italian the second night—service was Fantastic there, but the food was not the greatest—don't order the Lasagna unless you think you want meatloaf. My daughter's choice of chicken parm was a bit better. 3)Hunter steak house was THE BEST—great rib eye cooked medium like we like it—so pink and service was very good. 4) Tapenaki experience was fun and the meal was okay—the beef and chicken were overcooked and a bit tough but its more about the show than the meal there. 5) Brazilian restaurant was VERY Good —we were all nervous about this one as we had a bad experience with it in Mexico at another resort. 6). last night we did Japenese à la carte in the Tapenaki restaurant—service was very slow for this but the food was excellent and the sushi arrived at the end of the meal; which was a bit weird. We were happy that we had diamond club as then we had a Butler to book the restaurants as we needed to eat at 6pm so the 18 month old wouldn't fall asleep at the table on us without eating. Without the Butler I doubt we could have obtained 6pm for our group each night. The Buffet in the morning was excellent we typically were there from 7 am with our grandsons however I noticed there could be quite a long line up to get in if you didn't show up till 9am. I really enjoyed the coffee shop—open 7am -11pm each day and the cappuccinos were great and their ice cream too. We tended to sit near the lazy river during the day under a big covered canopy as the babies don't tolerate the sun —the servers came by and brought us our drinks and were all very friendly. For lunch I really enjoyed the Ocean restaurant as long as you got there right at 12:30 it was a magnificent buffet with french grilled fish and calamari. Other than using the Butler to book our restaurants we didn't use the Diamond club stuff as the rest of our group just were regular. None of the pools are heated but I like that as then you can cool off and the babies got used to it. We bought blow up floating pool things on amazon before we left so the grandsons each had one for the lazy river or pool. Most people seemed to bring flotation devices with them. I would go again, it is a very clean resort. The staff were friendly and not looking for tips at all. All the staff picked up whenever they saw something so the place was kept exceptionally clean for the volume of people that were there. There were alot of small children and extended family groups. I liked our room —we were in the Chairman's building and the rainwater shower heads and hand held shower head were great. Very big room and well appointed.

Amazing resort
Just wow. There was not a lot to complain about there. Our room was not ready on time but once we got it everything was perfect. Air conditionning was good, no bad smells, plenty of hot water, good water pressure, comfortable mattress, plenty of pillows. We did not ear the fridge's compressor nor the neighbours. There are water stations to fill out water bottles near every room so no more running/asking around for water. Food at the buffet was varied and really good. I found something new to try every day and I ate as well as a 5 stars hotel in Mexico. A la carte was easy to book and very good too. There was plenty of chairs and palapas around the beach and the pools. There's still those crazy people that wakes up at 7 or earlier to go put their towels on chairs but we always found a good spot by just taking our time to do our stuff in the morning and arrive at the beach around 10:30. There was seaweed like every other resort but it's well taken car of by the crews. The beach is very long (about 5 km) and is good for walks. It seemed that along that beach, our resort had the most seaweed in the shallow area but it was still relatively easy to find a spot to swim in. I had brought my fins and snorkeling gear but it's pretty useless. There was nothing to see around and visibility was at most 1 to 2 feet. If you want to see marine life you better book an excursion to the reefs. It was easy to get drinks from the different bars, they were not cheap on the alcohol and drinks were tasting really good. Site was generally very clean. Wifi was good throughout the resort. I would definitely return there anytime. For people that it concerns, it seemed adapted for people in wheelchairs.

Good for families
I stayed at the Fantasia with my family. (I was a single traveler who met my parents and brother and his family). The resort was good considering we were traveling with small children, but I would not return unless I was with children. The resort was generally nice and taken care of but was outdated and rundown in some places. My parents' room and my room each separately had a leak in our ceilings. I went to the front desk to ask for maintenance and then called again hours later when it still wasn't fixed. The cleaning staff came and saw the trash can filling with water and called (in Spanish) to ask for help. Only then did they show up to fix it. My back, sliding door was broken but I didn't bother asking for Maintenance because I knew it would fall on deaf ears. The entertainment was average. Not better or worse than I have experienced at other resorts. Drinks were delicious and strong. One bartender was rude and purposely overlooked me. Eventually I learned that if I had my tip showing in my hand when I waited, I was given quicker service. The food wasn't superb, but not bad enough that I wouldn't return because of it. The biggest problem I found, which is not a problem exclusive to this resort, is the language barrier. A very very large majority of the guests were Spanish speaking so the staff and especially entertainment crew didn't even bother trying to speak English. Games by the pool were completely in Spanish. Lastly, I arrived at night, 30 minutes before the buffet was closing so the front desk told me to leave my suitcase with the bellboys and go to eat. When I opened my suitcase, I found jewellery (some bracelets, a necklace, a jewellery bag and a lip gloss) that didn't belong to me. I returned the items to the front desk but was bothered that no one was watching my bag and things could have been stolen. Good, almost great, but not excellent. I have had better experiences at other resorts.
